Walis Builds Bandsawn Box

THINKING OF BUYING OR SELLING?

Islip High School junior and second-year shop student Brian Walis recently wowed his teacher, Jesse Eilbeck, with a special bandsawn project. Walis built a beautiful owl box, using walnut and white pine for the body section. He then reversed the woods for the belly and face mask sections when cutting them out. Walis used a technique called plug cutting to reproduce the eye sections, working with the exotic hardwoods yellowheart and black ebony. The pull for the belly drawer and the wings were constructed out of African bloodwood. “Brian has amazing talent,” said Eilbeck. “He gave the owl to his mother, as he told me that it reminded of the works his maternal grandfather was noted for building.”

work toward world peace and to leave this Earth better than it was when you came to be.” James Smalley, the salutatorian, then reflected on his journey as a student at East Islip High School and how the experiences they shared as classmates shaped them into kind, compassionate individuals. Bernard then honored a group of alumni from the Class of 1969 who were in attendance, and Kristen Bayreuther recognized the top 25 students in the senior class. Valedictorian Victoria Keenan’s words empowered her fellow graduates as they move on from this chapter in their lives. “Promise me that you will believe in yourself, even when others do not,” she said. “People are beautiful and wonderful, but they also have the power to be cruel. They can say things and do things that will make you feel powerless, that you are not good enough; but let me tell you this – you are enough. If there is one thing you will take

away from high school, let it be that.” Superintendent John Dolan wished the graduates well as he addressed them with powerful words of encouragement. “Now it is your time to go out into the world, to continue to make good, healthy choices and continue to help the ongoing evolution of our beautiful world,” he said. “Choose a career path where you are excited to go to work every day, where you are excited to work hard, to make those around you and the world a better place.” Following the presentation of diplomas, Class President Madison Lane delivered a nostalgic farewell address that took the new graduates on a final look back through their time as East Islip students. Just as the sun began to fade from view, the graduates exited the field with hopeful enthusiasm as they began the next chapter of their lives as alumni of East Islip High School.

Clear skies and a beaming sun welcomed a joyous crowd of family, friends and distinguished guests to East Islip High School’s 92nd commencement ceremony on June 26, to celebrate the Class of 2019 and the momentous milestone they have achieved. The event began with the seniors filing onto the football field, adorned in red caps and gowns, before Isabella Pasha and Maggie Ruland recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Victoria Tiernan performed the national anthem. In traditional fashion, four students – Alexandra Bertolini, Emily DaSilva, Karina Gallagher and Katelyn Spina – then sang the school’s alma mater. Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way.
