drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. On Thursday, April 26th, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. hosted a ceremony at the Yaphank Correctional Facility to officiate the Sheriff’s Office first group of uniformed Chaplains in its more than 330 year history of continuous service to the county’s residents. Sponsored by LIU Post, the competition asks students to create works of art that are 12 inches wide by 12 inches high. Chosen students

included Caitlin Breitenbecker, Kaylin Cuba, Julia Lambert, Christopher Palmer, Gia Piazza and Alicia Rodriguez for photography; and Eliza Channing, Hailee Cornell, Sabine Gebhard and Kevin Mesa for electronic illustration. “I’ve never had my artwork shown in a college exhibit, and it’s an honor,”

said Mesa. “The students selected for this exhibit have such excellent pieces, and I am so proud of their artwork,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “It is such a wonderful opportunity that LIU Post provides, exhibiting high school students in their gallery space.”

Gelato and a Show East Islip High School’s Italian-language students recently enjoyed a threepart field trip celebrating the language and culture of Italy, beginning with a visit to Caffe Italia in Deer Park to taste fresh gelato. The students tasted a wide variety of gelato flavors as well as biscotti, pastries and cappuccino. “It was like we were in Italy,” said Emily Gerde,

one of several language teachers accompanying the students. “It is the most delicious and fresh gelato you will taste on Long Island.” The next stop was the Jamaica Performing Arts Center in Queens, where the students took in an interactive performance by Incanto Productions, sponsored by the Italian American Committee on

Education. The interactive show, “I Sette Mondi,” incorporated dancing, trapeze artists, and spoken and sung Italian, with audience participation geared toward different levels of language learners. The day was completed with a trip to Heckscher Park in Huntington, where the students ate lunch and enjoyed the beautiful setting.

Amanda Kreush, a star senior bowler for East Islip High School, signed a national letter of intent on May 4th to play for Molloy College in Rockville Centre his fall. She plans to major in early childhood education while bowling for the Lions. Kreush, who joined the varsity team as a seventh-grader and served as captain of the Lady Redmen during her junior and senior years, had a remarkable career at East Islip. During her tenure, the team went undefeated as league champions for six consecutive years as well as winning state and county championships. Kreush won the Section XI sportsmanship award twice, and earned AllCounty, All-League, Scholar-Athlete and Minds in Motion recognition. Her academic honors include three years as secretary of the Class of 2018 and membership in the National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.
