Fire Island Lighthouse Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the

Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Learn how lighthouse Keepers in the 1860’s to 2017 maintained the light. This event includes a tour

SCOPE Summer Fun The Islip School District’s SCOPE Islip Summer Explorations program, hosted at the high school this summer, offered students entering first through fifth grades an opportunity to participate in a variety of classes from sports and nature, to cooking, clay making and technology. Organized by business teacher Joe Modica, who serves as the program’s dean, Summer

Explorations was facilitated by Sherwood Elementary School nurse Ann Maria Ferry. Robin Ahlers and Karen Volkman, both teachers at Islip High School, helped to ensure a fun-filled summer with their respective courses, “LEGO Builder’s Club,” which encouraged students to use their imaginations to build structures and characters following a daily theme, and “Let’s Get Cooking,” where students

made various meals such as tacos, smoothies and chocolate chip cookie lasagna. Other program instructors included Islip Middle School teachers Sue Davis, Laura Greco and Jessica Wilkow. “No matter what class the students were involved in, they are sure to have had an exciting and educational summer,” said Modica.

Legacy of Literacy Before her graduation, recent Islip High School alumna Ashley Goveia spent developed the Early Childhood Literacy Program with two of the district’s elementary schools, Commack Road and Wing, to help inspire children of the Islip community to read. Goveia was invited to be a speaker at the Sayville Rotary Club’s annual Literacy Celebration and the Rotary District 7255 leadership meeting, and was presented with the Rotary Literacy Leadership Award for 2015 and 2016 for this project. Goveia’s interest in literacy began when she was 3 or 4 years old. “I heard on TV that there were young children who were homeless and I wanted to make them feel better by giving them my favorite books,” she said. “I collected all of my books in a blanket and dragged

them to the door, to give what I thought were the only six homeless children in the world something special. I repeatedly asked my mom when were we giving my books to the kids, until we figured out a way to do it.” They started the Legacy of Literacy program 13 years ago through local Rotary Clubs, proving thousands of free books to hundreds of children. As Goveia grew older, she continued working on these events, but also wanted to do her own projects, which led to the Islip program. “I chose to develop the Early Childhood Literacy Program because I can relate to children struggling to read, as it was my most difficult area of study, and it has been my inspiration to give to others since I was small. I wanted to inspire small children to love to read and

become lost in a good story, and I especially wanted to give them something to love that they could have their entire lives.” The process began with Goveia meeting with the elementary principals to introduce the project and to try to develop specific events tailored to their school. The events provided fellow high school students who participated with community service credit. Goveia also chose younger Interact Club members to shadow her so that the club can keep the project going after her graduation. “Literacy and community service is something I have dedicated myself to for nearly my entire life,” she said. “I know I will continue serving my community throughout my life and I hope in some small way, to inspire others to do the same.”

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that Suffolk County has joined with the American Red Cross of Long Island to create an online donation platform for all residents to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. All donations will go directly to support emergency response efforts as well as for those still grappling with the devastation and ﬂooding. “Long Islanders know all too well how Superstorm Sandy affected us all, and we will do whatever it takes to help our friends in Texas and Louisiana during this difficult time,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I thank the American Red Cross of Long Island for their partnership and commitment to help those in need.” Neela Lockel, CEO of the American Red Cross of Long Island, said, “Our hearts go out to the

hundreds of thousands of people affected by what is being called the worst ﬂooding disaster in U.S. history. The American Red Cross is working day and night to get help to where it is needed most. Thank you to our dedicated partners in Suffolk County for supporting these efforts.” The donation page is operated through the American Red Cross and accepts donations in all denominations. All funds donated will go to provide emergency assistance such as food, water, diapers, clothing and more. Hurricane Harvey has already set an all-time record for rainfall in the lower 48 states and additional rain is expected in the coming days. Since the storm hit late last week, 50 counties in the affected region have ﬂooded, leaving more than 30,000 people displaced in emergency shelters. As of Monday, as many as 13

