Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. and State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will host a series of meetings in July and August to gather feedback from key stakeholders about the State’s current commercial fishing licensing system and ideas for reforms to modernize and improve the program. Assemblyman Thiele and Senator LaValle brought this issue into focus last year when, in the State Legislature, they blocked the DEC from continuing the current archaic commercial fishing licensing scheme for another three years. Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and Town Public Safety officials recently, to honor three Town employees for their quickthinking responses to residents who were in lifethreatening situations. In 2017, while enroute to an interview for the current position he holds, Joseph Cassano, a part-time dispatcher with the Town of Islip, jumped into action to aid a postal worker whose leg was injured when he was struck by a car while removing mail from the back of his truck. Dispatcher Cassano placed a tourniquet on the

postal worker’s leg, until EMS arrived and treated the injury. Most recently, in June 2018, Dispatcher Cassano stepped in to save an unresponsive gentleman who was locked in his vehicle, by breaking the window and

preforming CPR until EMS arrived at the scene. On June 30th, 2018 while on duty at Ronkonkoma Lake, Marina Guard Harry Torborg noticed an elderly woman who appeared

He immediately assisted the woman to a bench, offered her water, and notified Marina Guard Supervisor John Hons. The two asked the woman where she was heading, to which she replied, ‘home to Hempstead.’ The guards immediately notified Suffolk County Police, and contacted a local assisted living facility where the woman had been residing. She was treated at the hospital, released and is living in a long-term care facility. “I am proud to say that here in the Town of Islip, we are fortunate to have the finest employees,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Their untiring efforts in ensuring the well-being of others, is demonstrated daily through their humility and compassion to those they have sworn to protect,” added the Supervisor.

Metamorphosis

We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board recently, to recognize the efforts of the Animal Lover’s League of Locust Valley, who together with James Heil, Commissioner, Town of Islip Department of Environmental Control, launched a Trap-NeuterReturn program in Islip, to humanely reduce the community cat population. Eighteen volunteers in total attended the July Town Board meeting, to receive Certificates of Recognition for their service to the

Islip community. Since launching in April, the TNR program has successfully spayed and neutered nearly 800 community cats, made possible through the tireless efforts of these volunteers. Tr a p - N e u t e r- R e t u r n clinics are held twice a

Plans include 30 water features as well as its own filtration system, separate from the main swimming pool. Assemblyman Phil Ramos secured $2 million in state funding for the spray park, through the State and Municipal Facilities Program administered by the Dormitory Authority of New York State. “We are pleased to begin construction on this stateof-the-art spray park. It will bring another level of fun to Roberto Clemente Park, which children of all ages and abilities can enjoy. We are grateful to Assemblyman Phil Ramos for securing the $2M in state funding for the spray park,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I am happy to see construction begin on what will be an outstanding recreational outlet for the young people of our community, said Assemblyman Phil Ramos “Today we are seeing the results of what happens when we cross partisan and jurisdictional lines and just focus our families and children. Due to the joint effort with Supervisor Carpenter we can finally begin to bring back summer for our families and children.”

The Town of Islip will use its own resources for the demolition, including a 25 ton excavator with a hydraulic jackhammer, in an effort to save taxpayer dollars and reduce the total cost of the project. The machinery will be used to break up concrete in preparation for construction, and will excavate approximately 50,000 lbs of soil.

Film Challenge write, shoot, edit and score a movie in just 10 school days. After picking a theme out of a hat, the students had to use an exact line of dialogue in the film, use a specific prop and camera angle, and include the main character’s name and given background story. They also were required to create a screenplay and movie poster. The students could only work on their film during class and school hours, with no work allowed after school, at night, on weekends or at home. The top 30 films, including Islip’s “Stuck in Bayside,” were shown on

the big screen in front of peers, other schools, and judges at the 10 Day School Film Challenge awards held in Astoria, Queens. “Congratulations once again to our amazing Islip students,” said teacher Mike Reilly. “This was the second year that Nancy, Selia and Lauryn were selected for this honor. All three students will be attending college this fall and plan on concentrating their studies in the area of film and media communications. We hope to see them all on the real red carpet one day.”

Based on the theme of “A Film Within a Film,” theme, students Ryan DelGenio, Selia Mercado, Nancy Pramanand, James Rindos and Lauryn Valdez created the short film “Stuck in Bayside,” which advanced to the state finals. The state competition drew hundreds of film entries submitted by dozens of high schools. Competition rules required participants to

Poster Contest Winner East Islip first-graders at Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools recently participated in the Suffolk County “Be Pool Smart” poster contest in the form of an art lesson, with Connetquot student Anna Humann earning the top prize. The intention of the contest was to showcase

ways to be safe while swimming in the pool this summer. The students brainstormed safety concepts, then came up with ideas of what they could draw and how they could design their posters. Each student drew two practice sketches, deciding what to draw and showcase, how to color, and which colors to use,

then chose their best idea for the final version. Each Suffolk County legislative district chose one contender from their submissions, and a final judging of those posters by the Suffolk County Legislature’s budget review office selected Humann as the overall winner. Her design will become the cover

of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” countywide safety brochure. Accompanied by her parents, sister, grandmother and art teacher Christina Spera, Humann was presented with a proclamation by Legislator Tom Cilmi. “This is such an accomplishment for Anna to have her design
