The art and music departments of East Islip High School and East Islip Middle School presented the first Art & Jazz Festival on the evening of April 29th, supported by the East Islip Music and Arts Program Support organization, known as eiMAPS. The event, held at the former Early Childhood Center, brought together artists from both schools for student demonstrations

The weekend of Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st will be bursting with dancing and marching. at free-admission, family-friendly, rain-orshine extravaganzas in Brentwood. Saturday’s 1st Annual Salsa Street Festival will be held from 12 noon to 7 p.m., on Suffolk Avenue beginning at the Brentwood Road/ Washington Avenue intersection and extending westward for four blocks to Madison Avenue. In addition to a dominoes tournament, children’s activities, and tented art exhibits displaying works by some of our area’s finest artists, the Festival will feature a steady stream of rising and established salsa ensembles, including opening with Mambo Loco (undoubtedly the busiest band on Long Island); the premier salsa orchestra

Johnny Ray & Salsa Con Clase; two-time Grammy winner Ray De La Paz; and closing with Tito Puente Jr., son of the legendary salsa star and a world-class performer in his own right. Sunday’s 48th Annual Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade will kick off at noon, on Fifth Avenue beginning just north of the Southern State Parkway and continuing northward 1½ miles to 4th Avenue. With some three hours of marchers, floats, music and dancers, this event celebrates both the Puerto Rican and other Latino cultures and a future of solidarity and respect among Long Island’s many Latino and other ethnicities. This year’s honorees includes the American Red Cross, and Tito Puente Jr. will appear again, as godfather. The State’s second largest

Brentwood Rocks parade of its kind - the largest is the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade held in Manhattan - at least 50,000 people from throughout Long Island and beyond are expected to attend. These events are hosted by Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, a nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to use the arts in its numerous programs as a means of achieving constructive social change in Long Island’s diverse communities. Part of that mission is to hold free admission cultural events at which diverse audiences come together to see and hear culturally diverse artists. However, these events would not be possible without the help of its friends and supporters, including Home Depot and public funding provided by Suffolk County.

Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

For more than nine years, Islip High School library media specialist Gina Seymour has been helping students embrace their love of literacy while also assisting in providing reference services to both staff and students. Due to her commitment, the Suffolk School Library Association has selected Ms. Seymour as the 2014 School Librarian of the Year. “It is such a great honor to be named Librarian of the Year by the Suffolk School Library Association, such

an esteemed organization of dedicated professionals,” said Ms. Seymour. “The work I do at Islip High School incorporates a commitment to excellence in fostering literacy skills and nurturing students’ interests in literature while supporting Common Core Standards in innovative ways. Receiving this award is a testament to the collaboration among the educators at Islip High School and our close partnership to develop an interactive curriculum that incorporates technology, social media and other new ways to promote a culture of reading.” Amy Jo Southworth, library media specialist at Bay Shore High School, president of the SSLA and the 2013 recipient of the American Association of School Librarians’ Frances Henne Award, nominated Ms. Seymour

Ms. Seymour will be honored as the SSLA’s annual awards dinner and author visit on May 8th at the Beachtree Café in East Islip.

Star Student Congratulations to Michael Doersam, who was named to the Presdient’s List for the Fall 2013 semester at SUNY Cortland. He is a graduate of the Islip High School class of 2012. Michael was also named to the Dean’s List his first two semesters at Cortland. His family is extremely proud of him.

I have made a decision! I’m proud to say that I will be a member of the Villanova University Class of 2018! After years of hard work, my efforts have finally paid off. It has always been my dream to get into a college that would make me happy, and Villanova certainly does that. As one of the top business schools in the country, Villanova is a great selection for my major, Marketing. Even though some people may not have heard of it, my college has a stunning campus located just a few miles outside of Philadelphia. I would not have been able to get into this

prestigious university without pushing myself through high school. Even though my Grade Point Average was not the greatest during my four years at St. John’s, I had one of the highest ACT scores in the grade. Despite being below the top 10%, I believe my scores were high enough to keep me in the competition for ‘Nova. In addition, my extracurricular activities are what really swayed the admissions officers’ decisions. Now that I’ve gotten into my dream school, I look forward to helping my younger brother do the same. After going through the entire process, I feel as

