Prom is a teenage rite of passage. Prom night provides one more exciting adventure in a school experience that likely started with preschool jitters and will soon culminate with graduates receiving their high school diplomas.

Even though they may appear to be young adults, teens still may have meltdowns or impulse control issues when things don’t go their way. While teens may be focused on fashion and fun, parents may be wondering what they can do to steer their sons and daughters in the right direction. Set A Budget The pandemic has affected supply chains and has contributed to increased prices on all types of consumer goods, so you may find that prom attire and accessories will cost more this year. Figure out what you can afford to contribute to the prom, and ask your teenager to pitch in. If your child is footing some of the bill, there may be a greater willingness to corral spending. One way to save money is to rent a gown/tuxedo rather than

Suffolk County Auxiliary Vice President Joanne Johnson and Suffolk County American Legion Commander Roby Johnson all addressed the patriotic gathering, as did Superintendent Dr. Dennis O’Hara, whose son is deployed overseas.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services non-profit organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. They have been helping others for 93 years! Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic Priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn, who was looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. He opened a summer camp in Wading River that would eventually transition to a year-round residential treatment facility serving thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities. Little Flower has proudly adapted to address the unmet needs of those in their community by continuing to develop new programs and services. Their corporate headquarters and Suffolk County campus is still located in Wading River, however they also have a NYC campus, which is their flagship office in Brooklyn, along with ten residences across Queens and Long Island for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

The coalition will help fund critical services and offer events and resources directly in the communities served by Little Flower. Current members of the coalition include Amcor, Dime Community Bank, Fluent, Inc., Northwell Health and Tradeweb. “During the pandemic, Little Flower continued to operate without disruption to ensure the safety and well-being of hundreds of children in foster care, youth in residential treatment care, and adults with developmental disabilities. The Caring Acts Coalition will provide much needed support to those served by Little Flower, their families, our staff, and the local community,” shared Corinne Hammons, Little Flower’s President & CEO. In 2019, Little Flower expanded to welcome St. Johns’ Residence for Boys as an affiliate partner. FOOD DONATION PROJECT/HEALTH FAIR - St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip will host a Food Donation Project/Health Fair on Saturday, June 11, from 8:30 to 1:30, at the church located at 754 Montauk Highway (across from the Oconee Diner). On Saturday, June 11, from 8:30 to 1:30, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway (across from the Oconee Diner), will host a Food Donation Project/Health Fair. Donations can be dropped off and you will receive a ticket to enter the Health Fair. Participants can peruse the nutrition table created by South Shore University Hospital, whose motto is, “Connecting health and nutrition to improve your overall wellness.” They will address such things as healthy eating on a budget, healthy eating for seniors, healthy summertime recipes, and more. People will also be able to get their blood pressure checked by registered nurses; get their glucose monitored by members of Stony Brook University’s Physician Assistant Department; and get a free wellness gift from Little Angels Center. Stony Brook’s Physician Assistant Dept. is no stranger to the St. Mark’s food donation projects since 2020. When inquired about their energetic and faithful activity in these food drives, we were told that “as health professionals, we have to be aware also of social, psychological and

U.S. Army Brings Tech Truck To East Islip High School
U.S. Army representatives visited East Islip High School on May 11, bringing an interactive tractor trailer designed to showcase STEAM-related initiatives that the military has to offer, both current as well as conceptual designs for the future. These vehicles are not
only used as promotional and recruiting tools, but also to enhance public awareness. Participating students had the chance to travel through the interactive truck and learn about military robotics, drones and future military gear and technologies. “This mobile exhibit was
a great opportunity for my robotics students to see some of the practical applications of the things they are learning about in class such as engineering, coding and robotics design and development,” technology teacher James Connell said.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each
year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them.
