Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Poster Contest Winners approval from the Suffolk County Legislature to launch a new bullying awareness website. The site will provide support and guidance for children who are or have been bullied. The site will launch in September 2014. “When it comes to bullying, it’s all about speaking up,” said Anker. “Cyber-bullying has increased dramatically over the past several years, and the county will have the opportunity to assist by providing valuable resources to those who need support. I’m looking forward to facilitating the website to help prevent the emotional scars that bullying can leave behind.”

As of July 1st, 2012, the New York State Dignity Act mandates that all schools must designate a point person, known as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC), to assist students who feel that they are being bullied. To assist school districts in meeting this mandate, the Suffolk County Dept. of Health Services Office of Health Education has developed and implemented an 8 to 14

session peer education program entitled: “Healthy Communication and Bullying Prevention.” The main goal of the program is to teach students how to stand up for someone being bullied rather than standing by passively. The purpose is to create “Up-stander Empathy from Bystander Apathy.” The result is that students are trained how to respond to aggression and how to stand up for those targeted, and then go into the classes and teach what they know. In October, Suffolk County will join the nation and declare October as National Bullying Prevention Month. The winning posters will be on display in the lobby of the H. Lee Dennison for all to witness your creativity and commitment to preventing bullying. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone commended winners of an anti-cyberbullying art contest at a ceremony on Friday, May 30th. “We all need to be part of the solution to ending the harm caused by cyber-bullying,” the County Executive said. “Bullying does not discriminate. It affects children on all socioeconomic levels, ages and ethnicities and its effects can be devastating, ranging from damaging a person’s self-esteem to substance abuse to causing physical harm, up to and including suicide. We are taking a step toward eliminating this problem by honoring students who are fighting to end it through their artwork.” The County Executive noted that in the United States alone, an estimated 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by their peers. One in 7 students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying. Statistics also show that 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school. The Suffolk County Office of Human Services sponsored the poster contest and disseminated guidelines for submission to all schools within Suffolk County. “We were extremely pleased with the response to the Anti-Cyberbullying Poster Contest,” said Roderick A. PearsonExecutive Director of the office of Human Services. “We thank the teachers and administrators for encouraging their students to participate and we thank all of the students for their submissions. Surrealism was the recent focus for students in East Islip High School teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s drawing classes, with the resulting artwork displayed in the school’s art wing and main lobby showcases. After studying iconic surrealist artist Salvador Dali’s portraits, the students looked at his paintings Galatea of the Spheres and Raphaelesque Head Exploding for inspiration, studying the various formal similarities of these works and also analyzing their differences. “Each Dali piece conveys a dreamlike quality through movement and ﬂoating shapes,” said Figliozzi. “The shapes form the portrait image, which was a goal for students in creating successful drawings.” The process for creating the student drawings was multifaceted and required numerous developmental steps. The young artists began by enlarging portraits of their choice via the grid enlargement method. They then chose shapes and forms – acting as positive space – to repeat throughout the composition of the portraits. All other areas of the compositions were erased and common backgrounds were chosen and applied. At this point, the shapes and portraits meshed together and organically formed a common theme for many of the students. Finally, the students used colored pencils to create fragmented drawings full of movement and interesting juxtapositions. “I got the idea for this lesson after viewing a painting in Scholastic magazine,” said Figliozzi. “It was my first

time teaching the lesson, which was a challenge.” “I enjoyed the project because you could pick whichever person you wanted, use whatever colors you wanted and make the drawing as close to the picture as possible,” said sophomore Nicole Cardone, who created an outstanding drawing of John Lennon. “The most challenging part of the project was to enlarge the picture.” Another difficulty for many students was the creation of subtle variations in skin tone. “Getting the colors of

Dahill. “I rarely make portraits, and the fact that it was a surreal portrait kept me interested.” Jasmin Cruz-Rivera created a drawing of “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth. “I enjoyed using my imagination to create a surrealist portrait,” she said. “I also liked being able to choose a theme in my drawing by adding various Marvel logos in the background.” Erica Budovsky and Bryan Dondero both utilized humor in their work. Dondero created a drawing of movie character Napoleon Dynamite with ﬂying and exploding tater tots in the background. “I liked having creative freedom to draw whatever made us happy,” said Budovsky. Other students, like junior Polina Arteev and senior Amanda Crosby, created self-portrait drawings. Crosby used organic shapes to fragment her face in her drawing, and incorporated cool grays in her background to contrast the warm shades of her skin tone. “I thought it was cool doing an interesting background underneath the portrait,” she said. “I’m really happy and proud of my students and the beautiful drawings they created,” said Figliozzi. “One of the hardest things to draw is a portrait. SHELTER DONATION - The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently received a large and much-needed donation of assorted pet food, treats, toys, and cleaning supplies. The donations were collected by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group, who recently teamed up with Bay Shore Pathmark to collect donations from the public and raise extra funds. Along with the material donations, a monetary donation of $350 was collected and will be used to purchase specialty foods and items for animals with special needs residing at the shelter.

Rowing Toward A Championship

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.
