Rising to the Challenge Islip Middle School sixthgraders in the district’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted visited the acclaimed 41 Cooper Square academic center at Cooper Union’s New York City campus on May 20th, where they attended a STEM workshop and talked with Cooper Union engineering professor George Delegrammatikas. Designed by Morphosis architect Thom Mayne to green specifications nd opened in 2009, 41 Cooper Square houses the Albert Nerken School of Engineering, the Frederick P. Rose Auditorium, the
Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Louis and Jeannette Brooks Computer Center, the Herb Lubalin Study Center, the Saturday Outreach Program, and other laboratories, classrooms, studios, and retail spaces. In 2010, it was the first academic building in Manhattan to be awarded the LEED Platinum rating for reducing energy use and enhancing the environment. Islip’s EXCEL students and program coordinator Julia Johnson have been visiting Cooper Union for many years, but this was
the first trip for Assistant Principal James Cameron, who didn’t hesitate to join students in their hands-on STEM challenge, working with circuitry. “Visiting with the Cooper Union students and faculty was a great opportunity for our students to see the resources that the world and New York City have to offer,” said Cameron. “Professor Delegrammatikas’ message to the students was to continuously seek and solve the world’s problems by thinking and acting locally.”
Holocaust survivor Werner Reich recently shared his experiences and offered wise solutions to bullying and intolerance in a memorable, moving talk with students at Islip Middle School. The May assembly was part of the school’s annual Holocaust remembrance, which it has been holding in various forms for the past 20 years, forming part of the character education program as well as part of Islip’s studies on World War II, civics and citizenship. The program began with now retired teachers Adina Karp and Paul Tapogna, who brought in Holocaust survivor Max Tempkin and his wife Steffi to speak to the students. After about a dozen years, Tempkin was no longer able to attend, and teachers Rich Napolitano and Erica Rinear made arrangements through the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Nassau County to have Reich take over the presentations. Reich, a Smithtown
resident and retired industrial engineer, was a prisoner at several infamous concentration camps between the ages of 15 and 17. His ordeal began when his family was forced to move from Berlin to Zagreb, Yugoslavia in 1933. When the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia, Reich was forced to live in hiding for two years before being found, arrested and sent to the Terezin camp in 1943. He was transferred to Auschwitz in 1944, where he was tattooed with a number and barely avoided the gas chambers. After a winter death march, Reich was sent to the Mauthausen camp, where he was eventually liberated by American troops on May 5th, 1945. In his discussion, he pointed out parallels between past atrocities and modern bullying behaviors, and urged each student to be a JUST person, an acronym he devised that stands for “judge situation, understand problem, solve and take action.”
“The one thing that always stands out to me about Mr. Reich is the idea of acceptance not tolerance,” said Assistant Principal James Cameron. “His message to the students is to be accepting of others, not tolerant. When you are tolerant of people, you may at times become intolerant. When you accept others, you are more at peace with who and what they stand for.” “That message is a powerful one in today’s climate of bullying and prejudice,” added eighthgrade social studies teacher Michael Argenziano. “Mr. Reich uses his experiences to connect the students to the how and why an event like the Holocaust did happen and can happen again. In an engaging and exploratory engineering workshop presented by the Maritime Museum’s Melora Lane, students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School designed racecars using recycled materials and math and physics concepts. The “Let’s Get Rolling” event, part of the Maritime Explorium program, began with a presentation by Lane on how people in Senegal reuse scrap
market materials. The students then began a design process, keeping the environmental impact of materials in mind, and created their own racecars with the recycled materials. They also built a ramp to test the cars, designed experiments, measured the distances their cars traveled and kept track of their findings. Christine LeMaire, whose fourth-grade class participated in the activity,
noted that the program’s strength was that it was student-driven. “The Maritime Explorium really made the students become engineers and work on problem solving,” she said. The Maritime Explorium program, which included an integral professional development segment for teachers, was facilitated by Islip’s Standards of Excellence Committee, a partnership between the
school and the community that involves shared decision-making. The Committee’s goal is to promote diverse learning experiences through curriculum instruction to provide the best possible education for the district’s

Exploring Engineering students. “This program provided our fourth-grade teachers and students the opportunity to incorporate a challengebased curriculum through STEM,” said teacher and SOE Committee
member Ann Hess. “With Maritime Explorium’s professional development and hands-on activities, the Committee felt that it would be an engaging learning experience, built on current New York State science standards.”

I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through
the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.
