Cute and adorable kitten sisters. Jason Cohen has been named the new assistant principal of Islip Middle School, replacing Bryan Miltenberg. Since 2006, Cohen had been a teacher at the middle school and Islip High School as well as an athletic trainer at the high school. He previously worked as a student teacher in the Bay Shore School District at Bay Shore Middle School and Fifth Avenue Elementary School, as an athletic trainer in the South Huntington School District, and as an assistant athletic trainer at Molloy College A West Islip resident, he earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training at Hofstra University, his master’s degree in physical education at Adelphi University and an advanced graduate Certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. “As an educator in the Islip School District for the past 13 years, I am honored to have been chosen as the new assistant principal of the middle school,” Cohen said. “My goal is to deepen and expand the relationships I have formed with students, staff and parents throughout the years and create an inclusive environment while continuing to be an empowering team player that enjoys collaborating with all the stakeholders of the Islip community to benefit all.”

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Teams of second graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently worked to open temporary class stores at “Ms. Mercurio’s Market” during their unit on money. The students began by choosing store names, organizing their store rules and displaying the rules on store banners, which were then hung up in preparation for the next phase of the project. After they finished the planning phase of their store, they visited the “warehouse” to decide which items they wanted to sell at each store. Each team member was responsible for paying teacher Patrice Mercurio for every item, using their own real coins brought from home. Next, the children set up their stores with the items they purchased at the warehouse and took turns shopping at the various stores in the market. They

TEN YEAR OLD RAISES MONEY - Legislator Steven Flotteron supported his friend, Ten year old Oliver Rivadeneyra, enjoying a cupcake and lemonade at his Islip Terrace home. For the past five years Oliver has run his Lemonade Stand, which he built with his father, to benefit children with cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He got the idea while watching TV with his grandmother and saw a commercial for St. Jude’s. He has raised nearly $5,000 for the hospital. He brings the yearly proceeds check to the hospital’s business office. On one of his visits administrators gave him a stuffed animal that belonged to one the children fighting cancer. The child used the stuffed toy as a comfort tool and wanted Oliver to know how much his fundraising efforts meant.
