bakery, Gourmet Pet Treats by Lucky and Max. Bear was responsible for saving his new adoptive owner, Carol Swinson, and her nine-year-old grandson, DJ, after a fire broke up at their Brentwood home. Bear jumped on top of Carol to wake her up and alert her of the danger. The family was able to escape the fire safely and they are currently living in a trailer until their home can be fully repaired. The Swinson family rescued Bear only two weeks before the fire occurred. “The Swinson family rescued Bear, and in turn, Bear rescued them from imminent danger - this is an amazing story with a fortunate ending,” Bergin Weichbrodt said. “Bear represents dozens of deserving dogs available for adoption at our Shelter and we encourage everyone to meet them personally.” Bear was also rewarded with two baskets of toys collected by the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopta-Pet Center, Bear’s former home. A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

East Islip High School students have completed a two-year project designing and constructing a pond ecosystem in the courtyard between the academic hallways. This “living laboratory” is already paying dividends by providing science students from across the district with an opportunity to study in a real-world environment. “Seeing students of all ages out there in the environment has been an excellent experience, one
that will continue to benefit the children of East Islip for years to come,” said teacher Paul McHugh. The pond was created through a collaborative effort by teacher Genesis Dawson and the school’s Science Honor Society, McHugh and East Islip’s Environmental Club, and students from the Environment Green Career Academy. After digging the hole and installing the liner for the pond, plantings and compost were added in both

the fall and spring during the 2011-2012 school year. In the spring of 2013, the pond was improved with wallstone placed around the edge. Additional plantings and paths are planned for 2013-2014. “We could not have completed the project without the assistance and generosity of many different people and organizations,” said McHugh, who noted that the pond liner was donated by the Firestone Company, while pond
architect Butch Starkie from Starkie Bros. Garden Center provided the equipment and expertise needed to complete the project. Many plants were donated from the Town of Islip and the Long Island Natural Grass Initiative. Students, staff and visitors to the high school are invited to view the pond. “If you are in the high school and would like to visit the pond environment, it may be viewed from any of the window areas in the cross
hallways,” said McHugh. “Try taking a look from the first and second floors for a different perspective of the overall project.” East Islip students from kindergarten to high school have already benefited by visiting and observing many different aspects of the natural world. One of the biggest hits of the pond environment is the mother duck and her ducklings. “For many years, female mallard ducks built nests and hatched ducklings
in the relatively empty courtyard,” explained McHugh. “Now the ducks have a natural environment in which they can use resources such as the pond to swim and the food and cover of the native plants and grasses.” RCK kindergartners made field trips to the pond this past May, studying the ducks’ behavior and releasing one of their classroom newts into its new home in the pond.

Residents, businesses, and community leaders can all benefit from this system, which can instantaneously pass important information to those who have signed up. The system has been established in such a way that even if the Town’s communications network compromised, E-Alerts can still be sent from off-site servers. Stony Brook University Hospital has named Mary Briney as Volunteer of the Year and Elizabeth O’Grady as Junior Volunteer of the Year for 2013 in recognition of their dedicated volunteer service to the hospital. O’Grady and Briney were among those honored at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon, held on July
17th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Volunteers received awards for reaching service milestones ranging from 100 to 14,500 hours of service. Briney began her volunteer service in 2011 and has donated nearly 500 hours to Stony Brook University Cancer Center patients. “At the Cancer Center, Mary coordinates the bi-
weekly soup luncheon where she prepares warm bowls of soup to distribute to patients who are looking for a soothing snack while receiving their cancer treatments,” said Kathy Kress, Assistant Director of Volunteer Services at SBUH. “At the hospital, Mary acts as the ambassador for the inpatient Arts in Medicine program. She is always
there to help out so that the patients get the most benefit from the activity. Mary is affable, empathetic and a genuine caring person. She is always in tune with the patients’ needs and always makes sure whatever is needed is done with care and accuracy.” O’Grady, 18, was born at Stony Brook University Hospital and spent time as

The daughter of Jerome and Marian O’Grady, she is a rising senior at Ward Melville High School. “Elizabeth has been described as a very mature and responsible high school student,” Kress said. “In the playroom, she engages in various play activities with the patients and their siblings and goes out of her way to make sure that the children have whatever they need. She has been known to stay after her shift to find a missing game or DVD that a child has asked for. Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable
recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles.
Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th.