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk recently welcomed Jeff Kuhr as a general board member. Jeff has worked for Home Depot for more than 10 years, and for the last five

years he has been a district service manager overseeing Central Long Island with the responsibility of the installation services for that territory. His role includes supervising the

partnerships with the stores, the customers and the installation providers for all of Home Services. Prior to that, he served as a store manager of a highvolume Home Depot store. In addition, he has been a “Team Captain” for the NY Metro Region for all Volunteer Service’s Team Builds related to work with veterans, schools and other community outreach programs. Currently, he is on the Suffolk Workforce Development Board and their Standing Committee for Adults with Special Needs. Jeff is also a licensed contractor, mold inspector, home inspector, realtor and home energy auditor. Jeff is married for 10 years and is the father of four children. The family lives in Dix Hills. Softball Champions The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct Softball Team won its first championship in the Town of Huntington Fire Department league on Tuesday, August 22nd. The team, led by pitcher Chris Rathje, swept the Commack Fire Department team in a best of three series. Commack was the defending champions and was shell-shocked by the 2nd precinct squad which scored over 40 runs during the two-game sweep. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has played for the 2nd Precinct’s softball team for the last three years. “This team is comprised of

a great group of guys who work hard and constantly pick each other up, which is the definition of a true team,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Throughout the past 20 years of playing softball, I have never played alongside such a dedicated group. I am so honored to be part of this team and this championship.” Approaching the playoffs, the 2nd Precinct Softball Team finished in first place with a record of 21-7. Their dominance continued throughout the competitions, by never losing and never trailing in a game except for the 1st inning of the 2nd finals game.

Chris Rathje the 2nd Precinct’s veteran pitcher returned for the finals after suffering a leg injury in the final double header of the regular season. Rathje had great command of his pitches throughout the night, limiting walks to four intentional walks to Commack’s best hitter. He also had impressive at bats with seven hits in two games, driving in four runs and scoring five times., “I felt good on the mound and confident in our defense behind me,” said Chris Rathjie. “This was a real team effort with everyone contributing towards our victory.”

Disaster Relief Fund In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, Catholic Health Services (CHS) announced today that the system’s Caregivers Fund made a $100,000 contribution toward a special collection organized by the Diocese of Rockville Centre to assist those affected by the brutal storm. “This donation is a visible demonstration of our mission and values, made possible by ongoing financial support of our employees to our Caregivers Fund,” said CHS President and CEO Alan D. Guerci, MD. “This

is just one more way CHS employees make a difference in the lives of others.” In 2007, CHS employees initiated the CHS Caregivers Fund to assist fellow caregivers at home and abroad. To date, more than $1,000,000 has been raised to support the work of medical providers coping with difficult conditions. Donations have helped to purchase equipment such as patient lifts and portable dental units, to provide medical supplies and other necessities to homebound patients, to train nurses and to care for the medically underserved. CHS donates

all administrative costs, ensuring recipients receive 100% of contributions. To contribute to the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Hurricane Harvey Fund, please contact a local parish or donations can be sent to the Finance Office, Diocese of Rockville Centre, P.O. Breast Cancer Support Groups The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers new on-going support groups on a weekly and monthly basis. Weekly Groups General Support Group Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer will have the opportunity to meet with others in similar situations. Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Taking care of person

with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend. Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs. This support group will focus on hose concerns while allowing the members to share their

feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend. Support Group for Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 Breast Cancer Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. Meet with other women who are diagnosed with Stage 4/Metastatic Breast Cancer. Monthly Group Touchstone Group Last Monday of the Month 6-7:30 p.m. Women who received

their last treatment more than 18 months ago will meet to check in with each other’s progress and discuss new developments in the world of breast cancer. This group is for women who are not in active treatment but want to stay in touch with other survivors. Cafecito: Support Group for Spanish Speaking Women with Breast Cancer Thursdays, September 7th and 21st; October 5th and 26th; November 9th and 30th Meetings are held at
