The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values

and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, NY. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs

must be on leashes and all cats and ferrets must be in carriers. Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection.

New York State and Suffolk County laws require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. Although no raccoons have tested positive for the rabies virus in Suffolk

Healthy Back to School Lunches It’s almost time for back-to-school! Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budgetfriendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kidfriendly. · Use different breads like

100% whole-wheat tortilla wraps (choose wraps low in saturated fat and made with no hydrogenated oils) or 100% whole-wheat pita pockets. ·In addition to lettuce and tomato, try shredded carrot or zucchini and sliced cucumbers, peppers, or apple or pear with a turkey sandwich. ·Try avocado or hummus as a swap for cheese or mayo. ·Try a leftover grilled chicken in your sandwich as a healthy swap for lunch meat. Love those Leftovers Think about using the leftovers from a family favorite dinner for a next day lunch. Use a thermos to keep foods hot or cold until the lunch bell rings. The prepared/packaged versions of these foods sometimes have a lot of sodium, so make them homemade with little or no salt, or compare nutrition facts of similar products and choose the ones with less sodium. ·Soup - tomato, vegetable or bean ·Chili (vegetarian or made with lean or extra lean ground chicken) ·Spaghetti or curly pasta salad (whole wheat with veggies and chicken added) ·Bean casserole or beans & rice with vegetables. Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their

food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples. · Carrot, celery and sweet pepper strips to dip into hummus, fresh salsa or homemade bean dip. ·Whole-grain, lowsodium, low-fat crackers* or slices of grilled tofu (a soybean product) to dunk into soup. Avoid packing sugary drinks like “power” drinks, soda, or sugar-added juices to your kids’ lunchboxes, or home meals. Water or school purchased milk are great options to reduce sugar in the diet. Let the crunchy snacks be fruit or cut veggies, not fried, fatty chips. Get Them Involved When kids help pack their lunches, they’re more likely to eat that lunch! On nights you have a bit more time, like a Sunday night, have them choose which piece of fruit or what type of whole grain bread they want and let them assemble their lunch. Overdose Prevention Classes

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the County has scheduled an Opioid Overdose Prevention Class during the month of September. The training, which meets New York State Department of Health requirements, will enable participants to recognize an opioid overdose, administer intranasal naloxone, better known as Narcan™, and take additional time-dependent steps while Emergency Medical Service teams are in transit. Participants will receive a certificate of completion and an emergency resuscitation kit that includes the intranasal Narcan™ “My administration is committed to providing more resources, more education and more training to fight back against the scourge of the opioid epidemic,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “These training classes, which provide everyday citizens with the power to save lives, have proven to be a force multiplier, augmenting our robust public safety system, and they are an integral part of our multifaceted approach to dealing with the opioid epidemic.” Since the inception of Suffolk County’s Opioid Overdose Prevention Program in 2013, Suffolk County Department of Health has trained 13,068 non-traditional responders, each of whom received a Narcan™ kit. In addition, local hospitals, which offer opioid overdose prevention training and Narcan™ kits under Suffolk County’s license with New York State, have dispensed 1,980 kits since they began in 2016, bringing the total to15,048. Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Tomarken said, “The CDC recently reported that only one naloxone prescription is dispensed

for every 70 high-dose opioid prescriptions, which leaves vulnerable many individuals to overdose. We encourage health-care practitioners who prescribe opioids to their patients to also prescribe naloxone. At the same time, we encourage residents to come to one of our opioid-overdoseprevention classes to get trained so they will know what to do and feel comfortable dispensing naloxone should they have the opportunity to use it.” The Suffolk County Opioid Prevention Program classes will take places as follows below. Learning How To Pitch Tents Scott Bronson, the manager for Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Office of Educational Programs, paid another visit to Islip Middle School students in the EXCEL program as part of the ongoing “Inventing Self” series of inspirational guest lectures. Bronson discussed wilderness survival with the students,

including hands-on instruction in pitching a tent and staying warm in adverse conditions. The Battelle Memorial Institute named Bronson as Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Inventor of the Year in 2006 for his work in developing educational laboratory science kits. Prior to joining BNL, Bronson

served as education coordinator for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Dolan DNA Learning Center and appeared on “The Gene Hunters” episode of PBS show “Scientific American Frontiers” and California Newsreel’s “Race: The Power of an Illusion” documentary.

