Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

A Quilt is Built Showcasing their growing planning and tool use skills as well as pride in their school, eight students in East Islip Middle School’s Family and Consumer Science Club – Mia Castillo, Juli Chillemi, Meagan Diaz, Evie Orlando, Emma Sasso, Miranda Stockton, Kasey Turtell and Kim Turtell – worked tirelessly to complete an “East Islip Pride” T-shirt quilt, now on display in the school’s main lobby. With help from FACS teacher Dani Shehada and paraprofessional Diane Doyle, the students used East Islip Redmen shirts to create a unique continuous quilt pattern. Once the colors were chosen, the students were taught how to properly trace the shirts into 12x12 fabric squares and to cut them out accurately using fabric shears. Then the students assembled the quilt by pinning all of the T-shirts together in the pattern they created. Each student took a part in sewing the quilt permanently on the sewing machine. In a final creative decision, the

FACS Club members chose to add a thick black border around the quilt to finalize its look. “I love how the quilt came out,” said Orlando, a sixth-grader. “I can’t believe how professional it looks.

“Our East Islip Pride T-shirt quilt was a labor of love which took over four months to complete,” said Shehada. “Quilt making is a fun, creative and practical way to create something that you can have forever.”
