AARP Forever Young Virtual Exhibition Opens Islip Arts and AARP Long Island are pleased to announce the Opening of a new statewide virtual art exhibition embracing the theme Forever Young, curated by Holly Gordon and directed by Waldo Cabrera. As part of AARP’s effort to disrupt aging by dispelling negative

Before his untimely death in 1981, singer-songwriter and philanthropist Harry Chapin established Long Island Cares, a food bank dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry population. That said, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, New York, will hold a driveby food drop on Saturday, July 24 from 9 AM to 1PM. The food drop, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the church doors, will send all donations to God’s Provisions, a Long Island Cares affiliate. Volunteers will be available to take donations, should anyone wish not to get out of his/her car. There will even be a special musician presentation by the Cursillo players. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources to God’s Provisions, adding that “They also obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase.” God’s Provisions gets additional support from churches, local stores and community sources. “This support helped pull us through the early months of Covid when the
food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are nonsectarian; you do not need to be a parishioner or an Episcopalian to donate. In fact, many conduct little food drives by approaching neighbors, friends and family--then bring it all to us on the day of the food drive. We, in turn, send it to God’s Provisions. Some suggested items include: pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/ brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed, not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables
and fruit, kid-friendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil-even chocolate can be iffy because if it’s hot, it can melt. A Show Of Strength And Leadership When hundreds of Islip High School seniors made their way out onto the school’s athletic field on June 25 to receive their diplomas, they entered as eager graduates, but little did they know that when they left as alumni, they would be even more eager to see where the world would take them after graduation. For some, as Principal Jon LaRochester mentioned, that’s college, the workforce and even the armed forces. However, regardless of where their paths take them in the future, he advised
each of the graduates to look back fondly on the past four years, more specifically the last year and a half, as they were by far the most challenging but brought with them the greatest reward. He spoke of the life lessons that each of the graduates learned over the course of the global pandemic, noting that because of that, it gave each of the graduates, as well as their teachers, a greater appreciation for the little things in life. Little things like friendships that survived
and flourished via live video chat, virtual ceremonies that were albeit different, but nonetheless heartwarming and fulfilling. Little things like “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sung by graduate Tyler Cirulnik to kick off the high school’s 96th annual commencement ceremony. The applause that awaited Cirulnik’s performance, was only matched by that of the applause that greeted valedictorian Lauren Callaway and salutatorian Jessica Chan as they concluded their speeches. Both spoke of
the unwavering strength shown not only by each of the graduates, but also of the entire district, including teachers, staff and administrators, during a less-than-traditional year. “The pandemic forced us to take our education into our own hands,” Callaway said. “Not only that, but we’ve learned a lot about ourselves in the past four years. We were forced to make decisions on how to stay true to ourselves during an unprecedented situation. For all of these reasons and more, I am very
proud of our class for being able to be leaders during an uncertain time.” Chan echoed those sentiments, but also offered a bit of wisdom. “I stopped letting the anticipation of what comes next define what happens now, and I urge you all to do the same because the anticipation of what comes next is not worth losing this very moment too,” she said. Following Chan’s speech, Superintendent Ellen Semel addressed the Class of 2021 and offered words of advice for the future. Quoting
Albert Einstein, she told each of the graduates that the most important thing is to “never stop questioning.” “Curiosity opens you to possibilities,” Dr. Semel said. “Look at the world through the eyes of a young child, a scientist, an artist, and you will see different things. Change your perspective. Question everything.” With that, each of the graduates made their way across the stage to receive their diplomas and officially graduate from Islip High School.
