slip Middle School Science Olympiad students in the district’s academically gifted EXCEL program earned three medals at the Science Olympiad’s state competition, held in April in upstate Syracuse. Islip’s team was one of just 35 middle school Science Olympiad teams that made it to the state level of competition, out of an initial field of 233. Islip qualified for the state tournament by winning nine medals and third place overall.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that

is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the

M-FIT program to reach more veterans and their family members, expand partnerships and work towards removing the stigma associated with mental health needs in the military. Of the more than 700,000 veterans nationally, Long Island is the home to approximately 175,000. M-FIT is designed to build resiliency among returning service members and their families and to

help veterans cope with the stress and trauma of their service to our country for reintegration into their community and family life. “We are so grateful to the Long Island Community Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner agencies to bring about increased support for our veterans mental health needs.” says Executive Director Steve

obstacles to friendship. Work, school, girls and other friends can all drive a wedge between best friends. I’ve had it happen to me, and it sucks. I don’t want to come off as some kid whining about friendship - I just want to put it in perspective. Life moves fast, and it is important to keep friendships and other relationships strong. I hope to have all of my friends with me as I grow up. Without a doubt, I can say that my friends have shaped who I am. They are invaluable, and the source of my happiest moments. Throughout this upcoming summer, I hope to rekindle old friendships, build upon current ones and make new friends! It’s going to be a great summer, and I’m very excited to spend it with the people who have always been there for me.

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

I’ve been on summer vacation for two weeks. Since coming back to Long Island, my experiences have really put life into perspective. The people who I spent time with on a regular basis throughout high school are no longer my close friends. Time has created a gap between us. It is amazing how a few months of college can change people so much. I’m not saying it is a bad thing, because it really doesn’t matter all that much. The people who really count - my family and lifelong friends will always be there for me. I know that when I need them, all I have to do is reach out. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

East Islip’s Art & Jazz Festival returned for a second year of celebrating the creativity of East Islip High School and East Islip Middle School art and music students. Sponsored by the eiMAPS support organization, the April 30th evening event filled the district’s Early Childhood Center with aural and visual excitement, drawing large crowds eager to recognize the dedication of these

Middle Schoolers Medal Islip Middle School Science Olympiad students in the district’s academically gifted EXCEL program earned three medals at the Science Olympiad’s state competition, held in April in upstate Syracuse. Islip’s team was one of just 35 middle school Science Olympiad teams that made it to the state level of competition, out of an initial field of 233.

Islip qualified for the state tournament by winning nine medals and third place overall at the Eastern Long Island Region event in February. Julia Hormann and Matthew Southard earned second place in the category of Crime Busters; Daniel Canales and Gregory Warnokowski won fifth place in Road Scholar; and Brian Abair and Darienne Rogers won

fifth in Wheeled Vehicle. Earning honorable mentions were Kerry Monaghan and Southard, who came in seventh in Disease Detectives, and Olivia Bouler and Sofia Rubinson, who came in 10th with RoboCross. “This was a great season for the EXCEL Science Olympiad team and I am so proud to be their coach,” said EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson. COMMITMENT TO CLEAN UP - The Sisters and staff members of the Daughters of Wisdom show a strong commitment to a clean environment through the regular care of their Keep Islip Clean adopted spot at the Maple Street Dock in Islip.