though I am well versed in the art of the application. Although I may not be the smartest, I realize that one’s grades do not define him/her. There is more to the applicant than a number. Holistically, any student can contribute to an outstanding freshman class. With that being said, if anyone has any questions about my decision, or the application process, feel free to e-mail me. Audiences at East Islip High School’s Rydzeski Hall came away impressed at the three sterling performances of this year’s school musical production, Man of La Mancha. Directed by music teachers Bethany Affelt, Christopher Neske, Brian Ortiz and Susan Rydzeski, it was presented by the East Islip Music Department and the For the Kids Foundation from March 20th-22nd. Inspired by the 17th century literary

A play within a play, the musical tells the story of the “mad knight” Don Quixote and his sidekick Sancho Panza, as performed by the writer Cervantes and fellow prisoners of the Spanish

East Islip Middle School’s All-Stars and Lucky Stars life skills classes participated in an Autism Awareness Day activity during their lunch periods on April 23rd, part of the school’s promotion of Autism Awareness Month. During their classes, the life skills students worked to create special blue ribbon bracelets to promote awareness and understanding of autism,

which were handed out by volunteers to students who visited an autism awareness booth set up in the lunchroom. The booth featured facts about autism, information about the EJ Autism Foundation’s Jigsaw Run and tips for peers on how to interact and assist those with autism. “The day was a symbol of the uniqueness of those with autism, but also of the common and shared

East Islip’s boys Varsity Tennis team took all the honors at the Division 2 Individual Tennis Tournament held at East Islip’s courts from May 2nd-3rd. The tournament involved 14 schools from the division, with the top 32 singles players and top 32 doubles teams competing. East Islip’s Frankie Artusa was seeded fifth in the singles draw, and made it

to the all-division round. The doubles teams of Matt Croce and Matt Talamo (seeded No. 1) and Andrew Hegarty and Kevin Nowakowski (seeded No. 2) won all of their matches and went on to compete in the divisional round on May 5th. In an all-East Islip final, Hegarty and Nowakowski outlasted Croce and Talamo by a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, becoming the Division 2

doubles champions. All four players have now earned All-County honors, and will compete in the county tournament on May 10th against the top 16 doubles teams in Suffolk County for the chance to become All-State players. “My congratulations to these four boys for playing an outstanding finals match, and good luck,” said coach Michael Drozd.

Tree Campus USA Stony Brook University has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and e n v i r o n m e n t a l stewardship. SBU earned its recognition through the implementation of five core standards that promote the health of trees and student involvement to improve their forests. The University met the standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee that developed a plan, allotting annual expenditures and brought in community members in the observance of Arbor Day. By introducing a Growing Red Days event last summer, Stony Brook was able to attract students to beautify the

campus while teaching them important planting methodology. Last Arbor Day, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. welcomed New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle to campus to join the University’s Sustainability program as they planted native trees provided by the Department of Environmental Conservation in the North Entrance Meadow as part of a restoration project to replace trees downed by Superstorm Sandy. “These goals and standards helped shape and define the campus’ vision to foster a healthy, safe and beautiful tree population,” said President Stanley. “These initiatives bring together members of the campus community, and inspire them to become more involved throughout the academic year. I very much enjoy seeing our community as

a whole become a better environmental citizen, and I thank those who have led the program and all who participate.” Stony Brook has planted over 2,120 trees, saplings, bushes and perennials in the past two years and since 2006-2007, has planted over 4,925 trees, saplings, bushes and perennials as a part of its planting program. Golf Outing Set Angela’s House will hold its annual golf outing at Indian Hills Golf Club in Northport on June 9th to support its mission of helping care for medically frail children and their families. The event, now in its 12th year, helps cover the cost of medical supplies, equipment and services for children with special health needs. The outing is one of a series of events held annually to support the

agency, which was founded 20 years ago by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela suffered severe brain damage during birth. The outing features putting tee and driving range activities beginning at 9:45 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes of golf on one of Long Island’s most challenging and breathtaking private courses. Golfers are also

treated to breakfast and lunch, with play followed by a cocktail hour and awards dinner. Foursomes are $1,350, while sponsorships start as low as $100.
