All my teammates were incredible – I could not have asked for a better group of athletes to travel to China and share memories with. I now have friends from all over the world who I met while training or in the dining hall.” Newhoff found the experience at the World Race Walking Cup – a biennial event featuring competitors from more than 50 countries – both educational and culturally enriching, particularly during the team’s local excursions in Taicang after workouts. “We explored a market, a main street and a very modern mall, and also visited a temple and park,” she said. “Because we were Team USA, many people wanted to take pictures with us and get our autographs. I hope I have many more opportunities like this in the future, because it was an unforgettable experience.” In addition to mentoring from race walk coach Brian Savickis, Newhoff attributes her success to family tradition, as elder siblings Jason, Josh, Rachel and Alex all participated in track at FUEL OIL East Islip High OSchool. Make A Wish By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holiday… Me, I
fall somewhere in between. It’s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been
mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic that’s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment – even if it is, literally, just one moment – each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. We are all works in progress. So blow out the candles, make a wish, and celebrate the next step of the journey.

Resident Honored The Islip Town Board honored David D. Kemler, Islip Town resident and valued North Shore LIJ Southside Hospital employee, for his creation of the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk model that is currently on display at Long Island MacArthur Airport. In an effort to honor and commemorate our nation’s heroes, Mr. Kemler constructed a model of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk as well as key planes of each era
of warfare throughout history, including the F-14 Tomcat, F-22 Raptor, A-10 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, B-2 Stealth and the B-17G Flying Fortress. The U.S.S. Kitty Hawk (CV-63) was the lead ship of the Navy’s second class of “Super Carriers.” It was commissioned on April 29th, 1961, and decommissioned on May 12th, 2009. It was in service for more than 45 years and completed 18 deployments around the
world. Mr. Kemler was inspired to create this ship, over other historic ships, when finding out one of his co-workers served on the ship from 2000 to 2004. “Dave has gone above and beyond to show his recognition for those who have served our country. His efforts have been immense and should not go unnoticed. He is truly an inspiration to his friends, family, and coworkers,” said Councilman John Cochrane, Jr.
