Islip High School senior Alex DaSilva, along with his AP government classmates and teacher Craig Brown, attended Hofstra University’s seventh annual High School Student Symposium and Essay Contest in March, and DaSilva won the ensuing essay contest. The symposium, cosponsored by the School of Education and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American

Presidency, featured speakers Howard Dean, former Vermont governor and presidential candidate, and Edward J. Rollins, former campaign director for Pres. Ronald Reagan. The event provides high school students and teachers with a view of presidential leadership from the perspective of two seasoned political analysts, and invites the conversations about relevant topics.

In recognition of his winning essay, DaSilva was given an award and was invited, accompanied by Brown, to attend a discussion at Hofstra featuring Dean and Rollins, titled “What Do the First 100 Days Teach About the Trump Presidency?” DaSilva was given the opportunity to meet and speak with both Dean and Rollins.

Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School has a new principal, James Cameron, who will take over on July 1st from Acting Principal Brian McCarthy. Since February 2014, Cameron has served with distinction as the assistant principal of Islip Middle School. Students at Islip’s high school and middle school recently participated in the 2017 Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge, in which they competed to create innovative and userfriendly projects that take new approaches to real-life challenges. Each challenge required students to complete an application and follow the LIFACS four-point scale rubric. Guided by FACS teachers Natalie Hamilton

and Heidi Stevens, the Islip students developed their projects to submit to the LIFACS competition. Three Islip students took home first-place awards in three different categories for both middle school and high school divisions. Sixth-graders Kyle Widecki and Emily Wirth were named grand prize winners in the “Let Them Eat Cake” and “It’s Not Easy Being Green” challenges. Additionally, Hamilton was awarded the Promising New Professional Award for Suffolk County, recognizing her excellence in the classroom and her profession. I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our ﬂedgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. Competing against 15 other teams from Suffolk, Nassau and New York City, East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team took second place in the recent New York State Law Day Tournament, hosted by Northport High School. East Islip was represented

43rd year, was sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and the Law, Youth, and Citizenship Committee. Teams of five students were given 12 minutes to prepare a legal case based on a one-page summary of facts. At the end of the 12-minute prep period, the students had to argue the case as attorneys and witnesses against another school’s team. A coin toss determined which team was plaintiff and defense during each round. This year’s cases included negligence, defamation, assault and battery, product liability, vicarious liability and breach of contract. East Islip’s team went undefeated through five rounds, picking off strong teams such as Syosset and Plainview-Old Bethpage. Facing hosts Northport, they came in second in the championship round, which featured a judging panel that included New York State Bar Association Past-President A. Thomas Levin, District Court Judge Hon. James C. Hudson, Professor Thomas Schweitzer of Touro Law School, and Queens Assistant District Attorney Josh Mandel. On a summery Friday in late May, student members of Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean Club celebrated their 11th annual Pond Day event with a number of important environmental projects that benefited the community. This year, students built an “insect hotel”” out of stacked wooden pallets and recyclable materials. According to the club’s adviser, Wayne Mennecke, such insect hotels provide places for beneficial insects and pollinators to hide in a garden. Most insect hotels

consist of several different sections that offer shelter or refuge for many types of insects, providing them with nesting facilities, particularly during winter. After the completion of the hotel, KIC students released 200 ladybugs into the courtyard. Students also repaired a swale drainage system leading into Pardees Pond next to the campus tennis courts. Swales filter rainwater from the parking lot before it runs off into the pond. Toxins, pollutants and oil from cars will be removed

Additionally, students reinstalled 10 duck nesting boxes in the lake and beautified the gardens in the courtyard area, assisted by district parents Ivy Englehardt and Ken Phalen. A Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant helped pay for many of the building supplies. The KIC Club is affiliated with the Town of Islip’s Keep Islip Clean program. Each year, high schools across the township elect junior commissioners who are sworn in during an official ceremony. These students represent their community by sharing projects with other students from across Islip during monthly meetings. Through this leadership program, students serve their community and act as positive role models for others. For the 20162017 school year, Islip High School has five junior commissioners who serve as KIC Club officers, often guiding other students in the club and assisting Mennecke.

PTA Reﬂections Contest

Four East Islip students – Elizabeth Hillman, Fallon Juengerkes, Michael Orgera and Kiara Zeledon – made it to the state level of the 2016-2017 PTA Reﬂections contest, an annual national student recognition program that seeks to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom

and at home. Inspiring original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts, this year’s common theme was “What Is Your Story?” Ruth C. Kinney

Elementary School thirdgrader Kiara Zeledon’s entry in the field of dance choreography, “Human”, won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence and New York State Award of Excellence, going on to compete at the national level. “I did a lyrical contemporary dance about how I feel when I try out for parts in dance class and don’t get them,” said Zeledon, who won at the county and state level last year for her dance “Girl on Fire.” Another RCK student, fifth-grader Fallon Juengerkes, received the Suffolk County Award of Merit in the literature category for “The Best Day and the Worst Day of My Life.” “I thought deeply about the best and worst days of my life,” said Juengerkes. “I wrote about when my mom was going through treatments for breast

East Islip Middle School’s library held a contest to guess the weight of April the giraffe’s newborn calf. The Animal Adventure Park near upstate Binghamton had been holding a contest to name April’s baby. On April 15th, April delivered a healthy calf named Oliver, weighing 129 lbs.

East Islip High School’s Class of 2017 valedictorian and salutatorian are Jack Palmeri and Alexandra Belyea, respectively. An AP Scholar with Distinction, Palmeri is a member of the school’s Math Honor Society and Academic Team. From freshman through senior year, he annually earned the High Minds in Motion ScholarAthlete Award. He competes on the varsity track tea and

volunteers at the Emanuel Lutheran Church soup kitchen in Patchogue. Palmeri won the Rensselaer Medal merit scholarship last year for his superlative academic achievements in mathematics and science, and will major in engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Belyea, also an AP Scholar with Distinction, serves as secretary of the National Honor Society, and is a

member of the Foreign Language Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, SADD Club and Interact Club. She was also honored as a Breakfast of Champions recipient. Broadcaster Wins Big The hardworking staff of East Islip High School’s The Broadcaster student newspaper proudly took home 23 awards from the Long Island Press High School Journalism Awards ceremony, hosted at Hofstra University on May 30th. Prizes were given in 106 different categories. The night was a success for both the Broadcaster staff and individual members. The Broadcaster itself earned an honorable mention for Newspaper of the Year, won second place in both the LayoutSection category, for its sports section, and in the Layout-Issue category, for the paper’s February 2017 issue.
