Through August 27 Juror Carol Fabricatore invited artists to enter works that captured the spirit, movement, emotions of their subject. We were looking for works inspired by life… works that conjured narratives…that took us to places we had never seen… or introduced us to people and places. Artists build their work through inspiration, references, sketches, models, underpaintings and other modes of planning. An artist’s Little Black Book is often a secret stash

of intimate expressions, innermost thoughts, and experimental techniques that lay the groundwork for their final piece. Entrants were required to submit writeups digital images, sketches, etc. that showed the evolution of each piece they entered into the show. About the juror: Carol Fabricatore is an artist in the New York City area who is a great observer of all things and likes to approach creating narrative imagery beginning with an emotional connection to an idea. She often gravitates

towards subject matter that might be seen in one’s peripheral vision or passed by on the way to something in the mainstream. She has produced art for books, magazines, newspapers, and projects for design and advertising firms. Carol has taught narrative drawing at the School of Visual Arts since 1994. She has had work in American Illustration, Communication Arts Illustration Annual, Society of Illustrators, Creative Quarterly and has won awards in the Society

of Newspaper Design, The San Francisco Show - Gold winner, Graphic Design USA; Desi Award, Graphis; Top Ten Illustrated Annual Reports & Society of Illustrators Los Angeles among many others. Smithtown Township Arts Council Inc. is a recognized 501 (c) (3) notfor-profit organization, classified as a public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. Seasonal Boat Slips Now Available At Robert Moses State Park East Marina The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that seasonal boat slips at the Robert Moses State Park East Marina are available for rent. Interested boaters can obtain an application to reserve a slip by visiting the Robert Moses State Park Office.

The Robert Moses State Park East Marina has forty (40) boat slips, which are available from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. East Marina Seasonal slips will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and will be assigned by Robert Moses State Park. In the event the marina has reached capacity, you will be placed on the wait list.

A seasonal boat slip costs $50 per foot. Slips can accommodate vessels up to 40 feet long with a maximum beam of 14 feet. Each slip has potable water, two cleats, and electric hook-up. The power source is 50 amps (50/125). Boaters must supply their own ropes, adapters, and extension cords. Each slip includes

one vehicle parking permit. No overnight visitor parking will be permitted. Boaters who rent a slip during the 2022 season will automatically be renewed for the 2023 season. Robert Moses State Park is located at the south end of the Robert Moses Causeway and can be reached by the

Matthew Sundberg Delivers At Bowling Nationals

East Islip eighth grader Matthew Sundberg delivered an outstanding performance at the 2022 U.S. High School Bowling National Championship, hosted by the U.S. High School Bowling Foundation in Louisville, Kentucky from June 18-20. A three-day competition featuring both singles and team events, this was the sixth U.S. High School Bowling National Championship event to showcase the best boys and girls high school bowlers from across the country. Athletes from more than 25 states were in attendance. Sundberg, one of the youngest competitors in a field of 354 varsity boys, finished the tournament in the top 15 percent of

athletes, ranked at No. 49. On Sunday, he bowled a four-game set and averaged 215.75 for the day, enough to move him to the first cut where the field went to 180. He was ranked in 36th place. On Monday, survivor rounds commenced. Each round was cumulative total pin fall and after the first round, Sundberg made the cut to top 90 and was ranked in 24th place. During the next round, lane conditions changed, but he managed to cover all his makeable spares. He was eliminated at the end of the round after a few splits, falling just seven pins short. Over the course of two days, Sundberg missed only one makeable spare. He is currently competing in the under-20

category at the 2022 Junior Gold Championships, held from July 11-15 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sundberg, who recently graduated from East Islip Middle School and will attend East Islip High School as a freshman in September, finished second in Suffolk County this year with a 233 average, earning him All-Star honors as well as All-League and AllCounty recognition. “Matt has a really super future ahead of him,Re: Steve Tsimis Acct # 127229 and represents East Islip with pride and outstanding sportsmanship whenever he is on the lanes,” coach Judy Fischer said. “This was a wonderful opportunity for this young man.”

