The program identifies incarcerated individuals, and defendants who participate in court diversion pro-grams, who are in need of assistance with avoiding re-involvement with opioid use following release, providing them with education regarding treatment alternatives, and for patients expressing an interest, providing a referral for post-release treatment which includes on-going use of Vivitrol® as well as an ini-tial injection of

Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative The Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative was launched in September 2011 to promote the successful transition of incarcerated youth, between the ages of 16 to 21, from jail to community life and to reduce recidivism among this group. Participants in the program are housed on a separate tier within the facility dedicated to this program and are monitored by the same group of correction officers. The program encourages effective and open communication among the youth and the officers assigned to the initiative, and the officers act in a mentoring capacity with the young inmates. Suffolk County Wins National Awards Continued From 4 Operational Reporting System (RAPTORS) Suffolk County’s Arthropod-Borne Disease Laboratory (ABDL) conducts countywide arthropod-borne disease surveillance for West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV). The

surveillance program generates data that needs to be organized, analyzed and shared with several other Suffolk County offices. This information is necessary to evaluate the degree of human risk and to make decisions about mosquito control measures. The RAPTORS data management system can be utilized for new

or emerging arthropodborne pathogens such as Zika virus. Information Technology: PD Portal The Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) has primary responsibility to provide police service to the five western towns in Suffolk County; this includes

more than 571 square miles and a population of more than 1.35 million county residents. The new SCPD Portal is a feature-rich program that enhances the police users’ ability to access timely police-related intelligence. The SCPD Portal is a stand-alone program that accesses more than a dozen SCPD

databases in order to produce information that is automatically analyzed for trends and patterns and reported in a table format as well as on Google maps. Systematically measuring Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) In response to a strong desire to transform

Memoir in the Making As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was recently joined by other Town officials and local business leaders at the Brentwood Country Club for the Town of Islip Golf Expo. The Town of Islip Golf Expo is an event designed to showcase the beautiful 18-hole Brentwood County Club Golf Course, and the Town’s partnership

with Lessings Caterers, to members of the community looking to organize a future golf outing for their business, corporation or organization. “Our golf courses are the perfect venue to host outings for businesses and local community groups. CLEARING THE SHELTERS - The Islip Town Animal Shelter recently participated in a nationwide “Clear the Shelters” event, which was sponsored in part by NBC Universal. More than 30 animal shelters in the New York Tri-State area teamed up with hundreds of animal shelters across the country to find new homes for thousands of homeless pets. Participating shelters offered incentives such as no-cost or reduced fee adoptions to attract potential adoptees. The Islip Animal Shelter offered to waive the adoption fee for anyone wishing to adopt on that day. In all, fourteen dogs, one cat and one bird were adopted.

Previously known as the Miracle League of Long Island, the mission of the League of YES is to establish and sustain baseball programs for people of all ages with disabilities. The league

provides an opportunity for those individuals to experience the joy and benefits that come from playing the national pastime. After the TrebleMakers performed the National Anthem, many students remained in attendance to serve as “buddies” for the participants of the league. Buddies protect the players from thrown or batted balls, assist the players in batting and running the

bases, and offer friendship both on and off the field. “My students found that being a buddy was not only rewarding but also lots of fun,” said Baur. “All of the TrebleMakers agreed that this was truly a wonderful experience and encourage others to volunteer to be buddies.” For more information on the League of YES, visit www.leagueofyes.com.

The GRO1000 grant will help expand a newly renovated community vegetable garden to include 100 square feet for a children’s “Victory Garden,” a new pumpkin/ watermelon patch and a new berry bed with a bird bath. The flower beds surrounding the children’s garden have been filled with plants to attract pollinators. Keep Islip Clean, a certified affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful, is a not-for-profit, 501c3, community service organization. In addition to the children’s garden, other improvements include replanting an existing meadow bed as a 200 square foot pollinator garden. Ultimately, these special plants will be distributed to Project Bloom groups with the goal of establishing 30 more pollinator gardens. Informational signs installed in the gardens will educate the public about

the role these types of plants play in maintaining a healthy environment by supporting the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators. The last several years have seen an ambitious expansion of Project Bloom under the stewardship of Master Gardener Kathy VanDyke and her husband, Bob. With their knowledgeable direction, scores of volunteers have donated many hours to create a new landscape for the benefit of the public. “We were thrilled to receive the grant from Scotts to support our garden projects at Project Bloom,” said Kathy. “As a volunteer organization with very limited funding, this grant award will go a long way towards establishing new gardens and creating educational signs.” The public is invited to visit the gardens located on the Brookwood Hall property at 50 Irish Lane, East Islip.
