lineman for the varsity Bucs football team in his junior and senior years as well as a five-year member of Islip’s varsity bowling team and a two-year member of the varsity tennis squad.

For Islip second graders in Cheryl Brown’s class at Commack Road Elementary School, the Authors Tea on May 31 served as a special celebration for the students to showcase a year’s worth of writing and demonstrate their growth as writers. Pieces included biographies, personal narratives, how-to books, poetry, animal reports and writing connected to social emotional learning, which were read to visiting parents and administrators including Superintendent Ellen Semel and Principal James Cameron. “I began each lesson with a mini lesson and then set the children free to express themselves,” said Brown. “As all the attendees saw, they worked very hard.”

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Celebrating Accomplishments Fifth graders at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools took the next step in their educational careers in preparing for middle school, celebrating at two memorable moving up ceremonies, held at the high school’s auditorium on June 19 for RCK and June 20 for JFK. Hundreds of parents and family members were on hand to cheer as the students received congratulations as well as numerous academic and other awards. “The moving up

event represents the end of the children’s elementary education and the beginning of their secondary education,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “It was a joyous day of celebration and accomplishment of the final year at JFK. We wish the children a fabulous summer and best of luck in East Islip Middle School, where we know they will continue to shine.” “Over the past year here at RCK, I had the privilege of getting to know these

fine young boys and girls,” said Principal Janet Jones. “They are an enthusiastic and inquisitive group of young minds, who I am sure will thrive in the middle school. I know they will take with them the virtues and character education that has been instilled in them here at RCK to help them grow to become productive members of society. On behalf of the entire RCK family, we wish them the best of luck in the years to come.”

Theater Students Earn Nominations

East Islip High School theater students garnered a record 16 nominations in multiple categories for this year’s productions of “Lend Me a Tenor” and “Miss Saigon” – and swept every single category in the drama/comedy division – at the Islip Arts Council’s annual Teeny Awards ceremony, held on June 2 at Bay Shore High School. The event marked the 11th year of the Teeny Awards, a theater recognition program for high school

students modeled after Broadway’s famous Tony Awards. Karina Gallagher won Best Actress, Andrew Timmins won Best Actor, Alex Bertolini won Best Supporting Actress, Luke Ferrari won Best Supporting Actor, Katie Spina won for Featured Actress and Connor Barnes won for Featured Actor. In addition, the entire cast of “Lend Me a Tenor” won Best Ensemble. The pit orchestra of

“Miss Saigon” earned a Teeny Award for their high-caliber playing, Emily DaSilva and Tori Tiernan were selected for Director’s Choice awards, and Tori Tiernan earned an Islip Arts Council scholarship. “It was an incredible honor for East Islip to receive so many nominations and awards, and we are so proud of all of our talented theater students,” said Bethany Affelt, the high school’s choral and theater director.

Reconnecting With Former Teachers For the fourth consecutive year, Islip High School hosted a special reception on June 25 for the valedictorian and salutatorian, providing a chance for both students – Class of 2019 valedictorian Victoria Arthus and salutatorian Matthew Southard – to reconnect with all of their former high school, middle school and elementary school teachers. “We are here to congratulate these seniors, our valedictorian

and salutatorian,” said Superintendent Ellen Semel to the assembled educators. “But so many of you have had a hand in helping shape their lives, and I want to thank you all for this. We so seldom realize the power we have as educators, and this is one of those times you get to see it in living color.” Turning to the two seniors, Semel told them, “I congratulate you for your leadership, your perseverance, your
