In the months and weeks prior to planting, the students also removed soil, grass and weeds from the front lawn, mulched the site, conducted soil and water quality tests, observed the permeability of the soil after it rains, and developed informative signage. “Working with Seatuck to create this garden will help us to protect the future by returning to the past,” Mills said. “Native plants help restore ecosystems by fostering biodiversity, encourage carbon sequestration and increase water quality. The students at Islip learned about the harmful effects of nitrogen pollution, climate change and the insect apocalypse, and our native garden will serve as a means of remediation and hope. The plants were selected with the idea that ‘If you build it, they will come,’ in hopes that many bird, butterfly and insect species will take refuge on our school grounds. It will be enjoyed by the students of Islip of all ages as well as the community for many years to come.”

Back To School How To Support Students Interested In The Arts

Schools are diverse communities in which people from all walks of life gather to teach, learn and pursue an assortment of interests and passions. Students are perhaps the best reflection of that diversity, as even small schools are home to young people who excel in sports, music, theatre, and of course, academics. Many young people harbor a strong interest in the arts, which can provide some surprising benefits. For example, the National Endowment for the Arts reports that students with high arts participation and low socioeconomic status have a 4 percent dropout rate. That’s five times lower than their low socioeconomic status peers. In addition, a report from the Rice Kinder Institute for Urban Research found that arts education experiences reduce the proportion of students in school receiving disciplinary infractions by 3.6 percent. Despite the myriad benefits of participation in arts education, which can include improved

performance in the classroom, Americans for the Arts notes that not all students have access to art-based educational experiences. Parents of students who are interested in the arts can try various approaches to nurture those interests. • Support school-based arts education programs. Funding for arts programs is perpetually in jeopardy. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education. • Make art a part of life at home. Americans for the Arts recommends that parents make the arts part of life at home.

Participating alongside children as they sing, dance, draw, play music or pursue other artsbased interests is a great way to incorporate the arts into home life while showing kids how fun the arts can be. • Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children. Arts education can have a profound impact on the life of a young person. There are many ways for parents to nurture and encourage their children’s interest in the arts.

She then spent the following nine months completing the grant proposal at home during the pandemic, sending videos to Principal Timothy Martin and other Islip administrators during periods when it was not possible to meet in person. “I spent the past year dreaming about completing this project with my students, and was fortunate to have the support of my administration and building principal,” Mills said. “Submitting the proposal despite the pandemic will always be one of my most memorable professional achievements.” As part of the project, Mills’ science classes worked virtually via Zoom with Seatuck Education Director Peter Walsh and landscape designer Sue Avery, discussing the ecological benefits of rain gardens and setting the class off on a design charette in which the students worked in teams to design and present their versions of the garden. In a longterm partnership, the project was coordinated by the Seatuck Environmental Association, which worked with Mills and her students every step of the way. Seven years ago, Mills began her professional “metamorphosis” at Greentree Foundation’s Teachers Ecology Workshop, a weeklong event led by local environmentalists, scientists and professors. Home to one of the most beautiful native plant meadows on Long Island, the Greentree estate encourages educators to implement a native garden at their schools for both educational and environmental purposes. A New York State Master Teacher whose accolades include being named 2019 Suffolk Science Teachers Association of New York State Middle Level Teacher of the Year and winning the 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators, Mills began searching for grant opportunities last

Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience.

Benefits To Cooking Your Own Meals Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or takeout foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. Back To School How Volunteering Benefits Students Volunteering is often seen through the lens of how volunteers help to improve their communities. Though there’s no denying the valuable role volunteers play in strengthening their communities, it’s worth noting just how much volunteers can benefit from donating their time and effort to worthy causes. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness asked 70,000 participants about their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. Volunteering

The National Association of Colleges and Employers reports that employers expect to hire 7.2 percent more new college graduates from the class of 2021 than they did from the class of 2020. Volunteering with an organization in their field can be a great way for current students and recent graduates to get their foot in the door. Even if a volunteering opportunity does not

As the need for food donations continues to rise dramatically, Riverheadbased RISE Life Services will host FOODSTOCK on September 18, a event featuring live music, food and art with the goal of raising money and collecting food for RISE Food Pantries. “This will be a memorable event, one that people will want to come to year after year, and help their neighbors who are facing historic needs,” said Charles Evdos,

Busy schedules, hybrid learning and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other, and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior, but students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 percent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed.

They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading.

Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time! LI Live Steamers offers various types of memberships; Junior Membership, for those 16-18 years old, Full Membership, for those over 18 years of age, and Family Membership! Membership starts at only $50/year and there is a one time initiation fee of $100. Please note, only full members can qualify to operate club trains.

