The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

I love flowers, because they are as colorful as butterflies. I love the green grass, beautiful birds, terrific trees and the sweet smell of spring. The songs the birds sing is an orchestra of beauty, as they gorgeously tweet away. Spring is lovely and I hope every one can enjoy this pretty, dazzling Springtime. Over the past few years, I’ve experienced many wonderful things. These events and facets of my upbringing have helped to shape the man I am today, as well as the man I hope to become. For the past five summers, I’ve been a busboy at a busy restaurant on Fire Island. Now, as I seek to develop my professional career, I am focused on my resume. Sure, being a busboy pays well, but it really isn’t great resume material. I’ve struggled with the idea of moving on in search of something that sounds a little more impressive. My old job is a part of my childhood. It is going to be hard to leave that all behind. I know that we must all move on at some point, but the memories I’ve made keep my tied to that

establishment. I can remember my first days there and feeling the connection with my coworkers. In subsequent summers, these coworkers have come and gone, but the impact they have left on me will live on. I know that they have changed me for the better, and that working as a busboy during high school has instilled in me work ethic and determination. I’m excited to move on and build my career. I know that I am going to be doing big things - and I can thank that little restaurant for putting it all in motion. I am confident that working there was the right choice, even though it didn’t feel like it at times. As I move forward in my life, I hope to never forget where I came from.

Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Melissa Coppola, Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for a lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research.The walk helps bring awareness of scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the Tri-State area – for which there is no known cause and no cure. The prewalk registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and

Toys Bring Joy Dedicated students in Brian Heyanka’s eighthgrade classes at East Islip Middle School recently used their technology skills to manufacture over 75 toys that were donated to North Shore LIJ-Southside Hospital to bring joy to sick children. The students started the project by conducting research in the computer lab. Each of 15 groups of students chose an age demographic that they wanted to design a unique toy for, which included chalk iPhones, miniature helicopters, bowling, springboard basketball shot, paddle ball, whale-

shaped crayon holders, stacking rings, magnetic fishing games, tic-tac-toe, labyrinths, maze games, peg board games, knock hockey, and laser-engraved puzzles and matching games. The eighth-graders created their own detailed drawings including measurements, materials and other important information regarding their designs. They learned about manufacturing techniques in order to mass-produce the toys, creating templates and using tools and machines that included a band saw, scroll saws, belt and disk

Immersing themselves in the mass production process over several weeks, they even found ways to increase their efficiency and made sure every toy was ready for delivery to Southside. “My students were able to think critically and use problem solving skills while learning about volunteerism, demonstrating good character and truly making a difference in their community,” said Heyanka.

In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest

(SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However, these scenarios could be quite different. A person’s survival rate increases by more than double when CPR is initiated immediately. In situations where CPR and defibrillation is provided within five to seven minutes, the survival rate is as high as 35-40 percent. The bystander can no

longer be the bystander; he or she must become the FIRST RESPONDER! To acknowledge CPR & AED week, CPR123 is offering the community FREE “Hands Only CPR” and Healthy Living Classes throughout the month!
