I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress that comes with waiting for

your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter

grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

East Islip High School officially unveiled a new 3.5-kilowatt photovoltaic solar system last July, a gridconnected system installed in the school’s courtyard over a period of two weeks. Over the course of the 2012-2013 school year, the system has served to educate students on how solar power is generated and its benefits in reducing the use of fossil fuel. The solar panels continue to collect the sun’s energy and convert it to DC power, which is then converted to AC power by microinverters and exported back to the grid. “The interactive PV system includes a data acquisition package that allows students, teachers and community members to access real-time system performance over the Internet,” said Solar Dad and Sons President Ken Sanger. “This live working resource is designed to promote student and community understanding of renewable energy.” Sanger’s company installed the system with the help of partners such as Direct Grid Technologies, Energy Inc., Eragy, Home Performance Technologies, Solartech Renewables, Tough Trac and DiGiovanna Bros. Landscaping, all of whom donated their hardware or services to enable the photovoltaic solar system’s installation. Among those attending the unveiling last summer were Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, Home Performance Technologies President Mark Gunthner and East Islip’s Superintendent of Schools John J. Finello. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo even sent East Islip a congratulatory

letter regarding the solar system. Sustainable Long Island was among the organizations in attendance. “We were delighted to attend East Islip High School’s unveiling of the photovoltaic solar system,” said a SLI representative, “and we are thrilled to be partnering with East Islip High School to provide

Sanger attributes much of the impetus behind the system to Israel Malinowitzer, the director of East Islip’s Career Academy program. “This project is an outgrowth of Mr. Malinowitzer’s vision of using technology as a medium for connecting the school system and businesses in the area with the Career Academy at East Islip High School,” said Sanger. “Solar Dad and Sons has a longstanding partnership with Mr. Malinowitzer in which we support the students with new and engaging subjects, and this solar PV system installation accomplishes that goal.” Since the beginning of this school year, the photovoltaic solar system has provided a steady stream of information for students. “I’m proud to report that the system has been performing flawlessly,” said Sanger, who calls it “a gift that keeps on giving.” He added, “This solar PV system is producing energy from the sun for the high school to utilize, but it’s more than that. It is a hands-on experience and an educational tool for the students now and in the future.” Sanger also shared his knowledge of and experience with solar PV at the school’s Earth Day event this April. “I was invited to communicate the growing need for renewable energy and to encourage students to think of questions and spark curiosity regarding solar energy solutions,” he explained. “The students impressed me with their passion and concern for our energy needs now and in the future.” The East Islip photovoltaic system is just the beginning for Sanger. “Our goal is to stimulate interest and confidence in the use of solar photovoltaic systems for a wide variety of applications by creating successful partnerships such as this,” he said. “Next year we are planning to expand this education tool beyond the school walls to the Town of Islip community. VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center is holding its 18th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 17th at the beautiful Bellport Country Club in Bellport. The day begins with Lunch and Registration at 11:00 a.m., and the Shotgun Start is at 1 p.m. This year’s honorees are Kevin G. Harney, Partner, Principal and CFO of Stalco Construction and Mrs. Carol Lenz, Community Volunteer and Philanthropist. Mr. Harney has led Stalco Construction since its founding in 1992. He oversees Stalco’s daily operations, bids, and marketing. Kevin manages the company with a deep concern for its clients, employees, and community, and ensures that Stalco is one of the most familyfriendly construction organizations in the nation. He is also a Cofounder of Contractors For Kids, a non-profit supporting seriously ill children and their families. Mrs. Lenz has devoted her life to being a teacher and a guidance counselor, working with young people from preschool to high school and touching many lives along the way. In retirement, Carol has been using her time to support organizations such as Brookhaven Hospice and Parkinson’s research, as well as the Play it Safe Program, helping young children learn to make safe choices in their lives. She continues to perform

at assisted living facilities in the role of Ms. Sr. New York, 2004. All proceeds from this Golf Classic support the work of VIBS as we strive to Create Futures Free of Violence.
