Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books. We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity. The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride. Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,
overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York. After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen. After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must
believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life. I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure. I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son. Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership. I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

Members of the Islip Chamber of Commerce and elected leaders gathered in front of Tellers Chophouse on Tuesday to celebrate the $2,500.00 that was raised to keep the flags flying on Main Street. “The Islip Chamber had lost their partnership with a group that had previously replaced and installed our flags,” said the chamber’s president Doris Kennedy. The problem was addressed during a casual chamber meeting earlier this year, when chief operating officer John McMurray of Good Samaritan Hospital stepped up to the plate.
As a retired Colonel of the U.S. Military, McMurray knew the presence of the American flag was a central part of any Main Street. “It just so happened that I grew up in Islip. And when the chamber mentioned that they needed help, I thought it was a great opportunity to be able to support them,” said McMurray. He offered to replace the old flags and have new ones installed. Good Samaritan Hospital has become the chamber’s new chief sponsor, investing $2,500.00 into the Islip hamlet. Kennedy says they are
extremely grateful. “Forty flagpoles and hardware were purchased through Lennon Flags, a local flag company, and they were installed by Rainbow Party Rentals of Bay Shore in mid-May,” said Kennedy. They now hang on several posts all throughout Islip’s Main Street. “The flags are a good way to remind everyone of the soldiers — of our past, our present, and often our future — that serve the country in which we live,” McMurray said Tuesday in Islip. “Freedom is not free.”

Vanderbilt’s Storied “Alva” Yacht Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York. The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport
museum. Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call. On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship
was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57). The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the
USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat. net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.) On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia. Assigned to the Inshore Patrol Squadron in the 5th Naval District, she made several
convoy escort voyages between New York, Key West, and Guantanamo, Cuba, during 1942-43. On the evening of August 5, 1943, the Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia. The ship’s sonar gear alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity. Moments later, the

William K. Vanderbilt II (1878-1944) spent years dreaming of and designing his 264-foot yacht Alva. The ship, named after his mother, Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, was custombuilt at the KruppGermaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany. On August 5th, the Vanderbilt Museum marked the 75th anniversary of the yacht’s wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943.

Ormsby M. Mitchel, Jr., was thrown violently against a bulkhead by the explosion. He sustained serious injuries, which later required amputation of his left leg. Despite his own condition, he directed abandon-ship operations and remained at his post until the ship went down. Mitchel was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.

Dr. Christopher Smalley was recently named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at the Islip School District, replacing Dr. Ellen Semel, the district’s current superintendent of schools. Since 2013, Dr. Smalley had served as principal at Islip’s Wing Elementary School. He previously SUPPORTING GIRL SCOUTS - Legislator Tom Cilmi poses with East Islip Girl worked as an assistant principal at Signal Hill Scouts, Ashley Flyntz and Morgan Lanberg. Half Hollow Hills School District from 2007 to 2013, as a third- and fifth-grade teacher at Forest Park Elementary School in the Half Hollow Hills School District from 2004 to 2007, and as a fifth-grade teacher at New York City schools from 2001 to 2004. Dr. Smalley earned his bachelor’s degree in cinema from Binghamton University, his master’s degree in elementary education from LIU Post, his graduate program in educational leadership from Stony Brook University and his doctorate in education from Dowling College. The busy educator also serves as a Binghamton University undergraduate admissions ambassador and is the author of the book “The Energy of Friends and Bullies,” published in December
2017. He currently resides in Kings Park with his wife and three children. “Over the past five years, I have really gotten to know the students, families and staff here in Islip,” said Dr. Smalley. “We share the common understanding that all students need to be safe, healthy, engaged, supported and challenged. Our students also need to be prepared to think both critically and creatively, evaluate massive amounts of information, solve complex problems, and communicate well.
