Family Service League offers welcome relief for families facing economic hardship by providing new backpacks complete with supplies necessary to prepare children for the start of the school year. “On average, it can cost over $100 per child in school supplies each year. This cost can be overwhelming to families whose budgets are already strained by rent, health care costs, and utilities. Last year, Family Service League provided over 2,000 children with backpacks filled with the items they needed for a successful start to the school year. Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Maker Faire Attendees Makers from across the country converged on Washington, D.C. in June to attend the inaugural National Maker Faire, an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and

commercial exhibitors. Among the exhibitors chosen to participate were two local school librarians, Kristina Holzweiss of Bay Shore Middle School and Gina Seymour of Islip High School, who were promoting their successful SLIME endeavor from earlier in the spring. The

teachers have applied for Maker Faire status for SLIME, which stands for Students of Long Island Maker Expo. At the Faire, Holzweiss and Seymour provided attendees with numerous hands-on maker activities utilizing recyclables.

Longtime Resident Adopted

The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently said goodbye to their longest resident, Hazel, a tan colored American Staffordshire Terrier mix, as her new owners signed the adoption paperwork. Hazel came to the Islip Animal Shelter on June 14, 2013 as a shy and skinny six month old puppy. She was passed by for 790 days before her new family came along. For the past year and a half, Hazel was part of the shelter’s training program, run by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue. She learned her leash manners, basic commands, and how

to behave in group and public settings. Hazel had just recently showed off her skills at the Shelter’s Choice Awards fundraiser, where Hazel was used for the training demo. “We are thrilled to announce that, though it may have taken 790 days, Hazel has finally found the perfect family and is home,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “We encourage our resident to always inquire about our long-timers at the shelter when looking for their next family member. These are the animals that need a home the most.” Hazel was one of a dozen

“long-timers” (an animal that has been waiting six months or longer) at the shelter. Michael Gregory DeCanio successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 1st, 2015, officially making him the 58th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Michael’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, October 4th, starting at 1 p.m. at the West Islip Fire

Michael DeCanio is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski and formally of Troop 508, Islip – with Scoutmaster Dr. William Pomerantz. On his “road to Eagle,” Michael has served the Troop as Troop Guide, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Patrol Leader. Michael has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in two of the National Boy Scout High Adventure venues – Florida Sea Base, where Michael and his crew scuba dived in the Florida Keys for seven days

and Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM, where Michael and his crew backpacked, hiked, and camped in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of the 210 square mile facility. Michael also attended a variety of Boy Scout Summer Camps for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Michael has actually earned a total of 24 merit badges. The Service Project

that Michael developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the mason planter on the front of the Exchange Ambulance of the Islips, a special place for Michael as he continues to serve as an EMS volunteer. As Michael reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Throughout my Scouting career, I‘ve had many unimaginable experiences. I’ve been able to enjoy four separate summer camps on five separate occasions. I’ve also been given the opportunity to also visit two of the Boy Scout high adventure bases – Philmont and Florida Sea Base. My favorite of all my scouting experiences

would have to be my trip to the Florida Sea Base. Michael went on to say, “I’ve made so many friends through Scouting. Through Scouts, I have learned so many social skills that I know will help me through everything – whether it be applying for a job or college. I am currently considering a career in nursing and I know that while keeping the Scout Laws in mind, that I will be able to help people in so many ways, physically and emotionally.” Michael will be entering his senior year at East Islip High School this fall. Upon his graduation this next spring, Michael’s plans are to attend college. During Michael’s high

school years, he has been a member of the cross country, winter, and spring track teams. Community service has been important to Michael as he continues to be a member of the Exchange Ambulance of the Islips Youth Squad as he is on ambulance calls each Thursday evenings from 6pm to midnight. He has held the positions of Treasurer, Second Vice President, and currently first Vice President. Michael is the son of Gregory and Kimberly DeCanio, East Islip, and sibling to Lauren DeCanio.

Crisis Counselor Training Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a

nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program

Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th. Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University. No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required. Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 4,000 Andrew constructed a telephone “visits” yearly bench with planters, as well as a garden bed, at the Commack Road Park, which is located on Commack Road and Spur Drive South in Islip. Andrew wanted to beautify the park and make it more enjoyable for the community. to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line. Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th, and continues on

Legislator Tom Cilmi paid tribute to Eagle Scout Andrew Cruz of Islip Boy Scout Troop 370 at his recent Court of Honor. Andrew earned 43 merit badges, including 13 Eagle Scout badges. He served Boy Scout Troop 370 as an Assistant Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader and
