Town Honors Local Hero An off-duty security guard was hailed at the Town of Islip August Town Board meeting, for helping police apprehend a suspect who allegedly robbed a local 7-11 recently. Gary Stack, of Holbrook, was sitting in his car in the parking lot of a nearby 7-11 after picking up a cup of coffee inside the store around 6 am, when he saw a man run out of

the store. Seconds later, a 7-11 employee burst through the doors yelling for help, that the store had just been robbed. Stack, a private security officer, followed the suspect who was running on foot to his getaway car. He chased the car while using his hand’s FREE device to call the police. It wasn’t too long before the driver of the getaway

car stopped, exited with his hands up. Seconds later, the suspect jumped from the car and offered Gary the proceeds from the cash register, in exchange for not calling the police. Within minutes, the police arrived and Gary directed the officers to the woods, where the robber was apprehended.

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

Students Attend LILTA Summer Institute

Islip High School students Lilian Arriaza and Isabella Bentacur Vanegas, both former English Language Learners, were among 13 female Long Island high schoolers recently given the opportunity to attend the LILTA Young Women’s Summer Institute at Stony Brook University as part of a collaboration between the university, Islip’s ENL and World Languages Department, the Long Island Latino Teachers Association and Flutterﬂies Inc. During their time at the institute, the two

Islip students became familiarized with the college experience as well as careers in the STEAM fields of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Arriaza and Bentacur Vanegas attended numerous workshops and training events tackling subjects such as salary negotiation skills, geology exploration, biometrical engineering, financial aid and writing college admission essays. “Our English Language Learners deserve equitable and inclusive learning opportunities that will prepare them for college,

career readiness and beyond,” said Priscilla Zarate, Islip’s coordinator of ENL and world languages. “By providing these experiences to our students, we are setting them up with pathways for academic success and also helping them bring out those hidden potentials that they may not yet realize they hold within. Through these learning opportunities, our students discovered skills and interests they didn’t realize they had, especially in STEAM.”

Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, NY. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs

must be on leashes and all cats and ferrets must be in carriers. Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. New York State and

Suffolk County laws require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. Although no raccoons have tested positive for the rabies virus in Suffolk County since 2009, three to six percent of the bats