Three East Islip Photographers Honored At Huntington Camera Club East Islip High School photography students recently participated in the annual Huntington Camera Club High School Photography Competition, sponsored by Nikon. The students were guided by teachers Amarilis Singh and Heather Toomey. Marni Jacobowitz took first place in traditional black and white photography, Kelly Waldron received honorable mention, and Naomy Mukai was awarded the 2022 Roberta Strent Memorial Award. A $500 award in memory of photographer and Huntington Camera Club member Roberta Strent, the latter is bestowed on a high school student who has demonstrated a superior aptitude and continuing interest in photography. The students were recognized at an awards ceremony held at Huntington Public Library. “It was unexpected to be acknowledged by some of the top photography students on Long Island, but it was very exciting, and I was very honored,” Waldron said. “I am very honored to have been acknowledged

during this year’s Huntington Camera Club competition,” Jacobowitz said. “Last year, I had the honor of working with Mrs. Toomey, who kickstarted my love of photography. This year, I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Singh, who guided me through the darkroom and helped me grow as an artist. The art department at East Islip High School has allowed me to continue my love for art and has helped me flourish into who I am today. Winning this award has given me the opportunity to continue to learn new techniques and the courage to continue pursuing art.” “Winning the Roberta Strent Memorial Award for the medium that brings me the most joy is a huge honor,” Mukai said. “I would like to thank everyone who helped me through this process and gave me the tools I needed to succeed. I am able to put my ideas and thoughts into a visual representation, and that feeling means the world to me. I will forever push myself to create and am unbelievably proud of what we have accomplished together.”

“Strings Attached” is led by Barbara Llobell, a retired educator from Great River who has studied violin for many years. Barbara had been an instructor of competitive marching bands and winter guards. Barbara also plays guitar and has been studying the cello within the past year. According to Barbara: “’Strings Attached’ is a serendipitous product of the pandemic. It began as a group of four violinists planning to play a garden tour cancelled by the lockdown. It morphed into an ensemble of players sharing music and friendship.” Now, the ensemble welcomes players of all ages and abilities and has grown to eleven musicians. Over the past two years the ensemble has performed locally and is one of the groups that has recorded music for “The BAFFA Beat Goes On”, an online series of videos created during the pandemic to keep BAFFA

(Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts, Sayville, New York) alive. Other members of “Strings Attached” who will be playing at Kolstein on August 12th include: ---Danae Butler, has been playing violin for 25 years. She is a member of the BAFFA Symphony Orchestra and the BASO-Bay Area Symphony Orchestra. playing cello for seventeen years. She is a member of BAFFA, BASO and “Strings Attached” and is grateful to be involved in all of them. She works as a chemist and considers both music and chemistry her passions. ---Claire Yannacone chose to play the cello as a third grader because everyone else chose violin. She participated in groups through high school, college and beyond including the Sound Symphony, BAFFA, and most recently in the Riverhead High School pit orchestra where she joyfully surprised her science students with her hidden musical talent. ---Kashmere Cooey is the principal flautist of the Bay Area Symphony. She is also a member of the Bay ShoreBrightwaters Symphonic Band. “Strings Attached” is delighted to add a wind player to the ensemble, although Kashmere is talking about taking up the violin.

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 2022-23 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. Storm season is here in New York, is your home ready to withstand the elements this year? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their homes are ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your home that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaks in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home rotting and cause leaks that may make their way into your home. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot and your gutters may fall off due to the excessive water that is filling them and the weakened fascia that is caused by the excessive water damage. Finally, make sure that all of your windows and doors are able to lock & are air-tight so no water is able to infiltrate through these openings. You may also want to check your window wells if you have them. Make sure that the soil is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. These are just a few ways homeowners can prepare for storm season. If you need to upgrade or replace any part of your home’s exterior call UNIFIED.
