Against Domestic Violence is pleased to announce that our Executive Director, Colleen Merlo is being recognized by Long Island Business News for Non-profit Leadership Excellence during the Corporate Citizenship Award Program. When discussing her secret to leadership success; Ms. Merlo acknowledged the work of her staff, volunteers and the Board. She stated, “Leadership is about inspiring and motivating people to work together towards a goal. Leading an organization with a mission to save lives makes it really easy to keep staff motivated.” The award comes at a critical time when COVID has had a direct impact on survivors who were facing increased isolation and increased threats to their physical safety and emotional well-being. Ms. Merlo explained that the necessary isolation orders that were issued “provided abusers another opportunity to exert power and control over their victims”. She went on to encourage survivors to reach out for help during these challenging times;

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.

The Value Of Mulched Leaves Homeowners who don’t look forward to dusting off their rakes each fall might be happy to learn that mulching fallen leaves with a mower may be a healthier and less labor intensive way to confront a yard covered in leaves. For 20 years, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University studied how lawns reacted to having ground up leaves left on the lawn and the results were overwhelmingly

positive. Researchers found that tiny pieces of mulched leaves eventually sifted down through the turf and provided the lawn with essential nutrients. Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, researchers found that

mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternating using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens.

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crashlanded. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks,

is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.

The Islip School District has named Brian Kroll as the new director of fine and performing arts. Kroll replaces the interim director, Dr. Jeff Dailey. Kroll comes to Islip from the Babylon School District, where he had worked since 2000 as Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s director of the junior and senior choir, extracurricular women’s choir, vocal jazz ensemble and chorale, as well as musical director of the allschool musical production and coach of the varsity golf team. In an effort to support fellow health care workers battling coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), 30 Northwell Health

nurses answered the call to deploy to Utah to support Intermountain Healthcare. Speaking via Zoom, three intensive care unit (ICU)

nurses -- representing Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park and

Southside Hospital in Bay Shore – were in unanimous agreement that pitching in to assist their colleagues in support of both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients was the right thing to do. Andrew Roberts, the project manager for emergency deployment at Northwell, said the 30 deployed agreed to work at Intermountain Medical Center over a sixweek period – in groups of 10 over two-week deployments. “Last April, when we were in the epicenter of the COVID outbreak, Intermountain deployed two COVID-19 response teams of 100 staff members to assist New York hospitals,” Mr. Roberts said. “Clearly, now that the surge has subsided in New York, it’s our time to return the favor. These 30 people left their homes, their families, and their friends. As ICU nurses, they all possess a very specialized set of skills.
