The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! This summer art festival features a variety of fine arts and crafts including paintings, ceramics and pottery, photography, fiber art, glass art, artisan jewelry and more. Flotteron, East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club held a press conference about the “100 Deadliest Days” on June 12, with a massive display of smashed cars set up by Bang Towing in front of the school

as the backdrop. Teen auto crash rates rise dramatically during the 100 Deadliest Days, which last from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Led by SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo, the event brought awareness to the dangers of drinking/texting and driving, driving while impaired and distracted driving. “The SADD Club is

committed to educating students, staff and community that acts such as drinking and driving or texting and driving can not only affect your life but the lives of others,” said Lopiccolo. “We do not want to lose another student or community member to these preventable decisions.”

to present the interactive half-hour clinic, which covers car and helmet safety and gives the students a chance to dress up as doctors and nurses and take care of their injured toys.

17 Student-Athletes Earn 21 Medals At Special Olympics For the fourth consecutive year, the East Islip Redmen competed at the Special Olympics New York Spring Games North, held on May 11 at Bethpage High School. At the end of a spectacular day of competition, camaraderie and team spirit, the students brought home eight gold, eight silver and five bronze medals as well as six fourth-place ribbons, three fifth-place ribbons and three sixth-place ribbons. East Islip started its first Special Olympics team in 2016, entering six athletes that year to compete in the Spring Games. Since the program’s inception, 27 students have participated. Coached by physical education teachers Laura O’Donnell and Julie Susskind, this year’s team grew to 17 participating

student-athletes, including seven from East Islip Middle School (Jonathan Carberry, Rile Carrillo, Chloe Gagnon, Emily Kolensky, Jake Kozak, Janissa Llyod and Michael Pacheco), nine from East Islip High School (Anthony Agresta, Danny DiOrios , Emily Maccarone, Julia Modico, Santiago Pacheco, Robert Phillips, Jake Pipitone, Sara Spruyt and Kelly Stubblebeen) and one returning EI graduate (Donald Ahlers). “More important than the medals or ribbons is the day itself,” said middle school coach O’Donnell. “It’s a day the athletes, their families, coaches and volunteers come together and celebrate the true spirit with which the Special Olympics was founded: ‘Let me win, but if I can’t win, let me be brave in

the attempt.’ Our athletes show their bravery from the first day of training to the moment they step out onto the track and field on the day of the Games. I couldn’t be prouder to be their coach.” “We are excited about how the program is growing and look forward to continuing to offer more training and competition opportunities to our student-athletes,” said high school coach Susskind. The team members and their families enjoyed an annual pregame breakfast on May 9 in the middle school cafeteria, also attended by district administrators and volunteers, and the students were recognized at the Board of Education’s May business meeting.

Kaczynski Signs For Cheerleading East Islip High School senior Danielle Kaczynski will join the cheerleading team at LIU Post this fall. She is the first East Islip student to earn a cheerleading scholarship.

Kaczynski, who plans to major in business and minor in fashion merchandising, has been involved with cheerleading since age 4, starring as a member of All Star

Cheerleading, coaching younger athletes, serving as junior varsity captain at East Islip and performing on the varsity team for the last two years.
