he Islip School District launched its 7th Annual Summer Reading Initiative at the Barnes & Noble Book Fair in Bay Shore, replete with music, reading and crafts. Organized by Lisa Ward, the high school’s assistant principal, and Ellen Semel, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, the Book Fair’s main purpose is to celebrate reading. A portion of the Book Fair’s proceeds was donated to the district.

Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. is pleased to announce its annual Regatta and Awards dinner which will take place over two days: on June 18th at the Oyster Bay Marine Center and on June 20th at the Sagamore Yacht Club, both in Oyster Bay. Proceeds will benefit services offered by ADRC and help fund local Alzheimer’s research and support. The Regatta events will begin with The Classics on Thursday, June 18th, 2015 at the Oyster Bay Marine Center, 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, starting at 5 p.m. Proceeds from this event will benefit both ADRC and Oakcliff Sailing. Non-members of Oakcliff Sailing will have the opportunity to crew on vintage wooden yachts, the oldest one dating back to 1903. In order to participate, non-members
must raise a minimum of $150. The Plastics will race on Saturday, June 20th, beginning at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at 1 Bay Avenue, Oyster Bay. Boats of any size and skippers of any level of racing experience are invited to take part. Participants must register online prior to the event and present sponsor donations upon arrival. Captains will meet at noon and First Gun of the Pursuit Race will sound promptly at 1 p.m. Paddling for Poker will also commence the same day. This event is open to all paddle boarders and kayakers, who should meet at 2 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West Avenue, Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats at 3 p.m. to pick up a poker card at each boat. These cards will make up their poker hand. The best hand

wins, and will be presented at the Awards Dinner. Kayak rentals are available. Those who raise $200 or more will not be charged for a two-hour kayak rental or the Awards Dinner. An Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club will close the two-day event. Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., followed by an Italian buffet at 6 p.m. Dinner is $75 per person. Those who raise at least $100 will not be charged for dinner. Awards will be presented to the top racers, top fundraiser, and the Paddling for Poker winner. The event will include a Silent Auction, Raffle and live entertainment provided by The South Bay Salty Dogs. The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015. Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in addition to offering longtime favorite activities. Formerly held at the Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills. Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Back again is “Animal Kingdom” week, where kids discover the art of working with live animals. Selmer’s Pet Land has brought smiles to the faces of young artists as their cooperative models have inspired beautiful works of art. In three two-week sessions for teens ages 12-14 there are projects in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, digital design, mixed media, and a field trip to a plein air painting experience. In an effort to expand program options, the Art League has partnered with the Park Shore Day Camp to offer kids ages 5-9 the choice of the regularly scheduled Summer Art

Simmer Down, Society By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied? We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal
comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to
fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Americanism Awards Eight students from East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School were recognized by AMVETS and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Post 18 for winning awards in the annual AMVETS National Americanism Essay Contest (whose theme this year was “What Does Freedom Look Like?”) as well as the National Americanism Poster Contest to draw an American flag.
For second grade, the winners were Gianna Trager in first place, Amanda Bolen in second and Keira Higgins in third. The first grade’s winners were Kaylee Glocksien in first place, Tyler Seelig in second and Dylan Horodyski in third. Kindergarten winners were Kayla Rizzo in first place and Yariel Turcios in third. At a May 18th ceremony,
the students were joined by their parents, family members, Principal Deborah Smith, and teachers Leslie Davis, Rose Eger and Susan Hunter. “The audience learned the meaning of the traditional flag-folding ceremony, and we were also encouraged to reflect proudly on what it means to be a citizen of the United States of America,” said Smith.
Runners Finish Strong The East Islip High School boys varsity track team competed at the divisional championships on May 27th and 29th, with four Redmen athletes turning in outstanding performances.
Junior Will Reed finished third in the 1,600-meter run, junior Rob Sarno came in fourth in the high jump, senior Zach Acocella finished sixth in triple jump and fourth in the 4000 meter dash, and
senior Kevin Rosand’s throw earned him seventh place in the shot put “Congratulations to all of the boys who participated at this meet and throughout the season,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo.

