The East Islip Middle School girls lacrosse team ended a great season on June 5th, after playing nine games. Contributors to their 5-4 record included high goal scorers Hanna Benardos, Lindsay Clark, Lindsay Guzzetta, Nia Kalodimos and Isabella Pasha, and strong goalkeepers Kristen Bayreuther and Amanda Kreush. Top defenders who protected the goalies and made many interceptions were Erin Cairney, Shannon Carney and Kelsey Gonzalez. Midfielders Lyndsie Brunner, Kerry Donnelly, Kristen Kelliher and Ashley Kniff were noted for their ability to play both defense and offense and skillfully move the ball up and down the field.

I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before

my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, ﬂying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

Joining The Ranks Of The Alumni

With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the fleeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would

stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their

lives. As I stood beside them on that morning when we moved our tassels, it became clear that we were in this journey together. I am moving on to Villanova, and we were parting ways. However, I feel as though I will be crossing paths with many of my classmates in the future. As an official St. John’s Alumni, I have joined the ranks of those who presented on Career Day. One day, many years from now, I hope to stand alongside my classmates yet again, bragging about my accomplishments, and hearing what my friends have done with their lives.

Dina Palazzolo of East Islip, N.Y., was one of 16 students from Susquehanna University who recently spent two weeks studying the music, architecture, art and cuisine of northern Italy as part of the university’s Global Opportunities (GO) program. Participating students lived with host families while attending music lessons and rehearsals at the Scuola Comunale di Musica a “G. Sarti” in Faenza, and cooking Italian cuisine alongside a local chef. The group toured architectural treasures of the Byzantine Empire, explored towns in Tuscany and EmiliaRomangna, visited religious centers and attended cultural events. Palazzolo is studying earth and environmental science at Susquehanna, where she will be a senior in the fall. She is a 2011 graduate of East Islip High School and the daughter of Carl and Susan Palazzolo.

Gia Gremaux, a sixthgrader at East Islip Middle School, won first place in the annual AMVETS National Americanism Essay Contest. This year’s theme was “What The American Flag Means To Me.” In Gremaux’s essay, she honored her uncle and grandfather, who both served in the U.S. military. “When Gia showed her grandfather the essay, he was so touched that he cried,” said her ELA teacher, Jennifer Esposito,

who had encouraged the student to enter the contest. “He told her that whatever the outcome of the contest, he was extremely proud of her.” “Gia comes to school every day with a smile on her face,” said Esposito. “She is a wonderful student who shows her enthusiasm in everything she does. One of Gia’s many passions is writing, and I congratulate her on a well-done and poignant essay.” In addition to being

a budding writer, the well-rounded Gremaux is involved in numerous after-school activities, playing on travel teams for the East Islip Soccer Club’s Celtic team, East Islip Youth Lacrosse and St. Mary’s CYO Basketball of East Islip. Artists Featured

Ten artists from East Islip High School were featured in LIU Post’s 11th annual 12x12 High School Art Exhibition during May. The students, as well as fellow young artists from 28 other Long Island high schools, were selected by their teachers to represent their high schools in the exhibition, and attended a special closing reception on May 22nd at Post’s Hillwood Student Art League Gallery. The exhibition was open to 12x12 two-dimensional media, 12x12x12 threedimensional media and videos of no more than 144 seconds, and included

awards in such categories as oil pastel, acrylic/ oil, watercolor, colored pencil, graphite, digital illustration, mixed media, sculpture, video and photography. “The artwork displayed represents visual expressions with dynamic connections to artistic mediums, and impactful personal content,” said exhibition coordinator Elizabeth Hinkson. Creative Exploration

This spring, fifth-grade students in Kathy Carter’s music classes at Timber Point Elementary School used Lynne Cherry’s story of “The Great Kapok Tree” to teach life lessons to the school’s younger students. Using the Common Core rain forest modules, the students incorporated science, ecology, geography, social studies, art, music, composition and literature to present a readers’ theater-style script-reading presentation of the story for the younger classes. Under Carter’s guidance, the fifth-graders explored environmental issues while composing original music, creating a rain forest “cacophony” using authentic indigenous instruments found in South America. “The emphasis of the presentation was on the sounds of the animals, insects and rain from the forest, forming a ‘sound symphony,’” said Carter.

They also wrote lyrics for an original studentcomposed song about saving the kapok tree. To recreate the atmosphere of the Amazon rain forest, the students embarked on a take-home project to create original masks representing their characters. Lastly, they painted a replica of the kapok tree under the direction of Timber Point art teacher Christina Spera-Bartlett, who also assisted the students in decorating the stage’s proscenium with foliage and animals created in her art classes. “They really used their imagination to bring the rain forest alive,” said Carter. The younger students, who also have studied the rain forest in their respective classes, were enthralled with the presentation, and many commented on how much they loved the rain forest music, how realistic the

masks looked and how it influenced their awareness of conservation.“The presentation was a great way to influence our young students to help preserve the environment,” said fifth-grader Maddie Burhart. Her classmate Olivia Pause added, “It helped inspire students to work together toward a common goal.” “This ‘Great Kapok Tree’ project empowered our students to explore their creativity through different art forms – whether it was singing, composing, writing lyrics, playing the instruments, acting, painting or researching the environment of the rain forest,” said Carter. “The students did a wonderful job, and they were tremendously enthusiastic throughout the entire project.” Photo by: East Islip School District

Kennedy Elementary, were working on the project in

Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.

In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck. You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you, Her heart fills with dread and gloom. Eighth-grade students at Islip Middle School continued the almost20-year tradition of setting aside a day in May to pay respects to the lives lost during World War II through Holocaust Remembrance Day, organized by social studies teachers Michael Argenziano and Christine Cabanas. Students viewed the documentary “Paperclips,” welcomed Holocaust survivor Werner Reich and were awed by a live

performance of “From the Fires: Voices of the Holocaust” by Theatre Three Productions, which was provided by the IMS PTA. During his presentation, Mr. Reich spoke of the atrocities of World War II and used the lessons of the Holocaust to discuss fighting intolerance and bullying. He shared his experiences during World War II, including his emigration from Germany to Yugoslavia, two years spent in hiding, two years
