Howard Schwartz, principal of Grandstand Sports & Memorabilia, conducted the primary auction, which was highlighted by the appearance of Gianni Russo, one of the stars of the classic film “The Godfather,” to present his donation of an authentic Sicilian dinner for eight and a serenade of Italian classic songs performed by Russo himself. Dr. Waxman then presented SWCRF awards to honorees David Burke, Betsey Johnson and Paul Ridley for their support of fundraising and awareness for cancer research. “A Hamptons Happening” was chaired by event co-founders Marion Waxman and Laurie Schaffran as well as Jennifer Gould Keil and Jill and Bobby Zarin. The
night’s raffle was chaired by Jennifer Myles, who sourced an exciting lineup of designer products donated by Calvin Klein Home, Tori Burch and Lauren Cecchi New York, among many others. Erica Fineberg was the journal chair. Stop Counting, Start Living By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with

just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options
on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

Rain gardens and cisterns will be installed on two campuses of Suffolk County Community College, at the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood and Ammerman Campus in Selden, to help manage stormwater flow thanks to a $393,043 Green Innovation Grant Program award from the New York State Environment Facilities Corporation that was approved by the Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday. Construction is expected to begin in November. “Since 2000, our College has implemented more than 50 green initiatives and this latest grant will enable that work to expand. Combining these varied initiatives with grant resources and our recent decision to establish an Office of Sustainability Programs, we are leading and promoting the importance of emerging renewable technologies,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay. President McKay said the project will also serve as an innovative teaching tool that can be embedded into various College curricula. Students in courses such as construction technology, geology, and engineering, will have an opportunity to study and monitor the effectiveness of the project model. Additionally, the project offers unique opportunities for the community at large to learn about these innovative technologies and how they can protect and sustain our environment. The system works by capturing unfiltered and untreated stormwater that is intercepted and redirected into the new rain gardens. The rain gardens absorb and filter a large portion of the stormwater. The water is then captured and stored in cisterns for

In “Lit.2 Life Chrome,” the latest edition of Greg Kguloian’s ongoing Lit.2 Life cross-curriculum lessons at East Islip High School, the teacher’s freshman and sophomore English classes joined forces to delve into poetry, history and freedom of expression, focusing on the historical poem/song “Donna Donna.” According to student research, “Donna Donna” originated as “Dana Dana,” an anti-Nazi protest song in Yiddish taken from the 1940s musical play “Esterke.” It was later performed in the 1960s as a protest song against the Vietnam War, made famous by musician Joan Baez. The allegory and metaphor within the song appealed to Kguloian’s students, who used it to fuel discussions about the First Amendment as well as the historic

Catching The Big One On July 30th, my father, brother and I took a fishing trip to Montauk. We were going for Striped Bass, but what we found was an inner peace that can only be felt while floating on the water. As Long Islanders, most of us feel at home on the water. The ocean is such a huge part of life here. Fishing, one of Long Island’s most promising industries, is also a longstanding source of fun for people who call this island home. As we took the two hour drive to Montauk, all of us were teeming with excitement. I had never been that far East before, and was really looking forward to it. The boat was loaded with 900
horsepower, the perfect vessel to view the sunrise upon. We began fishing on the bottom for Striped Bass, and caught everything else. Flukes, Sea Bass, Bluefish and Porgies were abundant, while the intended catch was nowhere to be found. We saw baitfish jumping out of the water; they were being chased by larger predators. We decided to try our luck, and casted towards the feeding frenzy. Within seconds, everyone on the boat had a fish on the line. As we reeled them in, it became evident we were fighting Bluefish, which are known for their insane head movements and rapid mentality. They
really didn’t want to end up on the boat. We released all the fish we caught, even though some of them were monsters. After many exciting hours of catching bluefish, on the way back, the boat’s Captain told us to drop our lines one last time. Sure enough, my little brother pulled up the elusive Striped Bass that we had been looking for all day. They say the only way to succeed is to never give up, and in this case, that theory rang true. We ended up with a thirtyseven pounder - a fairly large fish! It was a successful trip, and I can’t wait until our next trip to Montauk.

On August 25th, Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children who are medically fragile will benefit from the Arthur and William J. Memorial 10th Annual Golf Outing. All community members are welcome to attend the event, which will be held at the Nissequogue Golf Club in Saint James. With tee time at 11 a.m., guests will play on the private scenic golf course and enjoy breakfast and lunch. The event will continue at the club house where awards, raffles and
a classic “PACES” dinner complete with PACE’s steak and lobster dinner will be served. “The Pace Family has been an invaluable asset to Angel’s House for their continuous support and generosity, throughout the past 10 years.” Bob Policastro Executive Director and founder said. “The determination of this family to always help has been critically important to our mission of assisting children that are medically frail.” Since 1992, Angela’s
