TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

Armor Museum Opens With COVID-19 Protocols And A Motivational “Call To Arms” From World War II How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the

Covid crisis?’ “Some of the posters are kind of the traditional attack / over the top variety; but then others, like the ‘Knowledge Wins’ poster are more informationbased. Certain images will resonate with some people, and others will prefer a

different approach,” he continued. Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the first line of defense against spreading COVID-19. These imaginative reenvisionings of classic military posters by Dr. Villard are designed to get your attention, focus on COVID precautions, and to do so in a setting that reminds you America has gotten through much worse when it pulled together.” The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles under cover within Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Its re-opening hours are Friday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. An admission donation of $15 for adults is requested, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $8 for children.

SBM Experts Share Pool Safety Tips During the COVID-19 Pandemic As the temperatures continue to rise across Long Island, many are heading in the pool to cool off. But, 2020 is no normal year. In the midst of the COVID pandemic, is it safe to take a dip in the pool? Stony Brook Medicine experts have what you need to know. Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, says pool safety requires a different mindset this year. Dr. Nachman shares why children and families should be able to enjoy swimming this summer season: The most important issue is not transmission of COVID-19 while swimming in a pool, but rather the time gathering around a pool. If people gather around too closely and in large groups, that is an added risk for transmission of this dangerous virus. A good rule of thumb is to stretch one’s arms out from your body. If someone is within that length of you sitting or standing around a pool, it’s too close. Take precaution and physically distance from each other. The risk of contracting COVID-19 from someone in a pool is small mainly because pools are chlorinated, which kills the virus. Plus, the volume of water dilutes the virus, therefore water splashing would not likely carry COVID-19 in a chlorinated pool. Saltwater pools are also safe, as saltwater kills the virus too. When it comes to public pools, follow these guidelines: If you are feeling sick or a child is not feeling well do not go to a public pool. Sit and hang around with your family members who you know do not have COVID-19. Do not gather closely with strangers. Pay attention to town and municipality rules. Some towns may limit the number of people who can be at the pool location or have certain

social distancing policies for reasons of safety. Dr. Nachman adds that safety against infections and disease is not just about COVID-19 and applies for any year. While contracting COVID-19 remains a threat in societal settings with large groups of people or those in close contact, she says please remember there are other infectious disease threats in summer pool settings. Outside food brought to a pool party: Food can get contaminated or spoil if left out in the heat or sun. Other viruses: Viruses including coxsackie (hand, foot and mouth disease) are typically seen in the summer months. Mosquitoes: Don’t discount the dangers of mosquitoes that feed at dusk. Families are advised to think about what they are wearing at dusk on a hot summer day. COVID-19 is not the only thing families should keep in mind as they hit the pool. According to the CDC, about ten people die from unintentional drowning each day. Of those, two are children aged 14 or younger. Kristi L. Ladowski, MPH, Injury Prevention & Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook Medicine Trauma Center has some overlooked pool dangers to watch out for at any age: Knowing how to swim does not mean someone is drown-proof. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

found that nearly 60% of children under 5 years old were not expected to be in or around the pool when they drowned. The presence of adults is not the same as someone actively supervising children in and around pools. Drowning is silent and can happen in seconds. When it’s time to swim, Ladowski says to designate a Water Watcher. It is common for a group of adults to be around, but no one is actively supervising the pool. Water Watchers should: Be one specific person at a time Only watch the pool; do not socialize, read, or use electronic devices Switch off with other adults for breaks, designate Water Watchers for shifts (such as 15 minutes) Have a cell phone nearby only for use in case of an emergency Stay sober Toddlers and children up to 4 years old are at the greatest risk of drowning both indoors and outdoors. It only takes an inch of water for a young child to drown. Here are a few extra tips for this age group: Use “touch supervision” in and around pools and bathtubs; always staying within arm’s reach If you need to leave the pool area or bathroom, take your toddler with you Empty all containers after use; buckets, wading pools, coolers with melted ice Remove all floats and toys from the pool so children are not tempted Prevent children from going outside unnoticed using locks and safety gates Make sure adults and older children know to always close doors so toddlers can’t get outside Lastly, Ladowski urges those spending time by the pool to remember the importance of learning CPR in case an emergency does arise.

walk down a long hallway. What you see now was the rector’s garage. As the St. Mark’s Thrift Shop became more well-known, it grew to approximately 3700-square-feet that includes floor space and a separate storage and work area. The area that was once the rector’s garage was given to the Thrift Shop when Father Simpson joined St. Mark’s in the early 2000s. It is now the main entrance, facing the driveway. Sales doubled, tripled and sometimes even quadrupled every ten years. All sales proceeds go to the church and its outreach programs. It is here that Father Simpson is quick to add that the store frequently gives away more than it sells. “Our Thrift Shop has ongoing outreach to those in need. We give items to the Boy Scouts; other churches, such as Christ Church in Brentwood, Big Brothers and Big Sisters; The Disabled American Vet and the DSS voucher program. It was the first open-air Thrift Shop at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway in Islip, held on July 25. The next open-air sale will be August 15. Until further notice, the thrift shop will be held outdoors, “until the Bishop says otherwise,” said St. Mark’s Rector, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson. Dear Neighbor, During these trying times, many people who are struggling have pet companions. Their owners may need help taking care of them and in an effort to continue to support these animals in need, I will be hosting my 8th Annual Pet Food Drive in conjunction with Long Island Cares. My office will be accepting donations of pet food and pet supplies through August 14, 2020. For many of us, pets are a treasured part of our family. This wonderful

event truly benefits those in our community – especially the elderly and homebound. During these tough economic times, many people need a little extra help to care for their beloved pets.
