Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School held College and Career Readiness Week from April 12-16, focusing on expanding students’ awareness of their personal interests, passions, skills and strengths, and providing them with the chance to explore different career opportunities. Each class participated in different college and career exploration activities. Second graders learned all about college and used their imagination to create their own colleges and mascots. Third graders explored their passions and interests, and applied them to the world of work, completing an “I will change the world in my future career” activity. Fourth graders learned about different career clusters by participating in a career necktie activity. they selected which hue to color in their ties. At the conclusion, the fourth graders noted which colors they used the most throughout the activity and were placed in a career cluster to explore different types of jobs. Fifth graders learned about John Holland’s six personality types and completed a career interest inventory. They discovered which personality type they fit into most and explored a variety of career options, then completed a career research pennant on a job that interested them. Throughout the week, Commack Road’s students participated in a schoolwide scavenger hunt, which featured college terminology and questions about the college and career experiences of the school’s teachers and staff. Scavenger hunt clues were placed around the halls and incorporated into announcements. Classes who completed the scavenger hunt were entered into a drawing to

receive a class prize. The victorious class – Kristen Pacello’s third graders – won sunglasses with a note attached saying, “My future’s so bright I have to wear shades.” “While there are many years before students must make a decision about their future, college and career exploration is a K-12 process and a vital part of students educational experiences,” school counselor Sara Comiskey said. “College and career development activities provide students with opportunities to create personal and academic goals, and help them reach their fullest potential.”

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Three East Islip HS Artists Chosen As “Long Island’s Best” Three of East Islip High School’s most talented art students – Robert Camlet, Mia Oquendo and Sarah Piccinini – were chosen to be featured in the 25th annual “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” exhibition, which runs at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington from April 17 to May 23. The three students, all National Art Honor Society members enrolled in teacher Dan Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement Art and Design class, were among just 83 artists selected out of 331 submissions from over 50 high schools. The show can be seen online at heckscher.org/ LIBest2021 beginning on

April 24. The Heckscher will also be hosting a series of virtual events in addition to the in-person show, including a virtual reception and awards ceremony on May 1 via Instagram Live, as well as an artist meet-up on May 20 on Zoom. Camlet’s piece, “Castaway,” is a digitally manipulated photograph that depicts the artist with a halo-like ring around his head and glowing eyes, as well as swimmers in the sky that almost evaporate into the horizon, mimicking a flock of birds. Oquendo’s work, “Personal Still-Life,” showcases her technical drawing skills, precision, and attention to detail. Piccinini’s piece,

“Decomposing,” is a largescale mixed media drawing on cardboard. Butterflies were made with tracing paper, mushrooms and frogs were intricately drawn with graphite and the ribs of the figure were conveyed through cutting into the cardboard surface. “This show is exciting,” Figliozzi said. “It was our first year applying, and my fellow teacher Heather Toomey and I are so happy that Rob, Sarah and Mia were selected. This is a huge honor for these three and I am really proud of all of them. They have been working hard all year, developing their body of artwork, and the three pieces they have in the show are evidence of that.”

Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach. • Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. East Islip Counselors Celebrate The Class Of 2021 In conjunction with the Class of 2021’s Senior Spirit Week, East Islip High School counselors celebrated Moving On Monday on May 3 with a group of enthusiastic seniors. Students were encouraged to wear

apparel and make signs celebrating their future plans, including college, military, trade schools, employment and travel. The seniors were invited to be photographed in the school courtyard, creating a senior slideshow

commemorating their post-high school plans. “We were thrilled to see how many seniors chose to participate in this celebratory event,” counselor Jessica Pignataro said.
