External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

SERENITY GARDENS TO CATER TO ALL ABILITIES - The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a much-anticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

The Town of Islip Parks Foundation broke ground on its first-ever Serenity Gardens, a muchanticipated inclusive “park within a park” that will cater to people with visual and hearing impairments; Alzheimer’s, or dementia, those on the autism spectrum; seniors; veterans, and all who enjoy the beauty of nature and the outdoors.

Located on the grounds of Brookwood Hall, Serenity Gardens will be a first-ofits-kind park in the Town, providing people of all abilities a way to enjoy nature, in an environment constructed for their individual needs.

“This, of course, would not have been possible without the dedicated members of the private nonprofit Parks Foundation of Islip Town, and our devoted community, whose donations ensure all $2 million of this garden park is entirely funded free of any burden to taxpayers,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “The formation of this Islip Parks Foundation has really been a dream come true for me, and something I was proud

to spearhead and make a priority,” said the Supervisor.

Once complete, Serenity Gardens will feature lush foliage and greenery to promote tranquility; fragrant plants and flowers; a garden with a braille system; a walking labyrinth made of stones; sensory walking paths with mulch, tactile pads, rubber and gravel; wind chimes, as well as a sensory wall.

Wide walking paths will surround the entire park and divide it into four quadrants. With the groundbreaking, the Town will begin the process of prepping for these individual components, the first being a large gazebo that will anchor each of the quadrants at the center.

“We must also thank our dedicated Parks and DPW Department, who have been working hard to prepare this Park for installation and will now be hard at work to make our dream for Serenity Gardens a soon-to-be-had reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter.

The Entenmann Family is sponsoring the Veterans/ Seniors quadrant and the Bohlsen Group is sponsoring the Autism/Developmentally Disabled quadrant.

Quadrant sponsors for the Alzheimer’s Disease/ Dementia quadrant or the Sight/Hearing Impaired quadrant are available. The Foundation is also seeking community feedback and input for Serenity Gardens.

Jr. Lifeguard Program Prepares Lifeguards Of Tomorrow

JR. LIFEGUARD PROGRAM PREPARES LIFEGUARDS OF TOMORROW -

Over a dozen students age 11 to 14 are learning vital water safety and life-saving lessons through the Town’s Junior Lifeguard Program. The program helps provide students with the necessary training to complete the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course offered to ages 15+, and will further them on the path to become one of our Town’s many dedicated Bay and Pool Lifeguards.

PSEG Long Island’s Summer Food Collection Initiative

PSEG Long Island and Island Harvest Food Bank are kicking off PSEG Long Island’s third annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive initiative.

Continuing through Sept. 22 – the last full day of summer – collection drives will be set up at six supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate nonperishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Islanders facing food insecurity.

Online donations are being accepted throughout the campaign at psegliny. com/feedli. Island Harvest estimates each dollar donated provides roughly two meals.

“We created PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island as a way to provide a

venue for people to help people. In the past two years, hundreds of Long Islanders have donated online and brought bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food to our collection sites to support the initiative,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Our goal this summer is to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals because there is still hunger in every ZIP code. PSEG Long Island is committed to playing an active role in improving the communities we serve. We are proud to partner with Island Harvest and our supermarket partners for the third year to help put food on the tables of families in our communities who need it.”

Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout

the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and other programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free or reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate continue to strain local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.

“Island Harvest Food Bank is grateful to our valued partners, PSEG Long Island, for hosting the third annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection event to help address the critical shortage of food through the summer months for people facing food insecurity,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “With school feeding programs halted for

the summer break, families already struggling to make ends meet are faced with additional challenges, and the support of PSEG Long Island, Stop & Shop, and the generosity of their customers will help ease that burden.”

Members of the public are encouraged to come to the collection sites and donate nonperishable food items. Collection bins and a drive-thru, drop-off option will be available at each location.

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and non-breast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:

Jeannie, age 68, from West Babylon; diagnosed in 1986.

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was lifealtering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

Tanya, age 55, from Wyandanch; diagnosed in 2020

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind of help to others. I do peer support for two women— linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Jeanne, age 51, from Elmont

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.

The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.
