Seek Shade. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM, and use an umbrella while on the beach. On walks, keep to the shady side of the street and use a sun shield on your stroller. Cover Up. Keep your baby covered up with a brimmed hat and lightweight clothing that fully covers the arms and legs. For added protection, look for special clothing marked with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or more. Be Careful in the Car. While glass screens out most UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, UVA rays can penetrate windows. Like UVB rays, UVA rays damage DNA and can lead to skin cancer. By law, front windshields are treated to filter out most UVA, but side and rear windows generally aren’t. Consider buying a UV shield, which you can hang over any window that allows sunlight to reach the child’s car seat. Another option is to install professional UV-blocking window film. Start Sunscreen at 6 Months. Since infants’ skin is so sensitive, it’s best to keep them out of the sun completely. Beginning at 6 months of age, you can introduce sunscreen use. Choose a broad-spectrum,

water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look at active ingredients; zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good choices, because these inorganic filters are less apt to cause a skin reaction. You may want to test sunscreen on the inside of your baby’s wrist. If the child has a little irritation, try another sunscreen. Use Sunscreen As Directed. Use sunscreen on all exposed areas not covered by clothing, such as the back of the hands, face, ears and neck. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply it every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Toddlers rarely stand still, so you may need to get creative with your sunscreen application routine. Sunscreen sticks work well for the face and hands, since the child is less likely to rub the product into their eyes. Sprays are another good option. Make sure to apply the sunscreen evenly and liberally all over exposed skin, then rub in. For the face, spray into your hands, then apply to your child’s face. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “That’s why it’s so important that parents make sun protection for infants and toddlers a priority and eventually teach children these habits that will benefit them for many years to come.” The Skin Cancer Foundation wants parents and caregivers to know that skin cancer is highly preventable and offers the following tips to help keep young children sun-safe for the rest of the summer and all year long:

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Former Student Inspires ‘Daley’ Lesson Inspired by conversations with Class of 2010 alumna Samantha Daley, East Islip High School English teacher Gregory Kguloian developed an Accountable Independent Reading program for his sophomore class. “Talking with Samantha gave me the opportunity to revisit the way my class assignments have been delivered, received and remembered by students,” Kguloian said. “I want to help the students in my

class see that the lessons they learn are designed to connect to and build their awareness of the world around them, and to prepare them for success as they transition into the next grade. I also want each young person to know that it isn’t only educators who can inspire and motivate their pupils. Teachers can also be inﬂuenced by their students.” In this AIR unit, each student chose their own young adult book of more than 200 pages to read, took

detailed notes in a reading journal and then shared interesting information that they learned with their classroom peers via verbal reviews. “I think the books we read recently in this program are better than the earlier ones,” said Kristina Fiumara. “With this unit, we branched out and learned what our interests are, not just what we are supposed to read for school.”