If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals. Members are assigned to various duties during public run days, which are typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. Some positions a member may be assigned are Ticket Booth Attendants, Ticket Takers, Station Masters and Souvenir Stand Attendants. Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation Awards Grant To Montauk Point Lighthouse feasibility and engineering studies to determine the causes and extent of the damage. “For centuries, the lighthouse has been exposed to the most extreme weather conditions,” said Nick Racanelli, construction expert and MHS Board member. “We found that the lantern and its metal work had begun to deteriorate, allowing water to pour into the cavity between the inner and outer walls of the tower, where it froze and thawed. This led to cracking, bulging and spalling of the historic sandstone, which was aggravated by previous repairs that used hard cement, further weakening the stone.” The MHS Board made the decision to proceed immediately with a full restoration, before the integrity of the 18th-century tower was compromised. They completed the first phase of work in 2020, repairing the metal work to minimize further water infiltration. The second phase of work calls for stripping the structure of its many layers of existing coatings, repointing all the joints with lime-putty mortar, and repairing the damaged stone and brickwork. “Phase Two is the most extensive and expensive phase of the restoration, and this is where the Gardiner Foundation will make a huge difference,” said Racanelli. “Getting a large grant like this allows us to complete these vital repairs, while continuing to keep our museum open and offer our visitors interesting and exciting programming. It makes all the difference.” “The history of the Montauk Lighthouse as an original welcoming beacon to New York coupled with its striking presence makes an iconic symbol not only of Long Island but of hope and safe harbor to millions,” said Kathryn Curran, Executive Director of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation. “The Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation's mission is to promote the advancement of our regional history. We are delighted to be working with the Montauk Historical Society on the restoration of this important historic structure.” Established in 1987, the Robert David Lion

Gardiner Foundation primarily supports the study of Long Island history. Robert David Lion Gardiner was, until his death in August 2005, the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island, NY. The Gardiner family and their descendants have owned Gardiner’s Island since 1639, obtained as part of a royal grant from King Charles I of England. The Montauk Historical Society (MHS) has announced receipt of a grant of $390,700 from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for the restoration of the iconic 225-year-old sandstone and brick Montauk Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse, commissioned in 1792 by President George Washington, was built in 1796 and has served as an aid to navigation ever since. Citing high maintenance costs, the U.S. Coast Guard considered abandoning the historic structure and replacing it with a skeletal tower and light. Instead, they agreed to sell it to the Montauk Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Coast Guard still maintains the beacon, visible over 19 nautical miles, but care of the grounds, and maintenance and repair of the buildings, are the sole responsibility of MHS. “We are able to fund the everyday interior and exterior upkeep of the lighthouse through entry fees, gift-shop sales, and private donations,” said Dick White, MHS Treasurer and Chair of the Lighthouse Committee. “But when substantial restoration work needs to be done, we have to seek other ways to fund it. We are immensely grateful to the Gardiner Foundation for stepping up to help us save this National Historic Landmark.” Construction professionals on the MHS Board had been monitoring worsening water damage on the exterior and interior of the lighthouse tower, and in 2016 and 2017, they commissioned

How To Keep Gardens Safe In Summer Heat Waves Summer is a season to relax and enjoy the warm weather. Basking in the summer sun is a great way to relax, but only when the temperatures are safe. Summer heat waves can compromise the health of human beings as well as their pets. Gardening enthusiasts also may need to go the extra mile to keep their plants and gardens from wilting under harsh summer sun. Extreme heat stress can be very harmful to plants. The online gardening resource Gardening Know How notes that some plants can withstand summer heat waves better than others. For example, succulents conserve water in their leaves, helping them to withstand heat waves when the dog days of summer arrive. But succulents are unique, and many plants will require a little extra help to withstand a heat wave. • Take a proactive approach with mulch. Gardeners need not wait until the heat arrives to protect their plants from searing summer heat. The sustainable living experts at Eartheasy recommend utilizing light-colored mulch during heat waves. Such mulch will reflect the sunlight and help to maintain cooler surface soil conditions. Eartheasy even notes that grass clippings, once they’ve turned from green to light brown, can make for the perfect mulch to protect plants from the heat. Clippings also are free, making them a cost-effective

solution. • Water wisely. The horticultural experts at Yates Gardening note that water only helps plants withstand heat waves if it’s applied effectively. If water is only applied in short bursts and not long enough so it can penetrate all the way to the root zone, roots will then stay near the surface. In such instances, roots will dry out during a heat wave and plants won’t make it through the season. Timing also is essential when watering. Eartheasy recommends watering in the morning to avoid heat scald and also ensure as little water is lost to evaporation as possible. When watering during a heat wave, do so by hand rather than through a sprinkler. Hand watering allows gardeners to direct all of the

water onto the plants that need it most during a heat wave. • Let your plants pitch in. When planting new plants, it’s important that gardeners recognize it takes time for these plants to establish their roots so they’re strong enough to withstand heat waves. In the meantime, strategic planting can help them make it through their first heat waves unscathed. Eartheasy notes that planting by taller, more established plants can provide new plants with shade that can help them survive heat waves. Just make sure new plants can still get the sun they need to thrive. Heat waves are inevitable and potentially harmful to gardens. Gardeners can help their plants beat the heat in various ways.

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
