The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). Islip High School students recently worked on an exciting project with technology teacher Jesse Eilbeck, constructing personalized epoxy skateboard decks. “The processes for this assignment included designing the deck, cutting out their design, coloring, spray painting, and finally epoxy,” said Eilbeck. “The epoxy itself

was the main idea behind this project, because it allows the students to take those finished skateboard decks and put them into use. The next part is to attach trucks and wheels, the hardware component, and for them to grip tape the decks of their boards so they can go out and enjoy them, skate around on them, do what kids do.”

Being able to create art for kids in other countries is a really great concept because although there may be a language barrier, it’s cool how the art can bring us all together, and I think everyone in the Society was really appreciative of the opportunity.”

Islip High School’s Business Academy students were recently treated to a visit from Vincent Daniel, the real-life stock analyst portrayed in the 2015 film “The Big Short” and the 2010 Michael Lewis book it was based on, “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine.” Both stories showed how Daniel predicted the housing market crash of 2007. Daniel began by discussing his college accounting studies at Binghamton University, his, career trajectory and possible job pathways. “The goal in college for me was to come out and get a job, and I wanted to be in business, so accounting was best way at the time,” he said. “My goal was to get my CPA. But I hated what I did. I loved what accounting taught me, but I always wanted to get to Wall Street.”

After two years of working as an accountant, he shifted to Oppenheimer and Co., researching financial service companies that specialized in mortgages. It was there that his analysis of flawed subprime mortgages led to the events depicted in the book and film. Daniel later worked at Keefe, Bruyette, & Woods; was a partner, executive director and financial analyst at FrontPoint; and cofounded Seawolf Capital, where he served as head analyst. In describing what he does today, Daniel likened his job as a portfolio manager to being a professional gambler. “I make investments on stocks and hopefully produce a return for my investors,” he said. Before diving into a question-and-answer session, Daniel left the eager students with solid

career advice, saying, “If you remember anything I said today, it’s this: Choose a profession that you love. One of the greatest things in life is to wake up and want to go to work. So, whatever you want to do, do that. Secondly, take public speaking classes and get over the fear of speaking. It’s very important to communicate and understand how to communicate. Three, if you want to be in my profession and get on Wall Street, you’re going to have to learn how to program and code, and if you want to analyze companies, learn how to use Excel. If you want to do what I do, model out a company. Look at their financial statements in the past and project forward. Invest in them, see how it feels to make money, and more importantly, see what it’s like to lose money.”

Honor Society Inductees In a night of candles and kudos, Islip High School held its annual Honor Society Induction Ceremony on April 16 in the school auditorium, welcoming parents and friends to recognize the newest inductees. Valedictorian Victoria Arthus and salutatorian Matthew Southard led