East Islip High School students in Lauren Ferlin’s AP environmental science class recently visited Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley, one of 10 national wildlife refuges on Long Island. During the field trip, the students took a guided hike where they observed

wildlife including several species of turtles, hawks, muskrats, snakes, birds and insects. After the tour, students went kayaking down Carmans River, where they explored the estuary environment. While on the river, students observe many other animals including snapping turtles,

fish, crabs, shrimp, barn swallows, egrets, ospreys and herons. “For many of my students, this was their first time in a kayak,” Ferlin said. “It was most definitely a memorable experience.”

Heroic Police Officer Recognized Legislators Sam Gonzalez (D-Brentwood) and Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) presented a proclamation to Suffolk County Police Officer Kevin Bell of the 3rd Precinct in recognition of his heroism in the line of duty. On June 25, 2019, Officer Bell was dispatched to an emergency call for an adult male who had been hit by a machine inside a warehouse in Brentwood. When he arrived on the scene, Officer Bell found the victim laying on the floor with an injury to his

upper leg and suffering from a significant amount of blood loss. Officer Bell retrieved his departmentissued tourniquet and applied it to the upper portion of the victim’s right thigh. Due to Officer Bell’s rapid response, recognition of the victim’s injury and the immediate and appropriate medical attention, the victim is expected to make a full recovery. “Officer Bell’s immediate action demonstrates that he is well trained and possesses the confidence to act decisively in an

Roofing Solutions To Environmental Concerns (NAPSI)—More and more Americans are calling the nation’s cities home. According to 2010 Census data, an estimated 80.7 percent of Americans now live in urban areas— up from 79 percent in 2000. Not only does this urban population increasingly tax the country’s infrastructure, but it is also having an effect—both directly and indirectly—on the environment. The Heat Is On The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon in which metropolitan areas are typically warmer than nearby rural areas mainly due to the large areas of paved surfaces and buildings that capture the sun’s energy, hold it and slowly radiate the heat back out into the air. The concentration of heat in these densely populated regions creates additional health risks for residents due to heat exposure and the enhanced formation of air pollutants, especially ozone. Rooftops, roads and parking lots comprise a large percentage of the man-made surface area in urban areas. When

analyzing effective UHI mitigation strategies, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory determined that widespread deployment of “cool roofs” and “cool pavements” would decrease urban temperatures, which in turn could offset some or all of the projected future warming trends. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is one that has been designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. Beyond the building itself, cool roofs can also benefit the environment by: • Reducing local air temperatures; • Lowering peak electricity demand, which can help prevent power outages; and • Reducing power plant emissions, including carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and mercury. In order to help protect the environment and meet increasingly stringent ordinances calling for cool roof technology, 3M developed Cool Roofing Granules. These granules are used in shingles that

can be energy efficient, solar reflective and economically friendly. This technology can reduce urban heating as well as lower energy consumption in climates with year-round cooling needs. In addition, many of the shingles that contain 3M Cool Granules meet Energy Star requirements, making them the premier choice for green building. Further, the granules are available in a wide variety of rich colors that can create the perfect shingle color blend. The Eradication of Smog Another problem in urban areas is smog pollution, caused by a buildup of nitrogen oxides in the air. An estimated four in 10 Americans currently live in counties with unhealthy levels of particle pollution. To combat this growing concern, 3M recently launched Smog-reducing Granules, which help remove smog pollution using roofing shingles. Integrated throughout a shingle’s surface, the granules are designed with a specialized photocatalytic coating

applied to the base mineral. As sunlight hits the shingles, radicals are generated, transforming nitrogen oxide gases into water-soluble ions, thereby improving air quality. “3M is leading the way with roofing technology solutions for improving environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” said Frank Klink, Ph.D., senior laboratory manager, 3M. “The roofing granules

are a first for residential asphalt shingles.
