Legislator Flotteron Honors Town Of Islip Employee On 43 Years Of Service

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Robert Moses Kuri, for his 43 years with the Town of Islip Community Development Agency (CDA), which had been established several years prior to his joining. The CDA has introduced many community-oriented programs designed to provide a better quality of life for those who live, work, invest and play in the Township of Islip. Over the years, Mr. Kuri was committed to actively participate in producing and promoting; implement and nurture community revitalization efforts, as well as work on the development of affordable and sustainable housing, technological advances and innovation in home construction, including public service and capital improvement projects. As the Affordable Housing Director, he has successfully acquired, sold and financed more than 1,000 properties and arranged more than 20 housing lotteries for the development of affordable housing for first-time homebuyers. He also had the distinction of serving in various capacities

toward the creation of affordable housing communities and made way for a commercial development project to stimulate the economic growth and home buying opportunities in Bay

Shore, Brentwood and Central Islip, earning him professional certificates of accomplishments, public service recognition awards, SC proclamations and TOI citations.

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the Art League of Long Island is proud to bring back the Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. Now in its 53rd year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers looking to purchase unique, one-of-a-kind art and craft to display in their homes or to wear as fashion statements.

More than 80 artists and craftspeople will show and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, photography, fiber art, wearable art and more. Prizes will be awarded to exhibitors who

demonstrate superior artistry and craftsmanship.

The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, family-friendly hands-on activities, and live music. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, the winner to be announced the following week. Proceeds will benefit the Art League of Long Island, a not-for-profit visual arts organization serving the community since 1955. The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

East Islip Senior Louis Attard Wins Embry-Riddle Scholarship

East Islip High School senior Louis Attard was recently awarded the EmbryRiddle/ VEX Robotics Scholarship. He will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s campus in Daytona, Florida this fall, pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering.

The purpose of the EmbryRiddle VEX Scholarship is to allow VEX and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to recognize high school students who have displayed significant achievements in education and leadership during their high school career. For assessing candidates, the scholarship selection committee reviews academic records, standardized test scores, GPA, class placement,

cocurricular and leadership activities, and community service. The scholarship is awarded for first-year college students who plan on attending Embry-Riddle’s residential campuses starting in the fall semester of that year.

Attard was selected to receive a $6,000 scholarship based on his participation and involvement in VEX Robotics and his school’s robotics competition team. He spent the last two years as the lead mechanic on East Islip’s robotics team and successfully participated in local and state competitions including the Southern Regional State championships.

As part of his application, Attard was also required to

submit an essay in which he was asked to highlight how he envisioned EmbryRiddle and how the VEX Robotics competitions have assisted him in identifying and providing a foundation for his ideal career path.

“As a member of all his respective classes and clubs, Louis has excelled and has gone well above and beyond.,” robotics and technology education teacher James Connell said. “He leads by example and has been a definite asset during his time here in East Islip. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Louis and I’m sure he’ll have great success in his future career as an aeronautical engineer.”

Stop The Cycle Of Stroke By Raising Critical Funds To Further Research And Education

The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association - the leading voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health for all, invites Long Island companies, communities and individuals to stop the cycle of stroke by raising critical funds to further research and education through CycleNation.

CycleNation is scheduled for Thursday, June 8 at Push Fitness Club of

Melville, 515 Broadhollow Road in Melville. Check-in begins at 3:00pm and the ride starts at 4:00pm.

“It’s a great honor to chair the 2023 Long Island CycleNation event,” said Mr. Hudson. “The CycleNation experience helps us raise funds to support critical, lifesaving research to help defeat stroke in our community.”

As 2023 CycleNation chair, Jason Hudson, Chief Executive Officer at

Cornerstone Land Abstract will lead a team of top Long Island executives that will work to recruit companies and organizations to take part in the CycleNation movement. The efforts will culminate on June 8 where teams will ride to raise awareness and funds to further the work of the American Stroke Association and the American Heart Association.

“What’s exciting about the CycleNation movement

is, it’s not just a one-day event,” said Mr. Hudson. “Participating companies and organizations become part of something bigger. We’re not only making a significant impact on the overall health of our community through our fundraising efforts but, this initiative is designed to improve employee engagement, wellness and overall workplace health”.

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United

States and the leading cause of disability in older age. Each year approximately 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke. While approximately 80% of those who have a stroke will survive, the majority of these will remain with some degree of physical impairment or disability. Research shows that up to 80% of strokes may be prevented. Getting the recommended amount of physical activity is linked to lower risk of diseases,

stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression.

Lodestar Children’s Services Recognized For Their Youth Programs

Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Lodestar Children’s Services, a nonprofit organization established in 2016, in Suffolk County, and has since expanded to include all of Long Island, Queens & Brooklyn, at the “Then &

Now” fundraiser at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. Their services provide mental health care to children ages 0-21 years old and their caregivers in the home, hopefully keeping these children out of institutions. It is

believed by doing so it will give them a better chance at long- lasting results when they can learn in the safety and comfort of their own homes and communities.

Hockey Team Honored For Historic Bid To Nationals

HOCKEY TEAM HONORED FOR HISTORIC BID TO NATIONALS - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board honored the East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team at the May Town Board Meeting for their history-making season.Last year, the Chiefs Hockey Team made club history when they won Gold at the prestigious CAN/ AM Championship in Lake Placid. This year, they made club history by securing a place competing at the 2023 Chipotle-USA Hockey High School National Championships in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Islip Town Board honored the East Islip Chiefs Hockey Team at the May Town Board Meeting for their history-making season.

Last year, the Chiefs Hockey Team made club history when they won Gold at the prestigious CAN/AM Championship in Lake Placid. This year, they made club history by

securing a place competing at the 2023 ChipotleUSA Hockey High School National Championships in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Under the leadership of Head Coach James Sutton

and Assistant Coaches Nicholas Campo, Joe D’Addario, Rob Bentrewicz, and Eric Miklich; the Chiefs competed in the Division II USA Bracket of the Tournament, prior to being

eliminated in the final preliminary game against Prep Hockey.

“To have come so far and made club history speaks to the team’s talent, dedication and discipline, and our

entire community is proud to see Islip’s own reach this level of excellence in the hockey arena,” said Supervisor Carpenter. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!
