Michael is the president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor Society, competes in Varsity Lacrosse, and is a dedicated volunteer at St. John the Baptist’s Writing Center where he serves as a tutor. In addition to his in-school activities, Michael volunteers at St. Charles hospital where he works in an administrative capacity. He also served as a research assistant at Stony Brook University during the summer of 2017. Aidan will attend Boston College next year, where he will pursue a major in Finance and Accounting at the Carroll School of Management. He plans on minoring in Spanish. Michael will attend Georgia Institute of Technology on a College of Science Dean’s Scholarship. He will major in Physics with a minor in Spanish and plans to pursue medical school in the future. Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. The Magic of Pippin Islip High School’s theater company performed magic, bringing the play “Pippin” to life for three superlative performances on April 12th, 13th and 14th. The production was the culmination of long hours of planning and practice by the young enrolled in Dr. Rich Harris’ theater production course, which was first offered several years ago to provide Islip’s high schoolers with an

opportunity to better understand the roles and responsibilities of a professional theatrical production. “Pippin,” written by Stephen Schwartz from a Roger O. Hirson book with additional contributions from original director Bob Fosse, first hit Broadway in 1972, earning a Tony Award and its place in the pantheon of beloved musicals. “The outstanding cast

with Jamie Lynn Ryan ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those ﬂip ﬂops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the ﬂoral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be ﬂourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

During her tenure, she supervised the mapping of curricula in all areas and implemented a quality leadership curriculum. Under her direction, she introduced Reading and Writing Workshop to K-8 students, PSAT to all high school students and interactive whiteboards for instruction, including 15 hours of professional development, for all teachers. At the high school level, Dr. Semel launched a cosmetology career program, provided computer-driven SAT prep and coordinated Academy programs. Dr. Semel, an Amityville resident, holds a Doctor of Education degree in literacy from Hofstra University and a Master of Science degree in administration from LIU Post. “I am delighted to be chosen as the next superintendent for the

Breakout Box Middle schoolers in the Islip School District’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted recently had a chance to work with a “breakout box,” an immersive learning games platform from Breakout EDU. The students had to use teamwork and critical thinking to solve a series of challenging puzzles in order to open a locked box. Afterwards, as part of EXCEL’s ongoing “Inventing Self” series, the students were treated to a virtual BREAKOUT BOX - After working with a “breakout box,” middle schoolers in Islip’s meeting with a surprise guest EXCEL program enjoyed a surprise “Inventing Self” virtual meeting with Breakout via Google Hangouts. Through a series of perceptive questions, the students deduced the identity of the guest, Breakout EDU founder and CEO James Sanders of San Francisco, California. Sanders began his education career as a middle school history teacher in South Los Angeles, where he worked with Google to pilot and launch Chromebooks for Education. As a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow, he he led the development of Future Ready Schools and the White

House Film Festival. His inspirational virtual talk with the Islip students addressed the idea of embracing setbacks, touching on how his experience with failure served him well in paving the path that led to his great success as an entrepreneur. “Having successful real world giants like Mr. Sanders speak so openly and honestly with students about the nonlinear pathway to success and happiness is what Inventing Self is all about,” said Julia Johnson, the EXCEL program’s coordinator.
