onnetquot Elementary School’s moving up ceremony was held in the school’s cafeteria, providing a chance for the 74 graduating students to shine one last time as fifth graders before their new academic life as middle schoolers begins in the fall. After the processional, set to Edward Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance, the national anthem was sung by the assembled students and then the colors were presented.

This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty? Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no. I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the
so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no? No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days? Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”
Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no? I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th. The last five rendezvous in Greenport were so successful; the squadrons are back again. With Greenport’s long maritime heritage dating back to the 1600’s, what a great place for a gathering of Long Island boaters. While each local squadron schedules their own events, Rendezvous East brings together boaters from all District 3 squadrons across Long Island for the summer’s biggest boating celebration. District Commander Barry Rush, SN will welcome boats to Mitchell Marina and possibly into several other local marinas. Many other squadron members will be arriving by land. Festivities begin with a Commander’s cocktail party on Friday evening. They continue on Saturday with breakfast, a flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m., a pot luck lunch and then, a night time

July 4th has historically been a day of extreme patriotism. This pride in our nation is brought about by the realization that we are actually free. We live in such a great place that emphasizes our ability to choose! The right to make ourselves happy is undoubtably taken for granted, but on the Fourth of July, we display our thanks. This year, on the fourth, my cousins and I realized OUR freedom. On this Independence Day, we did what made us happy, not our parents. We were truly free. We were able to break away from the monotonous family functions and enjoy the sand, the sea and the sun. Our small group traded in the traditional family barbecue for a “doublecheeseburger pizza”, in
what we consider to be a budding tradition. The seven of us got ice cream afterwards as well. The day wouldn’t have been complete without every single one of us getting ridiculously sunburnt and buying all of the aloe on Fire Island. 237 years ago, our founding fathers wanted to create a place where people could do what they wanted in an effort to make themselves happy. All of America’s troops and fallen heroes gave their lives for the hope that we could forever have our rights. They wanted to enable people to create an environment where people could enjoy their freedom. We did just that! A day filled with beach volleyball and family gave way to a night of fireworks and fun. We enjoyed the company of
each other, and didn’t go to sleep until the morning of July 5th! After months of structured schooling, the slack to do whatever we wanted was welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the fourth, we weren’t forced to study or to work; we were free to do whatever we desired. On that day, we were able to enjoy life to its fullest. We were able to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the company of family. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the sacrifice of our soldiers and the flying of our colors. Enjoy your country, it is the greatest in the world because of the freedom available to us. Isn’t that what the Fourth of July is all about?

Lieutenant Commander Tom Croci this week was promoted to the rank of Commander in the United States Naval Reserves in a small ceremony among family, friends and the U.S. Navy Sea Cadets. The promotion comes as Croci, Islip Town Supervisor since January 2012, prepares to
be mobilized to active duty in mid-July. U.S. Naval Commander Michael O’Hara swore Croci into his new post in front of the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville. Present at the ceremony were Dan, Maureen and John Murphy, parents and brother of
U.S. Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy who was killed in action in 2005 and was the recipient of the U.S. Congressional Medial of Honor. Croci first entered naval service in 1999 and joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 2007.
DUCKS PERFORMANCE - Timber Point Elementary School celebrated Family Night on May 11th, attending a Long Island Ducks baseball game at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that registration is now open for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Summer Day Camp, which is being held in cooperation with Dowling College for the second year in a row. The camp will run from July 22nd to July 26th at Dowling College, located at 150 Idle Hour Boulevard in Oakdale. This summer camp is designed for children ages 9-18 and is meant to inspire Long Island students to become interested in science, technology, engineering and math. There will be beginner and advanced levels for FIRST LEGO League (FLL) campers, as well as sessions for high school robotics campers. Each FLL level will be divided into teams who will build and program robots to perform tasks. On Friday, July 26th, parents and friends will be welcome to attend a demonstration of what their children had learned as the campers program their robots to execute certain tasks. High school students will learn all of the systems that comprise a large 120-pound
robot and will actually program and work on existing robots. This camp is designed for incoming freshmen, sophomores and students at all levels who haven’t played an active technical role on a high school robotics team. The day camp will run each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers should arrive at 8:45 a.m. Children who are dropped off earlier will be brought to a supervised location, but such transportation plans must be made in advance. Registration is available online at camp.sbplilifirst.org for $465. (All online registrations will be confirmed via email.) Those who wish to register via mail will receive a $15 discount, at a reduced price of $450. Checks can be made payable to SBPLI, Inc. and mailed to: J. Anderson, 155 Hidden Pond Circle, Smithtown, NY 11787. The registration fee covers everything except lunch. Campers should bring their lunches each day. An EJ Autism Foundation grant recently provided special education teacher Crystal Ann Chiari with a new listening center in her classroom at Connetquot Elementary School. The donation, one of six grants during the 2013-2014 school year from EJ Autism to district teachers, was part of EJ Autism’s continuing efforts to support East Islip’s schools and special needs programs across Long Island that work with children diagnosed with
autism. With the listening center, Chiari’s students are able to listen to a story and answer simple comprehension questions or complete listening activities. The latter aid the students by improving their attention skills, giving them simple directives such as finding a picture and coloring it a certain color, or finding a picture, listening to the given word and writing the word below the correct picture. “In the type of classroom

