The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students
Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. Newspapers improve reading skills. Like the old adage says, “Practice makes perfect.” Reading newspapers each day can help kids develop their reading and comprehension skills.
3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. Each days, newspapers include local,
national and international stories that can illustrate to kids that there’s a world beyond their own. 6. Newspapers promote social consciousness. Without newspapers, young people may never be exposed to the social issues facing their own communities or those issues that are affecting people across the country and the world. Newspapers provide unbiased exposure to such issues, potentially leading youngsters to further explore topics that are shaping their world and even encouraging them to form their own opinions. 7. Newspapers make learning fun. According to a 2017 report from Common Sense Media, kids younger than eight spend an average of two hours and 19 minutes per day looking at screens. Newspapers provide a welcome break from tablets, smartphones and computers, and kids may have fun flipping pages and getting a little ink on their hands. Newspapers remain invaluable resources that can benefit students in myriad ways.
Elected To New York State Honorary Office
It is not very often that the American Legion Auxiliary Junior members are elected to a New York State Honorary office, but this year 2019-2020, Suffolk County had 2 members elected for office. Suffolk County Past 10th District Chairman and current Junior Chairman Erin Horn escorted 9 American Legion Auxiliary Juniors to Albany recently. Their mission was to attend, a New York State wide meeting of other Junior members and to help others. The forty girls that attended were from ages 8-17 years old. They planned and executed several volunteer activities to help veterans
and their families during the conference. The girls brought boxes and bags full of items to donate to Guardian House, a local women’s veterans shelter in the area. Some of the items included clothing, gift cards, toiletries, assorted greeting cards, linens, pocket books and so much more that were sorted and packed for delivery. The girls painted 200 large stones that had messages or art work on them that they shared with Seniors. Many took some home to leave in local areas like parks for others to find. The girls spent several days together, painting pinky’s blue for the Dept presidents
project, selling assorted candy to also use for other projects. In addition to the volunteer work, the girls held election of officers. Among those elected were two Suffolk County Junior members. Emily Sensabaugh, a senior in East Islip School District, represented Babylon American Legion Auxiliary and was elected as New York State Honorary Historian. Emily Albert, attends Sachem Schools and represented RusyBohm American Legion Auxiliary in Islip. She was elected as New York State Honorary Secretary. Congratulation to both girls.

housands of people were directly affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Millions more were glued to their televisions as they watched the news coverage of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania.

The former World Trade Center site was decimated by the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were part of the New York skyline for more than 40 years. The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.
Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood.
According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

have dispensed 1,980 kits since they began in 2016, bringing the total to15,048. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Tomarken said, “The CDC recently reported that only one naloxone prescription is dispensed for every 70 high-dose opioid prescriptions, which leaves vulnerable many individuals to overdose. We encourage healthcare practitioners who prescribe opioids to their patients to also prescribe naloxone. At the same time, we encourage residents to come to one of our opioidoverdose-prevention classes to get trained so they will know what to do and feel comfortable dispensing naloxone should they have the opportunity to use it.” The Suffolk County Opioid Prevention Program

Warning Against Phone Scams

Suffolk County Sheriff Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr. would like to alert all Suffolk County residents to a phone scam currently being received by many seniors in the county. The scammer calls as a representative from the Sheriff’s Office and states that a warrant is an active arrest warrant. The scammer also states that this warrant can
be resolved by making a payment over the phone using popular gift cards. The Sheriff would like to remind all residents that neither the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, nor any government entity, will call you on the phone requesting payment over the phone. Any request for payment for any outstanding debt should be in writing and payment
will never be requested in gift cards. For more information on this type of phone scam, or if you fallen victim to this scam, visit the FTC Consumer Information Website at https://www. consumer.ftc.gov/articles/ paying-scammers-giftcards or report the scam at 1-877-FTC-HELP.
WILKINSON KING BECOMES LATEST GRADUATE - In a happy Aug. 28 ceremony in the East Islip High School library, Kayann Wilkinson King became the latest graduate of the Class of 2019. Clad in red robe and caps and accompanied by Principal Mark Bernard, she entered to the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” and cheers from her proud family as well as central administration and Board of Education President William Carpluk. Belz Named Assistant Superintendent The East Islip School District named Dr. Lisa Belz as the assistant superintendent for human resources and administration, a new position. Now in her 16th year in East Islip, Dr. Belz most recently served as the executive director of special education/pupil personnel services 6-12. She previously worked as the district’s director of special education, principal of Connetquot Elementary School and Timber Point BUCKY THE BUCCANEER - Islip High School Principal Jon LaRochester, Athletic Elementary School, and Director John Sparacio and the school’s Bucky the Buccaneer mascot greeted incoming elementary principal of the early childhood center. freshman at orientation on Aug. 29.
