Islip food drive to send all donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are nonsectarian; you do not need to be a parishioner or an Episcopalian to donate. In fact, many conduct little food drives by approaching neighbors, friends and family--then bring it all to us on the day of the food drive. We, in turn, send it to God’s Provisions. Some suggested items include: pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/ brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not

Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources to God’s Provisions, adding that “They also obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase.” God’s Provisions gets additional support from churches, local stores and community sources. “This support helped pull us through the early months of Covid when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one

Before his untimely death in 1981, singer-songwriter and philanthropist Harry Chapin established Long Island Cares, a food bank dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry population. That said, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, New York, will hold a driveby food drop on Saturday, July 24 from 9 AM to 1PM. The food drop, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the church doors, will send all donations to God’s Provisions, a Long Island Cares affiliate. Volunteers will be available to take donations, should anyone wish not to get out of his/her car. There will even be a special musician presentation by the Cursillo players. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church

Islip High School’s Clash of the Classes, a schoolwide competition of skits, games and athletic challenges, was held on June 11. Members of the Student Union – led by officers Vanessa Alvarenga, Yenifer Fernandez, Scarlett Garcia, Sophie Sabatino and Briana Wood – and the Principles of Leadership class collaborated to create an exciting event

that included an obstacle course, water balloon toss and a “teacher edition” of musical chairs. Gradelevel advisers worked for weeks with their classes to showcase Islip’s talented students in decade-themed skits. The Clash of Clashes began with Tyler Cirulnick singing a beautiful rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner,” and

the day ended with a nostalgic song from the seniors, “We’re All in This Together,” and the final round of a rock-paperscissors tournament. “It was incredible to see all of our students smiling, laughing and cheering together for the first time in over a year,” said Student Union adviser Meghan Stern.

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has

recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing donor chairs at least six feet

apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary,

reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such

as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

CONZO SIGNS WITH ROWAN UNIVERSITY - East Islip High School Class of 2021 graduate Jason Conzo recently signed a national letter of intent to join the track team at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey this fall. He plans to major in accounting. Conzo, a pole vaulter, earned numerous accolades during his time in East Islip, including All-League in both winter track and cross-country and the Carey Award in cross-country. He was a state qualifier three times, and finished second in divisional competition and third in the county, tying a school record.
