AARP Forever Young Virtual Exhibition Opens Islip Arts and AARP Long Island are pleased to announce the Opening of a new statewide virtual art exhibition embracing the theme Forever Young, curated by Holly Gordon and directed by Waldo Cabrera. As part of AARP’s effort to disrupt aging by dispelling negative

stereotypes and bias toward aging, this exhibit asked New Yorkbased artists 50 and older to submit pieces that symbolize their vision and ideas on staying Forever Young. Selected artists are featured in a virtual exhibition sponsored by AARP and will be shown on the

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience definitely understands that! The classes that this nonprofit offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonprofit Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Islip food drive to send all donations to God’s Provisions, an afﬁliate of Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank Before his untimely death in 1981, singer-songwriter and philanthropist Harry Chapin established Long Island Cares, a food bank dedicated to serving Long Island’s hungry population. That said, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, New York, will hold a driveby food drop on Saturday, July 24 from 9 AM to 1PM. The food drop, which will be held on the sidewalk in front of the church doors, will send all donations to God’s Provisions, a Long Island Cares affiliate. Volunteers

will be available to take donations, should anyone wish not to get out of his/her car. There will even be a special musician presentation by the Cursillo players. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources to God’s Provisions, adding that “They also obtained a grant for us to do direct food

purchase.” God’s Provisions gets additional support from churches, local stores and community sources. “This support helped pull us through the early months of Covid when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which brought in 24,000 donations and enabled us to continue.” Food insecurity is a serious matter, said one organizer, and we also try to keep the food drops light enough to draw people in, adding that last December even Santa showed up to help sort. “The ultimate goal, after all, is to feed the hungry, so you want people to come,” she said. The food drives are

Grand Opening Of The Islip Arts Council New Gallery Space

Suffolk County Majority Leader Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) recently joined the Islip Arts Council to celebrate the Grand Opening of its gallery at the Westfield South Shore Mall in Bay Shore! At the event, members and invited guests viewed the first show in the new space, themed “Facing Our Future”. The gallery will host rotating art exhibitions, classes and workshops throughout the year for the community to

enjoy. “Art has a special way of connecting us, whether it be fine art, spoken word or music,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I am so pleased to welcome the Islip Arts Council’s new gallery to the 16th Legislative District and I congratulate them on a successful grand opening. I hope you will visit them soon to view the unique local art on display, to sign-up for a class or to purchase some beautiful

artwork.” The Islip Arts Council Gallery is located next to Dick’s Sporting Goods at the Westfield Mall, 1701 Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore. Gallery viewing hours will be from 11:00am – 4:00pm daily with evening hours and special events announced periodically. East Islip Student Makes A Big Splash In The County-Wide “Be Pool-Smart” Contest Legislator Tom Cilmi presented a proclamation to Anndrea Pumay, winner of this year’s “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Anndrea is a third grade student from JFK Elementary School in East Islip. Having been selected by Legislator Cilmi as the 10th District winner, Anndrea’s poster was submitted and subsequently chosen by the Legislature’s Budget Review Office as the overall County-wide winner. More than 200 entries were

submitted to Legislator Cilmi’s office alone. Due to COVID, the Legislature was not able to honor last year’s contestants so Legislator Cilmi also presented a certificate to Alyssa Toala, a second grade student from Connetquot Elementary School in Islip Terrace, whose poster placed second in the 2020 County-wide contest. Legislator Cilmi said, “Anndrea is the third County-wide winner from

the 10th District in the last twelve years, all of whom came from the East Islip School District. That tells me two things: first, we have some really creative young people in East Islip; second, we have some very inspiring teachers. My congratulations go to Anndrea and her teacher Mrs. Wilson, and my thanks goes to all those students and teachers who participated.”

Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