Next Superintendent
At a special meeting on Tuesday, June 9th, the East Islip Board of Education appointed John V. Dolan as the district’s new superintendent of schools, effective July 1st, 2015. “We are very happy to welcome a person of John’s caliber to our district,” said Board President Steven Behan. “He is a true academic leader, and we are confident he will serve our district well as its new superintendent. His love of education will continue to push our district toward achieving and maintaining the high academic standards we have come to expect.”
“I want to thank the Board of Education for this opportunity,” said Mr. Dolan. “I look forward to a long and enriching relationship with the Board of Education, parents, community and staff on our shared goal of supporting and guiding all of our students. I am committed to building upon the success of East Islip by helping every child succeed to the highest level.” Mr. Dolan has been an educator for almost 20 years, the past five of which he has worked as a principal at Sachem North High School in the Sachem Central School District. During his time in Sachem, Mr. Dolan helped to create and implement many different programs to enhance students’ education. He successfully implemented the character education program “Manners Matter,” which helped reduce suspension and disciplinary referrals.
He implemented teacher website programs to facilitate a better school-tohome connection, as well as revamped the master scheduling process to be more student-centered and efficient based on student needs. Prior to his administrative experience in Sachem, Mr. Dolan began his educational career in the PatchogueMedford School District, where he taught history and economics before becoming the dean of students. He then took a job as the assistant principal at a middle school in Smithtown before being promoted to principal at Smithtown West. Ecologically minded students from East Islip High School’s Environment Green Career Academy volunteered for the first time to participate in Seatuck’s recent EcoCarnival, held at the Suffolk County Environmental Center preserve in Islip, where they manned booths and educated visitors about local flowers and wildlife. The high schoolers helped set up the day before, working with Seatuck staff to rake and clean the preserve, as well as setting up locations where visitors could come and learn about the
different types of flowers that are found on Long Island as well as the plants that are invasive to the area. They also constructed a booth to help visiting elementary students learn about wildlife on the property, such as insects and birds; helped set up a stage for entertainment by a local singing group; and designed game areas for the elementary students. During the day of the Eco-Carnival, the visiting children were also given a tour of the salt marsh located at one end of the preserve, with the high schoolers lecturing about
ospreys and quail. In preparation for the event, Career Academy students worked on presentations in their environment research class with science teacher John Reilly. “I am proud of all of the Environment Career Academy students, and their willingness to give back to the community and educate Islip Town’s children about our environment and our wildlife,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer.

Track Records Fall After a successful regular season led by coach John Reynolds, the East Islip girls track team headed to the postseason with their eyes set on lofty goals, and came home with both medals and a stack of broken school records. At the divisional championships on May 26th and 28th, the Lady Redmen came in second with 89 points, only two behind champions Huntington. It was the most points and highest placing in East Islip history. Senior and defending winter state high jump champion Faith Penny won the triple jump (setting a school record with her score of 36’1) as well as the high jump

Junior Anya Schmitt set a school record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in second place with a time of 7:22.4. Schmitt also earned fourth-place in both the in the 1,500-meter and 3,000 meter races. Senior Lexi Bolster, who dominated in discus this year as the top thrower in Suffolk County, tossed the discus 115’10, setting a school record and earning her second place, while in pentathlon, senior Danielle Raccomandato scored
1,922 points, earning third place. The 100- and 200-meter competitions featured a strong showing by the sophomore Ginty sisters. Jackie Ginty came in second and third, respectively; Katie Ginty finished fifth in both. In the relay events, the team of senior Michaila Dattero, Jackie Ginty, Katie Ginty and junior Christina Talamo, took second in the 4x100 meters. Their time of 49.54 set a school record, as did the 9:55.66 time of the 4x800-meter team of eighth-grader Christie Czajka, junior Amanda Engrassia, sophomore Rachel Florenz and Schmitt, which earned them third place.

Building Bridges Big Egg Hunt, Guarino cultivated the concept and introduced the idea to his staff and members of East Islip’s eiMAPS arts support organization last September. The districtwide art staff soon began brainstorming ways to create extra large eggs and built exemplary lesson plans around the concept that was presented to their students. Each teacher guided their students in selecting themes as well as the particular mediums used for each egg. Sponsorships were obtained for each egg, totaling $3,3000, with the money earmarked to replenish the art and music department’s senior scholarship fund. Once the sponsorships were in place,
Guarino sought big egg hosts and contacted local business owners, who were thrilled with the idea. “The students were very creative in coming up with ideas for big eggs, and it was a lot of fun to see the eggs out in the community,” said East Islip High School art teacher Heather Toomey. After the Big Egg Hunt came to a close, the eggs were delivered to the district’ Art and Jazz Festival for auction, with proceeds to benefit eiMAPS. “I am grateful to my art staff as well as the sponsors and business owners for participating in the event and for sharing my dream of bringing art to the forefront of the community,” said Guarino.
Three members of East Islip High School’s girls varsity golf team – juniors Kristen Linz and Kate Maretsly, and senior and team captain Justina Marku – earned All-League
status and participated in the Suffolk County girls golf championships at Middle Island Country Club on May 26th and 29th. Marku shot well enough
to return for the second day of the tournament, which includes the county’s top four teams and top 30 golfers.

Celebrating Reading
The Islip School District launched its seventh annual summer reading initiative on May 27th at the Barnes & Noble Book Fair in Bay Shore, replete with music, reading and crafts. Organized by Lisa Ward, the high school’s assistant principal, and Ellen Semel, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, the Book Fair’s main purpose is to BUILDING BRIDGES - East Islip’s first Big Egg Hunt this spring showcased the celebrate reading. along with copies of books for perusal. A portion of the Book Fair’s proceeds was donated to the district. During the extensive event, elementary principals – including Commack Road’s Jeannette Feminella and Wing’s Christopher Smalley – and teachers read their favorite stories aloud. The Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, led by Steve Campanella, and the Swing vocal group, directed by Rich Harris, both performed, along with a new elite string ensemble
called Tangled. Students from the primary grades decorated cupcakes, and artwork from students in grades K-12 was prominently displayed in the windows of the store. A new addition this year was a visit from the high school’s department of family and consumer science. Guided by teacher Heidi Kissinger, students prepared delicious confections that were sugar free or gluten free.
