United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27 or exit 67 off the LIE) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonproﬁt organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulﬁllment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations. Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.

Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest.

Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a proclamation to Anndrea Pumay, winner of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Anndrea is a third grade student from JFK Elementary School in East Islip. Having been selected by Legislator Cilmi as the 10th District winner, Anndrea’s poster was submitted and subsequently chosen by the Legislature’s Budget Review Office as the overall County-wide winner. More than 200 entries were

submitted to Legislator Cilmi’s office alone. Due to COVID, the Legislature was not able to honor last year’s contestants so Legislator Cilmi also presented a certificate to Alyssa Toala, a second grade student from Connetquot Elementary School in Islip Terrace, whose poster placed second in the 2020 County-wide contest. Legislator Cilmi said, “Anndrea is the third County-wide winner from

the 10th District in the last twelve years, all of whom came from the East Islip School District. That tells me two things: first, we have some really creative young people in East Islip; second, we have some very inspiring teachers. My congratulations go to Anndrea and her teacher Mrs. Wilson, and my thanks goes to all those students and teachers who participated.”

Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride. The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Awards 10 Scholarships

Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - recently awarded ten new scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. Family Center for Autism’s scholarship funds are generated through private donations and

enable the organization to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of its programs. Since its inception in 2015, the program has awarded approximately 250 scholarships valued at over $250,000. More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with

developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

OAKWOOD CEMETERY TOUR - On June 13th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet and the Bay Shore Historical Society co-hosted the 2nd Oakwood Cemetery Tour, “A Walk Through Time with Islip and Bay Shore’s Famous & Infamous”. Nearly 300 people attended the tour learning about the various residents of both hamlets, some by their living family members. Jean Marie and Chris Reiszl are shown portraying Phoebe and Fredrick Wright, who, through letters to each other, documented what LIFE’S WORC’S FAMILY CENTER FOR AUTISM AWARDS 10 SCHOLARSHIPS went on during the Civil War. Two graduating seniors from East Islip High School’s Class of 2021, Peter Carino and Olivia Zhang, recently received appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy after an extremely rigorous and demanding application process. Both graduates were honored on June 9 in a ceremony in the school’s outdoor pavilion presided over by USNA Blue & Gold Officer Mary Ann Coughlin, who is also a retired East Islip teacher. “I have wanted to serve in the military since the eighth grade,” Carino said. “I planned to enlist after college. However, the Naval Academy seemed like the best option for

me to take on a leadership position and become an officer. I look forward to the challenges I am soon to embark on throughout my years as a midshipman. I plan on majoring in history and pursuing a career in special operations upon graduation.” “My desire to join the Navy was fueled by my passion to work in the aviation community,” Zhang said. “As a firstgeneration student and first-generation American with no family military history, wanting to join the Navy was unconventional, but I had an interest in aviation and aeronautics and I also had a desire to serve the nation. I visited

the Naval Academy when I was 12 years old and from then on, I made it my goal to attend USNA after high school. I joined the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps when I was 13. Throughout over four years in the program, I was given an exclusive insight into life in the Naval service, which furthered my desire to join the Navy. I was able to earn the rank of chief petty officer, the program’s highest rank, one which less than 1% of U.S. Naval Sea Cadets have been able to reach. I plan to major in aerospace engineering and minor in Chinese. I hope to commission into naval aviation after I graduate as a naval aviator.”
