The New York Marine Rescue Center is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 2023 Paddle Battle LI Event on Saturday, July 29th along the Peconic River in Riverhead, NY. It’s a race to save the Sea Turtles! This family friendly event includes a 2.5-mile amateur race and a 5-mile competitive race course. First place medals will be offered to winners in each category, for each class and distance. We also have our Casual Paddle! This is not a race it’s just a great way for family and friends to get together and paddle casually on the beautiful Peconic River!

There is also a great opportunity for companies, organizations and unions to participate in the “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.” This 2.5 mile stand up paddle board and kayak race

designed for teams of four competitors to compete against one another for the Team Challenge trophy. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the bragging rights of winning the 2023 “Paddle Battle Team Challenge.”

All proceeds will go directly to the NY Marine Rescue Center, a not-forprofit 501c3 to help them save the Sea Turtles!

Registration starts at 7:30am on the Peconic Waterfront – Entry fees are $95/pp before the race day, or $105 on the event day. Rental canoes and kayaks are available for $40. Viola Player Hailey Messina Wins LISFA Scholarship

East Islip viola player Hailey Messina recently won the Long Island String Festival Association LISFA scholarship for a private study grant.

“It is incredible to have been awarded this scholarship,” said Messina, who recently graduated from East Islip Middle School and will be a freshman in East Islip High School this fall. “I look forward to being able to participate in future LISFA festivals throughout my school career and am truly honored to be this year’s eighth grade recipient.”

“Hailey is such a hardworking and dedicated member of the eighth grade orchestra and is thoroughly deserving of this grant to help her further pursue her passion,” teacher Katelyn Odierna said. “It has been a pleasure watching Hailey develop this passion for music.”

“It has been an absolutely pleasure teaching Hailey these past two years,” teacher Juliette Incandela said. “Her maturity, drive and natural curiosity for

music has grown so much and I’m proud of her progress. I’m happy she has been recognized by LISFA for her hard work and dedication to music.”

A dozen PSEG Long Island employee, including interim President and COO David Lyons, recently cheered on athletes at the Nassau County Games for the Physically Challenged. The games, which were held in Garden City on June 2 and 3, give physically challenged athletes ages 5-21 the opportunity to compete in competitive sports and recreational activities adapted to their abilities.

PSEG Long Island has been a proud bronze medal sponsor of the games for the last two years.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player coed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine.

Tech Students Complete Yearlong Home Improvement Project

During the course of the 2022-2023 school year, students in Jesse Eilbeck’s technology class at Islip High School completed an impressive full-year construction project in home improvement. The course was divided into two sections. The academic portion covered hand drawing, estimating, presentations of student ideas on reconfiguration of spaces, measurement, material costs, contractors and specialists, and

residential construction codes.

The second section featured a building area encompassing the most basic forms of hands-on construction that can be simulated on a small scale in the form of a small wall unit. Topics included rough framing; basic plumbing including waste lines, hot and cold feed lines, and proper venting for water flow; rough electrical; insulation and drywall; and tape and spackle.

“The objective of the course was to give a comprehensive understanding of how to improve your living area,” Eilbeck said. “Many times, people have interesting ideas but pay others to implement them. Other people take on improvement projects in their homes to save money. Whatever the motivations, setting reasonable goals and building on those ideas are important in this course.”
