Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be

rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore

than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one.

Hitting the Trees To celebrate the accomplishments of the East Islip Middle School Leaders Club for the latest school year, 45 club members recently traveled to the Adventure Park at Long Island in Wheatley Heights to challenge their bodies and minds on the obstacle courses in the trees. This year’s Leader Club group was the first to attempt this field trip, according to adviser Diane Wahrenburg, who said, “I was a bit nervous and wasn’t sure what to expect,

but I knew these students would step up to the plate and challenge themselves, which is exactly what they did.” Prior to climbing on at least three courses each, the club members were instructed on how to use their harnesses and clips properly so they would be attached to the safety cable for each course at all times. The courses were color coded and progressed from lower, easier courses, to higher and more difficult courses. Club members mustered their courage

to jump off platforms, test their balance and strength, and zip line through the trees. Mental toughness was also a definite requirement. “With the encouragement and help of their friends, some of our club members completed courses they did not think they could handle and pleasantly surprised themselves by pushing out of their comfort zones,” said Wahrenburg. “At the end of the day, everyone was happy, tired and feeling accomplished.”

It Takes a District Islip High School began a new tradition this June, gathering together Class of 2016 valedictorian Amber Yildizel and salutatorian Brian Lithen with all of the pair’s many former teachers – including elementary and middle school – to celebrate their achievement and the long, hard work that goes into helping mold successful students and allow them to reach their potential. The event, held on the afternoon of commencement, was capped with a joyful group photo at the high school’s athletic field bleachers. The idea was sparked by a conversation between

the high school’s principal, Michael Mosca, and his counterpart at the district’s Wing Elementary School, Dr. Christopher Smalley. “We were marveling about the number of teachers and administrators, from kindergarten through senior year, that have the opportunity to have an impact on the success of Islip’s students,” said Mosca. “Dr. Smalley suggested memorializing this great feat by having our valedictorian and salutatorian pose for a picture with all of the teachers and administrators who have

played a role in their lives. “Thank you so much for making these last 13 years so wonderful,” said Yildizel to her many proud educators. “When I think all the way back to kindergarten, I have nothing but positive memories of my teachers and classes. You all had a part in shaping me and helping me get here, and I don’t know if I can ever thank you enough for always being there, being good teachers, and also being good people and willing to help me and other students outside of class.”

The Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts of America, Inc., Trailblazer District, will be honoring Raymond Fell, a longtime resident of Bellport, New

York and current Mayor of Bellport. Mayor Fell has been selected as this year’s Good Deed honoree. He has altruistically supported

numerous projects and organizations in the community, which includes Boy Scouting among others. Raymond Fell has made outstanding contributions to his community and has been a mentor to numerous youth throughout his years spent working in the field of education. Undersheriff Steve Kuehhas was sworn in today during a ceremony at the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office in Riverhead. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, along with family, friends and colleagues attended the event. Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pascale administered the oath of office. During the ceremony, DeMarco welcomed the new Undersheriff and said the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is fortunate to have Kuehhas onboard.

She praised Kuehhas for his commitment to law enforcement and added, “The Suffolk County Correctional Facility is

Seeking Volunteers YES Community Counseling Center is seeking golf enthusiasts and community-minded individuals to volunteer at the upcoming Barclays golf event, which will be conducted at the Bethpage Golf Course from August 23rd through 28th, 2016. YES will be responsible for providing 35 volunteers each day at the 12th Green concession booth. For

every shift you volunteer to work, you receive a pass to watch the tournament on that same day. Event updates will be posted on their Facebook page. More than 400 motorcycles with their riders and passengers - adding up to over 600 participants - took off from Stony Brook University Cancer Center on Sunday, July 17th for the 10th annual Sticky Finger Motorcycle Run. This event helped to raise over $20,000, of which will support breast cancer services and programs at Stony Brook, adding to the upwards of $180,000 raised by past runs. Hosted by 102.3 FM WBAB Fingers and the Great South Bay Music Festival, the event kicked

off with live rock ‘n’ roll with classic rock band, “TRAINWRECK.” Food trucks and vendors were on site at the Cancer Center and participants enjoyed free giveaways. Then everyone hit the road and headed south to the Great South Bay Music Festival held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
