Music Festival Takes Over Country Club

Thousands turned out for the Town of Islip’s second annual Festival on the Fairway at Holbrook Country Club. The weather was picture perfect for the day-long festival which was enjoyed by children of all ages, and adults alike. The festivities continued throughout the day, with free Arts and Crafts; Mini Golf; Hole in One; Lasso Challenge; Cornhole;

touch-a-truck; food, beverage and shopping vendors; Petting Zoo & Pony Rides; Line Dance instruction; music by Southbound; This is Garth and more.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day. There was something for everyone to enjoy, whether it be Line Dancing, a Lasso challenge, tasting delicious food, or just

sitting back, listening to Country Music and taking it all in, there were smiles wherever you turned,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Special ‘thank you’ to our wonderful team at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs for their tremendous hard work putting this together for the residents of our Town,” said the Supervisor.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen

soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-inchief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the

holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History. com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

BRIGHT YOUNG MINDS EXPLORE CAREER OPTIONS - Representatives from the Town of Islip’s Planning Department and Environmental Conservation were invited to join staff and students at East Islip High School for STEAM Day. The Career Day type event gave students the opportunity to learn more about the many careers in STEAM related fields. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was on hand for the event, where she encouraged children to explore a career in public service. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to research careers in STEAM related fields, including planning, development and engineering, right here in the Town of Islip,” said the Supervisor.

Gabriella Schwalm To Play Soccer For Keuka College

East Islip High School senior Gabriella Schwalm recently signed a national letter of intent to play soccer this fall for Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York. She plans to major in occupational therapy.

An outside defensive back, Schwalm is a twoyear member of the girls varsity soccer team after spending her sophomore year on the junior varsity squad and her freshman year on the girls varsity cross-country team. A two-sport athlete, she has been a member of the varsity winter and spring track teams for all four years of high school, and received Scholar-Athlete recognition each year. Additionally, Schwalm has played travel soccer for the LGN Soccer Club in Stony Brook for eight years, and has worked for several years as an assistant referee

for the Long Island Soccer Referee Association.

In academics, Schwalm is a member of her school’s

National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. She also participates in East Islip’s SADD club.

Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member

Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.

Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.

That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-

based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.

Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.

Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of

seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.

Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.

“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”

When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s

side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in. In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.
