Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Install fencing with self-closing gates at least 4 feet high to separate the pool from house and yard.[8] • Teach Safety. Talk about risky behavior such as diving or swimming in unfamiliar water, and alcohol or drug use while in or near water. • Clear Out Pool Toys. Make sure children aren’t tempted to play unsupervised.

Extreme heat[1] may increase incidents of cardiac arrest and an average of 33 drownings occur in the U.S. each day, onethird of which are fatal.[2] Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR could be the key to saving someone from cardiac arrest or drowning. CPR, especially if performed immediately, could double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.[3] The American Heart Association is reminding people about the importance of staying safe and prepared this summer. Each year, more than 350,000 outof-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA)[4] occur in the United States and fewer than half of these people receive the immediate help that they

With this grant, we won’t have to lose techniques we now heavily rely on, but instead will be able to incorporate these tools to create even more memorable multi-sensory moments together.” The Long Island Museum is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities. Located in Stony Brook, they have numerous exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and educational programs for adults and children. The Long Island Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Affiliate. The $6,000 grant will support the Museum’s “In the Moment” program. Created in 2011, this innovative program takes individuals living with dementia and their care partners on guided tours of the museum’s collection of art, historical objects, and seasonal exhibits. Additionally, the program offers hands-on art workshops which afford opportunities for creative expression, with all needed materials provided for free.

All programs are led by museum educators and designed to be engaging and cognitively stimulating. Programming is currently offered virtually through Zoom and as a hybrid, inperson/virtual option. Since its inception, the program served more than 3,200 individuals, according to the Museum. In April 2022, the Museum hosted its first hybrid In the Moment program with the Making Memories at the Movies event. Participants gathered in the museum’s event space to see clips of films accompanied by facilitated discussions by licensed master social worker Marcy Rhodes, to help prompt memories and spark conversation. Participants also joined Zoom from home, assisted living and senior facilities to partake in this wonderful program. AFA is able to provide vital services, like this grant, through the generosity of individual contributions, sponsorships and fundraising activities. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has awarded grant funding to the Long Island Museum to support “In the Moment,” a free program which designed to creatively engage those living with dementia-related illnesses and their care partners. “Art can be a powerful tool to enhance quality of life for individuals living with a dementia-related illness and their caregivers. It stimulates the mind and creates opportunities for self-expression and socialization,” said Charles J. The Head Injury Association also offers support and services to help navigate the eligibility process and throughout the application phase to assist in accessing supports and services offered through Head Injury Association. It also offers employment services, with Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) to achieve and maintain employment, and to support independent living through training, education, rehabilitation and career development. Another Kinexion afﬁliate organization is the Center for Developmental Disabilities, located in Woodbury. “We help children and adults overcome

barriers to living, working, learning and enjoying recreational opportunities in the community of their choice,” says Jay Silverstein, Ph.D., Executive Director of The Center. “We are dedicated to the achievement of excellence and innovation within a community based upon respect, kindness and open communication.” The center offers a variety of diverse programs include a Children’s Day Program, which operates 12 months a year and serving children ages 5-21 who have an educational classiﬁcation of Autism, Intellectual Disability or Multiple Disabilities. The classroom curriculum covers academic subjects such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, while also fostering the development of each student’s daily living skills and social skills. Computer and technology education are a part of each classroom’s weekly schedule. The Center also launched the “Support with Dignity” initiative to enhance opportunities for individuals to live with greater independence within their communities. This initiative embraces three pillars: Respectful Interactions, Promoting Independence and fostering Purposeful, Person-Centered Activities. Through a collective commitment to best practices in the ﬁeld, the Center will advance the hopes and dreams of the individuals it serves. Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.
