burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Several “flocks” of flamingos were recently spotted around East Islip as a fun way to recognize the high school’s seniors and fundraise for East Islip High School’s Peer Support Leadership Club. The club’s team kicked off the fundraiser by

“flocking” valedictorian Shannon Wodicka and salutatorian Taylor Casali. Flocked seniors are then invited to participate in the fun game by “flocking it forward” with a donation, and can tell the ornithologists of East Islip where to relocate the

“Flocking It Forward” With East Islip’s Seniors flock during the migration. Seniors can also purchase “anti-flocking insurance” to keep the flock from migrating back. Parents, friends and family may also request to participate to have the flock migrate their way.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently broke ground for a new $17 million Student Center to be constructed at SJC Long Island located in Patchogue, New York. Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College was joined by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, State Assemblymen Doug Smith and Jarret Gandolfo, County Legislator Rob Calarco and members of the SJC Board of Trustees for the special occasion. The Student Center, which is being built to serve the institution’s growing student population, will be financed by the College’s bond issue and is the first new building to be constructed on the campus in 18 years. “This project is something that unites us,” said Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College. “This building is a door through which we can walk into

new relationships with our neighbors and with each other. This building will not just contain classrooms, but it will contain spaces and technology that will serve to connect our students to each other and to the outside world.” The two-story 32,000 square-foot Student Center will feature indoor and outdoor spaces including a dining area, art gallery, chapel and office for campus ministry, veterans lounge, spirit gift shop, E-sports unit, computer and lounge spaces, conference and meeting rooms and offices for faculty, staff and student clubs. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2021 and anticipated to be completed by spring 2023. Also recognized at the board meeting that evening were 2020-2021 SCOPE Award for Excellence for Support Staff Service winners Donna Bushelon and Michelle Hickey as well as the high school’s varsity teams that earned ScholarAthlete recognition. Islip High School recently honored Class of 2016 alumna Erika Macrelli, a member of the school’s ecology-oriented Keep Islip Clean club, by dedicating a new bridge in the school courtyard to her memory. The June 7 ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting by Macrelli’s family and the release of more than a thousand ladybugs into the courtyard’s Insect Hotel. “Within a day or two of learning about Erika’s passing last December, teachers, community members and 2016 alumni were already asking what could be done to recognize a student who brought a luminous spirit and beautiful smile with her whenever she walked into the high school,” said science teacher

and KIC club adviser Wayne Mennecke. “The new bridge design was chosen with input from the Macrelli family for its sunrise pattern, which expresses hope, optimism and anticipation. It was assembled by KIC students and placed above the courtyard pond so that future classes of Islip students can continue to appreciate this spot the way Erika did as a member of KIC. The plaque affixed to the bridge is inscribed with Erika’s name and the phrase ‘Forever Loved,’ a perfect description for how Islip feels about Erika today and always. Islip always finds a way to work together as a community in support of a family in need. That level of kindness and generosity will extend into the next school year

East Islip Boys Track Team Takes Fifth In Divisionals

East Islip High School’s boys varsity track team recently finished in fifth place in their division championship. Josh Terhune led the way by winning the 800-meter race with a time of 2:00.03, one of the fastest times in the county, and placing fourth in the high jump. EI’s 4 x 100 relay team of Joe Margo, Vinny Mariani,

Peterson Lowman and Kevin Smith also took first place. Second-place finishers included Jason Conzo in pole vault, Smith in the 100-meter race and Javier Ornella in shot put. The 4 x 400 relay team of Conzo, Nick Groneman, James Kelly and Josh Terhune finished in third place, running an impressive

race, while Ryan Auffant place fourth in the discus throw. “It was a great team effort watching the boys battle through such tough conditions,” said coach Ralph Tubello. “Congratulations to all the champions and place winners.”

The Fourth of July is Near, Read About it Here!

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July. June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month; learn about the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center and the work they do! For over 30 years the Long Island Alzheimer’s & Dementia (LIAD) Center has served as a lifeline to diagnosed individuals and their

families throughout Long Island. Their mission is to help improve the quality of life for diagnosed individuals and caregivers living with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias. The LIAD Center takes considerable pride in its pioneering role in the development of cutting-edge services that foster the independence, dignity well-being and safety of individuals with dementia, thus aiding in the prevention of premature nursing home placement. Their caring professionals help program participants maximize their remaining abilities, while providing much-needed information, support and respite to family caregivers. They are committed to the belief that there is life worth living after a diagnosis. Their services include: • Stage-Specific Day Programs: Monday – Saturday, 10AM-3PM, lunch included. • Virtual Activities • In-Home Respite: Home visits that relieve caregivers and engage with diagnosed individuals. • Day Program Transportation:

PSEG Long Island is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. PSEG Long Island’s systems have undergone upgrades, performance tuning and numerous tests. “We are prepared and ready to respond,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and chief operating officer, PSEG Long Island. “PSEG Long Island is committed to continually improving system reliability and enhancing the experience our customers have when

they connect with us, and we have been working nonstop to fulfill that commitment. PSEG Long Island continues to make strategic investments to serve our customers today and in the future.” IT Systems Enhancements and Testing Success PSEG Long Island has continued to make enhancements to its IT systems and has conducted robust testing of the outage management and telephony systems. Last week, PSEG Long Island completed a successful end-to-end test of the version 5.5 outage management and telephony systems in an extreme weather scenario. This endto-end test is in addition to other successful tests, which included one simulating up to 90% of the customer base reporting outages over a 24hour period. Business Continuity and Emergency Procedures PSEG Long Island updated its business continuity and

emergency procedures to reflect changes and updates to address PSEG Long Island’s response in the event of a failure of critical systems. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has conducted three drills of these procedures with its dedicated workforce. Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s recent infrastructure improvements include: New transformers installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Culloden Point, Roslyn, Far Rockaway and Flowerfield substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand

4 new distribution feeder lines installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Roslyn and Flowerfield areas to accommodate load growth 6 distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability A new transmission circuit installed between the Riverhead and Canal substation A transmission circuit upgraded between the Wildwood and Riverhead substations Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Storm-

hardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in storm damage and 42% fewer outages. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional 59 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. Work on the first circuits began in April 2020 and will continue over the next five years. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages

during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summer-peak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.

Legislative Steven J. Flotteron recently hosted the Legislature’s Monthly Meeting with the assistance of East Islip High School Senior, Marie Tohill, who sang the National Anthem. She was an Honor student, President of EIHS Students Against

Destructive Decisions Club, in top ten of her class and was a member of the Girl’s Golf Team. She will be attending Muhlenberg College in the fall, where she will study musical theatre. Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip

East Islip High School student-artist and National Art Honor Society member Sarah Piccinini recently won the Visitors Choice Award in the 25th annual “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” exhibition, which ran at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington from April 17 to May 23. Piccinini’s mixed media piece, “Decomposing,” was inspired by Denise Adler’s “Same Battles, Same

Victims,” which was on view in the Long Island Biennial 2020. More than 2,800 votes were cast for this award this year – by individuals visiting the museum in person as well as online – with over 700 cast for Piccinini’s work. “I hope viewers discover their own connection with nature and change their perception of death when they view my work,” Piccinini said. “I also created it to spread

environmental awareness. Due to industrialization and capitalism, we have forgotten the importance of environmental conservation.