Spring Concerts Impress
Showcasing some of the finest musicianship the East Islip School District has to offer, East Islip School District’s two spring concerts for 2013 served as a strong reminder of just how impressive the school’s music program continues to be. Held on May 1st, the first concert kicked off with East Islip’s concert band, directed by Christopher Neske. The ensemble performed “The Sinfonians” by Clifton Williams, Antonin Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and the “Harry Potter Symphonic Suite” by John Williams. Up next was the women’s choir, under the direction of Bethany Affelt and accompanied by pianist Elena Blyskal. The singers began with Giovanni Gastoldi’s “Sonatemi un balleto,” leading into “Stars I Shall Find,” a Sara Teasdale poem set to music by Audrey Snyder, and a medley of tunes from classic French musical “Les Misérables” arranged by Ed Lojeski. The concert choir, also directed by Affelt and accompanied by Blyskal, performed 17th-century Spanish poet Felix Lope de Vega’s “Vamos a la Playa” arranged by Dave and Jean Perry, followed by “Hamabe no Uta (Song of the Beach),” a traditional-
sounding Japanese song arranged by John Higgins, and a medley of Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys compositions arranged by Lojeski. Jack Newman and Vincent Sheppard were featured guests on percussion. Closing the first night, the school’s string orchestra and director Alyssa Sciarrino tackled two popular film scores, “The Avengers” by Alan Silvestri and “The Incredibles” by Michael Giacchino, before performing Ralph Herman’s arrangement of “Londonderry Air” and Elliott del Borgo’s “Ancient Ritual.” The second concert in the series was held on May 22. The East Islip High School Honors Symphony Orchestra, directed by Susan Rydzeski and led by concertmaster and violinist Jessica Willdigg, began with a stirring rendition of Gioachino Rossini’s overture from “The Barber of Seville.” Next was the first movement of the “Spring” concerto from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” performed by the Symphony Strings: violinists Elaina Lorefice, Michael Massina and Willdigg; cellist William Meehan; and double bass player Holly Alper. This was followed by a spooky “March to the Scaffold” from Berlioz’s “Symphonie
Fantastique” and selections from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” score. The Affelt-directed honors choir’s varied repertoire started with upbeat Cuban folk song “Son de Camaguey,” arranged by Stephen Hatfield, which was accompanied by Blyskal, Neske, and percussionists Newman and Sheppard. The choir’s next pieces were a lush, lyrical setting of the Teasdale poem “I Am Not Yours,” with music by Z. Randall Stroope, and Hungarian composer Gyorgy Orban’s “Daemon Irrepit Callidus.” The singers’ final two selections were performed consecutively with no break. Affelt’s SATB arrangement of Phillip Phillips’ “Home” led into Fun’s pop song “Some Nights.” Neske and the guest percussionists invigorated the song with a rousing, marching-band style accompaniment, bringing the audience to their feet. Directed by Neske, the East Islip High School Wind Ensemble concluded both the evening and the school’s spring concert series with vibrant performances of John Mackey’s “Xerxes,” Morten Lauridsen’s “O Magnum Mysterium” and Frank Ticheli’s “Angels in the Architecture.”
