By spring 2021, the East Islip School District’s music students and teachers had completed half of a school year without an authentic performance experience and were looking for hope. Guided by Robert Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages, the administrators and music teachers discussed the idea of a safe, outdoor spring concert series, and made the necessary plans and adjustments in regard to repertoire and instruction. To compensate for the loss of sound at these outdoor events, SDE Productions assisted with the sound system to ensure attendees could hear every note. The concert series began on May 11 at John F. Kennedy Elementary

School, with band and orchestra students performing in small groups on the blacktop while the community listened on the field nearby. On May 13, the musicians of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School took the “stage” on their own campus, divided into groups by instrumental section, allowing the attending families to hear the individual nuances of each instrument. At East Islip High School, challenges arose due to a busy schedule of athletics teams, construction and outside practices, but a May 12 concert by the school’s band, orchestra and chorus students was successfully presented at the old football field behind the fieldhouse.

This was followed by a final May 17 event at which the high school’s honorslevel ensembles had the chance to share their last performance with the community. “Our families had tears in their eyes and expressed how happy they were to see their children perform,” Wottawa said. “I could not be prouder of the dedication of our teachers, custodians, buildings and grounds crew, security officers, and administrators – and the patience of our parents and students – as we navigated uncharted waters with an outdoor concert series. We can count our blessings that our music program overcame each challenge with grace and perseverance.”

Local Non-Proﬁt Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the

right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). Senior Day at Timberpoint Golf Course on May 19. Each golfer was greeted by family and friends as they came off the ninth hole and presented with a bouquet of flowers and a poster signed by their teammates. After

the match, the seniors and their parents shared a cake on the course terrace. “This was a great way for the girls to end their senior days and years of playing varsity golf,” said coach Judith Fischer.

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will

be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need.
