The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!
The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.
America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.
Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.
On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

manners and socialization skills, while also attending group obedience classes.
Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.
After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.
When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations
The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in
support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.
The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and
provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers
for the program.
The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,
according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.
“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”
Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board honored five students from the Town of Islip who received the U.S. Army’s Minuteman Scholarship. The Minuteman Scholarship Program is a Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship introduced in 2015 to enhance the Army Reserve’s ability to recruit
highly qualified cadets every year.
The five high school seniors who received the scholarships for their academic success and service to the ROTC include Valery Rodriguez, Jocelyn Velasquez, Diana Saltos from Brentwood and twins Christopher and Courtney Skahill from West Islip.
“Valery, Jocelyn, Diana, Christopher and Courtney
proved themselves to be fantastic candidates for the Minuteman Scholarship. Their participation in the ROTC program at their high schools exemplifies their dedication for our nation and scholarly excellence… we look forward to the bright future ahead of each of you,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
“This is the highest amount ever given in
a single year to one Township,” said Steve Castleton, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, whose team selects the scholarship recipients. The scholarship provides full tuition and fees or room and board ($10,000 per year), for up to four years at a public or private college. Scholarship recipients also receive a monthly stipend and a yearly book allowance.
