QUALITY HOME GROWN FLOWERS SINCE 1985 • Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined local school superintendents and Islip Public Safety officials to discuss the rise of gang activity nationwide, and how it affects all hamlets and school districts across
Long Island. The Public Safety Department made a presentation to those assembled, and highlighted the recruitment strategies of local gangs. Afterward, a discussion was held to identify ways that school
districts can take steps to reduce and prevent gang influence among student populations. “Recent events demand a full response from all those in a position to make a difference,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I hope today’s presentation and discussion lead to tangible solutions that can help those who are threatened by gang activity. School officials can be the ‘eyes and ears’ for law enforcement who are working to combat gang recruitment efforts.”

The Summer Swing Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

The East Islip High School’s National Honor Society sponsored a clothing drive to raise funds for Kyle Engblom and the NBIA Disorders Association. Members Rachel Florenz, Christine Llewellyn and Victoria Mayer organized the event as their Leadership Project. Honor Society members canvassed the entire community with fliers, asking people to bring any items to the high school parking lot on April 28th.
Engblom, who has a rare disease known as FAHNFA2H, joined the NHS the entire morning and afternoon as more than 6,000 pounds of clothing and shoes donations came pouring in. Carecycle, a clothing recycling company, will donate 20 cents per pound of the total amount raised to the NBIA Association. Founded in 1996, the nonprofit NBIADA is dedicated to families affected by NBIA, a rare
genetic, neurological movement disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration of the nervous system due to iron deposits in the brain. The NBIADA’s goals include raising funds to further research on the disease, providing emotional support to families, educating the public and monitoring and informing about ongoing NBIA research.

PAYING TRIBUTE - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi stopped by to thank the men, women and children, who volunteered their time to help beautify the Vietnam Memorial Garden at Islip Town Hall West and pay tribute to those members of the armed forces who served this country in the Vietnam War.
Most people understand the importance of a clean environment, but the employees at Paramount Land, Inc. in Islip took this Earth Day concept and turned it into positive action. The company, which specializes in title insurance, teamed up with Keep Islip Clean for the national Earth Day events that are collectively known as the Great American Cleanup. Paramount Land employees are committed KIC volunteers who have cleaned up Main Street in Islip every year for a decade. This year, twelve staff members took the material provided by KIC, stepped out of the Main
Street office and donated their lunch hour on a beautiful May afternoon for a litter cleanup. The group filled eight bags with litter by the end of the project. “I’ve been with Paramount Land, Inc. for 10 years and participated in the KIC cleanup every year since the beginning, said Kelly Dunbar, Esq. She added that “one of the retailers on Main Street expressed appreciation for the cleanup and noted our commitment to the project. Although our company supports a number of charitable events, it’s particularly nice to get outside this time of year and see immediate results.”
Another Paramount Land employee, Jennifer Ludewig, noted that “we work for an amazing organization that allows us to not only do our jobs but encourages us to focus on volunteering and supporting the community in which we work.” A Main Street often lends character to a community, so this cleanup effected many Islip residents. “Paramount Land, Inc. is a good neighbor to the community. Our town is more attractive and the environment healthier thanks to their continued good work,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC.

Honored for Volunteerism East Islip Middle School seventh-grader Johnathan Yankus was recently honored for exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence and President’s Volunteer Service Award by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He was recognized for this achievement at the April 20th board of education meeting. Presented annually by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, the Spirit of Community Awards honor young people across America for outstanding volunteer service. The Certificate of Excellence is granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants, while the President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes Americans of all ages who volunteer significant amounts of time to serving their communities. Yankus volunteers at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, where his
favorite assignment is working in the Butterflies, Bugs & Birds exhibit. “Johnathan encourages the birds to land on him so people can see them close up and the visitors can have the birds walk on them,” said guidance counselor Peter Ludlow. “He also works with the Keep Islip Clean program where he helps to keep the marina and its beach clean. He is sad to report that he has picked up over 300 cigarette butts in a single day.”

Fine Arts Honoree David Gomez, an East Islip High School freshman studying drawing under teacher Daniel Figliozzi, attended a scholarship competition in March at Huntington Fine Arts, and won second place, proudly walking away with a $500 scholarship to attend advanced art classes at the prestigious Greenlawn art school. HFA’s scholarship competition provides freshmen, sophomore and junior students on Long Island with the opportunity to
draw the live figure. “This life drawing technique and process is challenging, but essential for further collegiate study in fine arts,” said Figliozzi “I was very stressed knowing that I was going to participate in this competition,” said Gomez. “However, when I got there, it turned out to be wonderful place and I really enjoyed it.” An excited Gomez returned to school eager to share his experience. “After the competition, I was somewhat sure that
I had done well because the instructors were very complimentary of my work,” he said. “After learning that I had won the second-place prize, I was happy and proud of myself. I am excited to take the painting class there this spring and summer.” The win for Gomez was no surprise to his teacher. “When I saw David’s first drawing this year, I immediately knew he would do well in this competition,” said Figliozzi. “He is a tremendous talent and will do wonderful things with
his art…and he’s only just begun.” Gomez has always loved art. “I like art because it allows me to create new ideas and imaginative things,” he said. “I am excited to continue to take art at East Islip, broadening my skills and learning new media.” Gomez plans on continuing to broaden his practice by taking courses in AP art, electronic illustration and drawing in the coming years at East Islip.
